Max Finder Mystery Collected Casebook Volume 1 ReviewIn the town of Whispering Meadows there are no lack of cases for Max Finder and his cohort Alison Santos to work on. Finding the culprit can sometimes be very tricky, but between the two of them, their sharp thinking and powers of observation they are great at cracking cases. If you think you can figure out whodunit you are welcome to travel along as they crack ten very sweet and difficult cases at school and around town. Can you cut the mustard and solve them before either one of them claims to know the answer to the mystery? Here are a few cases in this book for the young detectives tried solve:
* The Case of the Basketball Card Foul: Ethan Webster, a snotty but decent basketball player, brought his "limited edition McGrady rookie card" to school and someone stole it. A girl called Mega-Con Comics & Cards to inquire about the value of the card and the weekend show. Hmmmm!
* The Case of the Midnight Scratcher: Leslie was having a bunch of her friends over for her birthday. She received an "Avril Elliot CD"for her birthday. During the night someone gouged Gabrielle's initials in it. She was also seen up during the night. Did she dislike Avril that much?
* The Case of the Stereo-Smashing Spook: Tony's dad donated a stereo as a prize for the school's Halloween dance and he won it when he wasn't supposed to even enter the contest. When no one was looking . . . "CRASH!" It was tossed down the stairs. Gee, did someone hate Tony enough to wreck the stereo?
* The Case of the Soapy Switch: Nanda Kanwar was selling chocolate for charity in hopes she would win a snowboard if she sold the most. Someone swiped her chocolate and left soap behind. She was really upset because she was sooooo close to winning. Would they catch the "soap switcher" before the contest was over?
The cases in this book are fun, but the reader really has to be observant to figure out whodunit in most of these cases. If you put on your thinking cap and closely observe the scenes of the crime you'll stand a good chance of solving them along with Max and Alison. There will probably be a few that will stump you and you'll have to flip to the back of the book to find the culprit. I enjoyed them all and will not admit how many times I had to peek in the back, if at all.
Max is a fact finder and before he presents a new mystery he'll tell you about an interesting fact like "the tongue of a blue whale weighs more than a full-grown elephant." The duo quickly develops a "suspect list" and work hard to solve their mysteries. Of course guys like Basher McGintley, the "Planet's biggest bully," always seem to be the type I'd suspect, but these little mysteries are so well done it really is hard to peg the culprit at times. In addition to the cases there are numerous puzzles and "extra stuff" to do. If you have a youngster who enjoys the graphic novel format and loves a good mystery, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at this collected casebook.Max Finder Mystery Collected Casebook Volume 1 Overview

Turkey Monster Thanksgiving ReviewThis was a purchase for grandchildren, based on a previous read. Our first exposure was more in the line of stumbling onto the book when we were browsing. It read quickly, was upbeat, but carried a message of accommodating to the social and family situations that so many kids are close to but are likely to misunderstand or to apply misconceptions. (here a single parent situation with a child wanting to take a leadership role)
We felt it was a good message for the developing families of our children, packaged in an easy to read format. Fun!Turkey Monster Thanksgiving Overview

The Ultimate Book of Kid Concoctions 2 ReviewEver wonder what to do with that huge pile of dryer lint, old coffee grounds, left over mashed potatoes or extra spaghetti noodles? This book could have the answers - and more.
If you liked the first Ultimate Book of Kid Concoctions, and you want more gooey things to do with your child, this book is for you! While we didn't enjoy this book as much as the first one, it was still a welcome addition to "I've got nothing to do" solutions.
With yet another 60 plus ideas to educate and entertain, indoors and out, this book is great for giving kids something to do that isn't TV or Nintendo. This book has more ideas for gift kids can make plus edible recipes than the other.
There's an edible frosting dough (kids can make sculptures to add to the top of a cake!), a delicious wreath for the holidays, a shake and make whipped cream, and a fruit roll-up recipe that's a little different.
There are several art projects - a lot of alternative painting ideas, there are a lot of Garden Concoctions - Apple Head People, Indian Corn Jewelry, Living Words, Bird Cookies, EggHead Garden, Greenhouse in a Bag - that are wonderful for kids who like the nature). We especially like the number of concoctions that can be made as gifts for friends and relatives - Magic Candle Art, Ice Lanterns, Kooky Clingers, Magic Photo Art, Peppermint Wreaths, Silly Stained Glass, Cool Crayon Tee Shirts. Don't let the 4 - 8 age recommendation on this book fool you - older kids will like this book - just leave it lying around the kitchen and older kids will probably find something they'd like to make!
Adult supervision is definitely needed. Many of the ingredients are common to most households, but some are not. Most projects take pre-planning. The only addition I'd make to this book would be a checklist of common ingredients, to add to my grocery shopping list! The Ultimate Book of Kid Concoctions 2 Overview

Rootabaga Stories, Part One ReviewIs it possible in a half dozen pages to produce a credible and moving story of the love of two skyscrapers and the sorrowful loss of their child, a train? Only for Carl Sandburg, I dare say. I'm not sure who requests this book more often, me or my 7-year-old daughter, but these bite-size, fabulous stories increase their charm with each rereading. My Little House Cookbook (Little House Reader's Collection) ReviewI purchased this book to find recipes to make for my daughters 8th birthday. She had read all the Little House Series and had a "Laura" party. I was very disappointed when the recipe for making butter called for a food proccesor. I was looking for recipes that would illustrate the frontier lifestyle not modern day cooking. The recipes called for ingredients they wouldn't have or use.My Little House Cookbook (Little House Reader's Collection) Overview

Rocks & Minerals (Eyewitness Books) ReviewMost of the rock-and-mineral books I see are full of colorful pictures of exotic minerals, underground caves or far-away mountains. This is the first book I've come across that actually takes you to those places. The simple, clever mirror device pops those rocks right into your lap, or brings the mountain up close.
The information is accurate and well-written. Full color spreads illustrate the location or object and the photography is breathtaking. This is one you'll want to find space for, on that "oversized" book shelf, to accomodate the height of the book.Rocks & Minerals (Eyewitness Books) Overview

Candy Corn: Poems ReviewI have all of James Stevenson's "corn poem" books. Thanks to Amazon, I was able to find even the out of print ones.
As a teacher, I love these books. The tiny poems pack a wallop about people, places and things. Stevenson's detailed drawings are stories in themselves, often conveying poignant thoughts about life's overlooked experiences. His small character sketches are the perfect way to get students thinking about how to create their own characters from seemingly insignificant details.
Even students who don't think they like poetry will love these books. They make poetry understandable and show budding creative writers that ordinary circumstances can have meaning and depth. Thank you James Stevenson!!Candy Corn: Poems Overview

Crafting Fun: 101 Things to Make and Do with Kids ReviewWhile thumbing through this book for the first time, I breathed a great sigh of relief. Crafting Fun makes me feel warm, happy, and craft-competent, while many of my other craft books make me feel unprepared, incompetent, and often frustrated. Now that I have found this book, I have put away all of my craft books from the Waldorf tradition (The Children's Year: Seasonal Crafts and Clothes (Festivals (Hawthorn Press)), All Year Round (Lifeways), Crafts through the Year, etc.) Never again will I struggle to make a teeny tiny delicate tissue paper angel while my child looks on, uninvolved. Never again will I search for obscure items such as kite paper and split straws.
Crafting Fun is filled with simple, lovely, do-able craft projects, many of which I remember from my own childhood. Your children will be able to do the projects themselves, rather than stand back and watch you do them. Just this December, my 5-1/2-year-old and I have made popcorn and cranberry garlands, tinsel stars with pipe cleaners, construction paper garlands, a lovely ice picture with leaves and berries in a pie pan, and pinecone treats for birds. We didn't have to buy a thing, other than the cranberries; everything else we had on hand. There are many, many more winter projects to choose from, and we are looking forward to all of the wonderful ideas from other seasons, as well.
Some of the projects in this book may have you thinking, "I don't need a book for that!" And yet that is the beauty of this book: All of the great ideas you remember are here, in one nicely spiral-bound book, along with project ideas you may not quite remember, as well as many others. The projects are presented simply enough that you will be able to turn the book over to your children to read to themselves in a few years. I know my children will grow up having fond memories of warm moments shared doing projects from this book. I've given this book as a gift, to the great delight of the recipients. Highly recommended.Crafting Fun: 101 Things to Make and Do with Kids Overview

All About My Body ReviewI bought this after seeing it in the publishers magazine. I was very impressed with the story books, the take home books, the hand's on center ideas. This just covers it all. The price here at amazon was much less than the publisher too!
To keep this series in great shape I placed each section in sheet protectors, laminated the stories and story board shapes and placed it in a three ring binder. Now when I am teaching the unit I have everything I need in one easy, organized place. I just can not say enough good about this item or the series! I was NEVER a theme teacher until now! Pictures of Hollis Woods ReviewPictures of Hollis Woods is the very moving story of an abandoned girl who has difficulty fitting into foster homes and is constantly getting in trouble for running away. What we get in this novel are two narratives: one in the present as Hollis tries to fit in with Josie, an older woman slowing succumbing to dementia; and one in the form of flashbacks told through description of pictures Hollis has drawn which tells the story of the previous summer when Hollis thought she had finally found a home. Slowly, these two stories are drawn together as Hollis tries to protect herself and Josie as well as come to terms with the events of the previous summer.
All in all, Ms. Giff has written a wonderful novel. The switching between the two plots in handled well and Hollis is a beautifully drawn character. She is difficult and introverted, but she is an artist and is ultimately able to overcome her defensiveness and become part of a family--even an extended family. I would highly recommend this novel to young and old alike.Pictures of Hollis Woods Overview

Ghost Eye ReviewPurrloom Popcorn, the odd-eyed Cornish Rex, was perfectly happy to spend his days primping and preening before the cat-show judges and winning blue ribbons. After all, everyone just loves a winner! But one day, Popcorn is suddenly taken far from the show life he knows and consiters home, to a big old house in a strange city. The family there doesn't recognize Popcorn's value. Nor does the lonely, sad little girl who tries so desperately to befriend him. But as Popcorn attempts to return to the cat shows, he makes an amazing discovery - through his blue eye, he can see ghosts, and there are many! Through them, memories and old longings begin to surface. And soon, Popcorn must answer some difficult questions about seeing and being seen. An interesting novella, with a developed main character and wonderful illustrations (I happen to know the illustrater personally - she's a wonderful artist!). And ghosts are always cool :-)Ghost Eye Overview

From the Earth to the Moon (Bantam Classics) ReviewThis translation, one of the Barnes and Noble "Classics Editions", is the 1874 English translation by Edward Roth, a Philadelphia school-teacher. In no sense a translation, it is more a parody or retelling of the French original with many embelishments and additions by the author. The editor is Aaron Parett, an English professor from Montana. In an appendix the editor mentions that for furthur reading one might try the complete translation by Walter James Miller, "The Annotated Jules Verne: From the Earth to the Moon" published by Crowell: 1978 and reprinted by Gramercy: 1995. Crispin: The Cross of Lead (2003 John Newbery Medal Winner) ReviewCRISPIN: THE CROSS OF LEAD is a thrilling and endearing tale, unquestionably my favorite book of Avi's from the bunch I've read. (This is, in fact, his fiftieth book.) CRISPIN is set in 1300s England. Not only is the story steeped in the history of feudalistic medieval Britain, but Avi brings that history to life most vividly without ever once hitting you over the head with it.
"Time was the great millstone, which ground us to dust like kerneled wheat. The Holy Church told us where we were in the alterations of the day, the year, and in our daily toil. Birth and death alone gave distinction to our lives, as we made the journey between the darkness from whence we had come to the darkness where we were fated to await Judgment Day."
CRISPIN is the name of the 13-year-old peasant main character; although, the only name he's known for himself is "Asta's Son." That is until his mother dies, and in his blinding grief he stumbles upon a secret meeting in the woods between John Aycliffe--the steward of the manor--and a wealthy stranger. In a flash he finds himself the target of a plot in which he is falsely accused of a theft and declared a "wolf's head," allowing anyone to kill him on sight. On his way "out of town" the village priest tells the boy his real name, tells him to hide out for 24 hours until he can round up some provisions, and promises to reveal some more vital information the next day. Then the priest proceeds to get his throat slit and Crispin is on the run with the theft AND the priest's murder hanging over him. What happens to him is one of those stories that is so well crafted that you can taste and smell the settings, as well as hear the sinister growl in Aycliffe's throat, as you anxiously wait for something to go right for Crispin.
While trying not to reveal any more of the story, I'll also tell you that there is a character in here who I find darn near as lovable as Hagrid.
I hope that Avi is contemplating a sequel to this one--the end came way too soon for me.

The Eternity Code (Artemis Fowl, Book 3) ReviewHE'S BAAACK! Yes, Artemis Fowl is back in action in the third addition to the hit series. The book is packed full with action and lives up to the promises of the other books.
Artemis Fowl is coming to grips with the return of his kidnapped father and Fowl Sr.'s newly formed conscience. His parents are insisting on turning around the illegal enterprises of the Fowl Family, but Artemis isn't so sure. Still, in an effort to please his parents, he decides that he will commit just one last crime. Just a tiny one.
But, Artemis didn't count on the operation blowing up in his face. When he meets with American master criminal Jon Spiro, he didn't realize he was being set up. All Artemis wanted to do was intimidate him a little bit with his new "C Cube", a hybrid of fairy and human technology decades ahead of its time; it will render all other technologies--like the ones Spiro creates--obsolete. So when Spiro steals the Cube and mortally wounds Butler in an attempt to murder Artemis, the young master criminal is forced to seek the aid of his long-time adversaries.
The Fairies are less than pleased when Artemis reveals his loss of the fairy technology, that, in the wrong hands, would be capable of revealing the entire Fairy civilization. Determined to steal back the C Cube, Artemis enlists the aid of Captain Holly Short and the Fairy criminal Mulch Diggums in a risky operation that takes place in Chicago.
Great fun! Colfer exercises his great prowess as a writer as he seamlessly winds the third story of Artemis Fowl. The funny, witty characters manage to be charming and tough. The only qualm I had was that Holly and Artemis had less interaction that they did in #2, which would have added even more humor to the novel. We also get to know Juliet Butler better, which is a good addition to the story.
Okay, do you really have to read this review to know you NEED TO READ this book? I didn't think so. If you haven't, read the others first. And when you have finished all three, you'll be hoping that Colfer will produce a fourth (its rumored that it will be quartet.)
So Happy Reading! You'll have lots of fun with this one...The Eternity Code (Artemis Fowl, Book 3) Overview

Let's Do Lunch: Eating all the Calories and Carbs you want to lose weight ReviewAs someone who has lost over 180 pounds naturally through diet and exercise, I have grown to love and admire anyone else who has been able to do the same for themselves.
That's why I was so anxious to read Roger Troy Wilson's story about losing an unbelievable 230 pounds in his new book called Let's Do Lunch. As a low-carb weight loss success story myself, I just HAD to know how he lost his weight and kept it off for many years now.
Well, what I discovered was the most peculiar and unique "diet" plan I think I have ever seen in my life. It's definitely NOT low-carb, low-fat, low-calorie, or portion-controlled. None of those ever worked for him no matter how hard he tried to lose weight on them. I don't know where Wilson came up with this way of eating, but it helped him shed the pounds and keep it off. Anything that can help you do that is worth taking a look at.
In Let's Do Lunch, Wilson not only shares his story about ballooning up to a "5-foot waist" (my waist got as big as 5'2"!), but also the many letters of thanks he has received from those who have enjoyed his special program. The enthusiasm these people have after losing weight is contagious and makes you want to know how the Let's Do Lunch plan works.
As a very successful businessman, Wilson knew he had a problem with obesity but ignored it for many years. As many of us former 400+ pounders will attest, the rollercoaster ride of lose, gain, lose, gain was ruthless. Trying time after time to find that one way of eating that will sustain us for the rest of our lives was challenging and draining. Surely there had to be a better way to control your weight?!
For Wilson, there was. And actually he can thank his son for getting him started on the greatest achievement of his life. When they say the old phrase "out of the mouth of babes," it was definitely true for Wilson.
His son had put some grapes in the freezer to have as a refreshing and delicious treat later in the day. But when Wilson found the grapes in the freezer, he immediately thought they were ruined and started blaming everyone for it. He went to his wife first, but she said she didn't do it. So then he calls his son and I'm sure he responded something along the lines of, "Chill out, Dad, it's cool. You've never tasted grapes this good before!"
And so Wilson tried one of these frozen fruits and was just amazed by how incredibly delicious they were. So he kept eating and eating them. He did the same thing the next night and the next night beginning a pattern that eventually led to the basis for the Let's Do Lunch program that helped him shed those pounds.
While Wilson makes it clear this is not a fruit diet, fruits of all kinds are highly encouraged to eat in the quantities of your choice. Besides the fruit, most of the rest of the Let's Do Lunch plan is fairly close to livin' la vida low-carb -- eliminate sugar, starches, and unnecessary carbs and consume more protein for satiety. As for the high sugar content in all of that fruit he endorses, Wilson said he doesn't think that sugar is fattening although the sugar found in candy bars and sweets is fattening. Hmmmm.
I chuckled when I read about how the "thin" version of Wilson is getting so much attention these days because I can personally relate to that experience. You life really does change after losing such a dramatic amount of weight. But I am envious of Roger Troy Wilson. He got his tummy tuck after losing weight and is so happy with it. This is a struggle for so many of us who have lost weight, but now have the hanging skin to look at every single day. Someday it will happen, someday. Wilson said it has made all the difference in the world how he sees himself when he looks in the mirror.
In a nutshell, the Let's Do Lunch weight loss plan calls for four things: eat fruit, make lunch your priority meal of the day, eat less fattening foods that you enjoy, and have corn, beans, and peas instead of bread, pasta, potatoes or rice. That's it. Do those things and you are well on your way to losing weight the way Wilson did it.
Of course, you will want to read Let's Do Lunch to get a better understanding of the who, what, where, why, when, how of this new way of eating. His "Helpful Tips" chapter answers all of those nagging questions you may be having about dieting in general and how Let's Do Lunch works to melt away the fat from your body. You'll have to turn to page 55 to see how often you should weigh yourself. It's not what you think.
Wilson also helps you deal with the inevitable cravings you will experience, what to do when you feel the desire to cheat, how to order when you eat out at a fast-food or sit-down restaurant.
But I know you are wondering about that little word known as exercise. Am I gonna have to sweat myself to death on this diet? In a word, nope! Wilson said exercise is not required on his program, but it will most certainly enhance the weight loss and health benefits you will enjoy if you do. Your body will also become more toned, energetic, and active. When you shed over 100 pounds off of your body, you cannot help but start moving faster and faster in every activity that you do. I am more active today than I have ever been in my entire life. And I'm sure Wilson is as well.
There is a structured 14-day eating plan for people who need to be told how to eat. Follow it strictly if you need guidance about doing the Let's Do Lunch plan. Wilson even provides a handy grocery shopping list about what you can and cannot buy to eat on his program. And in case you were wondering, what would a book about weight loss be without throwing in a few favorite recipes at the back of the book?
Wilson has made the Let's Do Lunch so user-friendly that you won't have any trouble reading it from cover to cover in one sitting. What an amazing story of weight loss triumph and success Wilson has to share. While my path to becoming skinny was very different from his, I have great respect and admiration for anyone who can get their obesity under control for good.
