Candy Corn: Poems ReviewI have all of James Stevenson's "corn poem" books. Thanks to Amazon, I was able to find even the out of print ones.
As a teacher, I love these books. The tiny poems pack a wallop about people, places and things. Stevenson's detailed drawings are stories in themselves, often conveying poignant thoughts about life's overlooked experiences. His small character sketches are the perfect way to get students thinking about how to create their own characters from seemingly insignificant details.
Even students who don't think they like poetry will love these books. They make poetry understandable and show budding creative writers that ordinary circumstances can have meaning and depth. Thank you James Stevenson!!Candy Corn: Poems Overview

Cooking Outside the Pizza Box: Easy Recipes for Today's College Student ReviewI originally bought this book for myself, and found it to be too introductory for me, so I gave it to my brother, who despite being older than me still calls me to ask things like how you mash a potato. The recipes are very easy to read, making no assumptions about previous knowledge, and they utilize store-bought pre-prepared ingredients (the author is especially fond of frozen potsticker dumplings) in a way that is helpful to college students, although I thought occasionally the scratch alternative would have been no more difficult and probably cheaper and better tasting.
What I love best about the book is the way it is organized. Recipes that require no cooking or are microwave-only are marked with big icons on the page, and while the recipes are organized by meal or food type, like most books, the book also contains multiple tables of contents that group the recipes differently--vegetarian, microwavable, appropriate for a date, seasonally, etc.--and even has one set of listings that put together recipes for a complete meal. While not particularly elaborate (as most of the recipes are pretty simple anyway) I love this feature, because matching flavors can be particularly difficult for a new cook, and for any cook a recipe book can be unhelpful in planning a meal if you don't kind of already know what you want.
The first section of the book is also really good for first-timers because it goes over the basics of setting up, cleaning, and sharing a kitchen. It provides lists of basic equipment and the basic ingredients you should always have on hand, and this list is in general pretty sensitive to the limitations of dorm sizes and mini-fridges. It even gives cleaning instructions for some of the less obvious cleaning challenges in the kitchen. I thought the list of things to discuss and agree on with roommates regarding kitchen use was particularly helpful. Lastly, the book itself is well-designed, being spiral-bound rather than a traditional paperback, so that it lays flat easily while staying open to the same page hands-free. This seems like a silly note, but I have a lot of cookbooks, some with a similar target market as this one, and I've had to waste a lot of time copying recipes down onto other paper or recipe cards just because I needed both hands and the book kept closing itself or flipping to another page.
In summary, a great book for someone who doesn't know anything about cooking. Would make a great high school graduation gift perhaps made more interesting by pairing it with some of the basic kitchen tool necessities listed in the first few chapters of the book.Cooking Outside the Pizza Box: Easy Recipes for Today's College Student Overview

Let's Do Lunch: Eating all the Calories and Carbs you want to lose weight ReviewAs someone who has lost over 180 pounds naturally through diet and exercise, I have grown to love and admire anyone else who has been able to do the same for themselves.
That's why I was so anxious to read Roger Troy Wilson's story about losing an unbelievable 230 pounds in his new book called Let's Do Lunch. As a low-carb weight loss success story myself, I just HAD to know how he lost his weight and kept it off for many years now.
Well, what I discovered was the most peculiar and unique "diet" plan I think I have ever seen in my life. It's definitely NOT low-carb, low-fat, low-calorie, or portion-controlled. None of those ever worked for him no matter how hard he tried to lose weight on them. I don't know where Wilson came up with this way of eating, but it helped him shed the pounds and keep it off. Anything that can help you do that is worth taking a look at.
In Let's Do Lunch, Wilson not only shares his story about ballooning up to a "5-foot waist" (my waist got as big as 5'2"!), but also the many letters of thanks he has received from those who have enjoyed his special program. The enthusiasm these people have after losing weight is contagious and makes you want to know how the Let's Do Lunch plan works.
As a very successful businessman, Wilson knew he had a problem with obesity but ignored it for many years. As many of us former 400+ pounders will attest, the rollercoaster ride of lose, gain, lose, gain was ruthless. Trying time after time to find that one way of eating that will sustain us for the rest of our lives was challenging and draining. Surely there had to be a better way to control your weight?!
For Wilson, there was. And actually he can thank his son for getting him started on the greatest achievement of his life. When they say the old phrase "out of the mouth of babes," it was definitely true for Wilson.
His son had put some grapes in the freezer to have as a refreshing and delicious treat later in the day. But when Wilson found the grapes in the freezer, he immediately thought they were ruined and started blaming everyone for it. He went to his wife first, but she said she didn't do it. So then he calls his son and I'm sure he responded something along the lines of, "Chill out, Dad, it's cool. You've never tasted grapes this good before!"
And so Wilson tried one of these frozen fruits and was just amazed by how incredibly delicious they were. So he kept eating and eating them. He did the same thing the next night and the next night beginning a pattern that eventually led to the basis for the Let's Do Lunch program that helped him shed those pounds.
While Wilson makes it clear this is not a fruit diet, fruits of all kinds are highly encouraged to eat in the quantities of your choice. Besides the fruit, most of the rest of the Let's Do Lunch plan is fairly close to livin' la vida low-carb -- eliminate sugar, starches, and unnecessary carbs and consume more protein for satiety. As for the high sugar content in all of that fruit he endorses, Wilson said he doesn't think that sugar is fattening although the sugar found in candy bars and sweets is fattening. Hmmmm.
I chuckled when I read about how the "thin" version of Wilson is getting so much attention these days because I can personally relate to that experience. You life really does change after losing such a dramatic amount of weight. But I am envious of Roger Troy Wilson. He got his tummy tuck after losing weight and is so happy with it. This is a struggle for so many of us who have lost weight, but now have the hanging skin to look at every single day. Someday it will happen, someday. Wilson said it has made all the difference in the world how he sees himself when he looks in the mirror.
In a nutshell, the Let's Do Lunch weight loss plan calls for four things: eat fruit, make lunch your priority meal of the day, eat less fattening foods that you enjoy, and have corn, beans, and peas instead of bread, pasta, potatoes or rice. That's it. Do those things and you are well on your way to losing weight the way Wilson did it.
Of course, you will want to read Let's Do Lunch to get a better understanding of the who, what, where, why, when, how of this new way of eating. His "Helpful Tips" chapter answers all of those nagging questions you may be having about dieting in general and how Let's Do Lunch works to melt away the fat from your body. You'll have to turn to page 55 to see how often you should weigh yourself. It's not what you think.
Wilson also helps you deal with the inevitable cravings you will experience, what to do when you feel the desire to cheat, how to order when you eat out at a fast-food or sit-down restaurant.
But I know you are wondering about that little word known as exercise. Am I gonna have to sweat myself to death on this diet? In a word, nope! Wilson said exercise is not required on his program, but it will most certainly enhance the weight loss and health benefits you will enjoy if you do. Your body will also become more toned, energetic, and active. When you shed over 100 pounds off of your body, you cannot help but start moving faster and faster in every activity that you do. I am more active today than I have ever been in my entire life. And I'm sure Wilson is as well.
There is a structured 14-day eating plan for people who need to be told how to eat. Follow it strictly if you need guidance about doing the Let's Do Lunch plan. Wilson even provides a handy grocery shopping list about what you can and cannot buy to eat on his program. And in case you were wondering, what would a book about weight loss be without throwing in a few favorite recipes at the back of the book?
Wilson has made the Let's Do Lunch so user-friendly that you won't have any trouble reading it from cover to cover in one sitting. What an amazing story of weight loss triumph and success Wilson has to share. While my path to becoming skinny was very different from his, I have great respect and admiration for anyone who can get their obesity under control for good.
Won't you be the next Roger Troy Wilson to change your life forever? If so, then Let's Do Lunch.Let's Do Lunch: Eating all the Calories and Carbs you want to lose weight Overview

The Sopranos: The Book ReviewI got an early copy through Barnes & Noble, and let me tell you: this book is awesome. It is filled with extremely high quality photographs ranging from portraits of the cast members to pictures from the episodes to VERY nice pictures of the interiors of buildings (the Soprano house, the Bada Bing, Nuovo Vesuvio, etc.). It is also filled with a wealth of knowledge, talking about numerous aspects about the show from the look of Jersey (compared to "New Jersey") to the music used on the show to a breakdown of where the Soprano Family gets its income to even the types of nail designs that Carmela and Adriana had over the years. The major cast members all wrote their own essays about their characters, which contain descriptions interspersed with their own insights on their characters. There is also a section devoted to each character highlighting that character's most distinctive trait (such as Paulie's hair, Artie's mustache, etc.) and giving insider secrets about it (ex: Tony Sirico wakes up at 3am every shoot day, uses an entire can of hairspray, and emerges 3 hours later with Paulie's distinctive hairdo). Finally, the book includes an episode guide up through Season 6A to help refresh your memory of the gist of what happened in each episode. All told, this is an incredible book, and as I said, it is extremely high quality, which you can tell right from the front cover. I highly recommend it to anybody who has watched even one episode and enjoyed what they saw.The Sopranos: The Book Overview

The Confetti Cakes Cookbook: Spectacular Cookies, Cakes, and Cupcakes from New York City's Famed Bakery ReviewWhat a lovely book of cake decorating education!! Well done Elisa!! Ms. Strauss is the owner of New York City's "Confetti Cakes". Though she worked in the fashion industry, a playful idea of mixing her love for baking with her eye for fashion brought her to this career, and it seems to suit her well. From her bakery comes this addicting book!!
Having been mesmorized by the feats and skills of such accompished cake decorators, I always look forward with great anticipation, to the latest tomes written on this subject. Ms. Strauss does not disappoint. She has compiled a rather delightful writing of the mastery of cake design and teaches a wide range of baking skills. The cake decorating devotee is given all the information necessary to reproduce what you seen on each wonderful page. This book has the ability for anyone, from novice to professional, to use and create and ooooh and aaaaah!
The instructions run from basic cookies in shapes from onesies outfits (that's the baby's first year everyday garment of basically longjohns) to purses, and cupcakes with beribboned polka-dots to beach sandals to the main event of spectacular cakes that would fool anyone due to their unique appearances, like popcorn bags to a sushi table, replete with "rice" and "California rolls".
The book is sturdy and thick with beautiful and detailed photography of each creation so that any questions can be answered with just a glance of the eye. Her explanations are clear and concise and they are given to you in steps both for the actions required as well as the timetable needed in order to plan your time wisely.
Her book is written in this order:

Gifts of Good Taste:The Creative Kitchen (Leisure Arts #5408) ReviewThis is a nice little book that has some good ideas for gifts to give and how to wrap or present them. Included are; beverages, breads, candies, cookies, holiday and seasonal, pies and cakes, sauces, mixes and jams, snacks.
There are instructions for the patterns, embroidery and making a coiled rag coaster and a ribbon rose (which is not the best I have seen done). Patterns are the same size as you will use, so there is no reason to worry about enlarging, but there are instructions for changing the size too. Pictures are given with the instructions.
Cooking tips are included and an index.
The recipes are not that hard to make, but not all that run of the mill either, neither are the wrappings and ideas on how to give them. We have really liked (as well as the people who received them) the turtle brownies, the butterscotch coffee cake and the 2 types of sweet and savory nuts.
Altogether a good little idea book for beginners and those who are more `crafty'.Gifts of Good Taste:The Creative Kitchen (Leisure Arts #5408) Overview

The Gift Basket Design Book, 2nd: Everything You Need to Know to Create Beautiful, Professional-Looking Gift Baskets for All Occasions (Gift Basket Design Book: Everything You Need to Know to Create) ReviewI have read many how-to books especially business-related ones; however, seldom have I found a more clearly written book than "The Gift Basket Design Book". Ms. Shirley George Frazier's instructions are thorough, easy to understand and follow. Her explanations don't leave you guessing as to why she chose one method over another which will help one avoid costly mistakes. Her "tips" are an added feature that distinguishes her book from so many others. Finally, Ms. Frazier's resource lists and recommendations are on target for getting good prices for supplies, tools and basket ingredients. This book makes me believe that Ms. Frazier wants me to succeed in my new gift basket business and shared all her secrets to ensure I do so.
That said, I do have a criticism. While Ms. Frazier's instructions for arranging baskets are superb, I find that several of her finished products look a bit unprofessional. I believe the problem is two-fold. First, in some cases she has not selected ingredients with packaging that compliment each other, color-wise. Therefore, certain arrangements look bland versus cheerful. Second, in general, the pick embellishments (and some ribbons) do not look to be of good quality; do not share a common bond with each other or the gifts; and/or are skimpily placed. Usually, less is more but I believe the interior of her baskets would look more professional with an abundance of metallic shred, curled ribbon, ting ting and/or star sprays.
These comments are not intended to minimize the benefits of this book. The step-by-step photographed instructions are worth its price, alone. And if you have an eye for color and balance you can overcome the ingredient and embellishment issues. Plus, generously she has provided photos of baskets prepared by others that when studied will give insight into how to better embellish your baskets.

He is a highly respected member of the candy industry and the owner of the Hansel & Gretel Candy Kitchen in Helen, Georgia, a popular tourist destination.
His recipes are precise and well written with much more information than you'll find in most candy books. Once you see them, you'll want to drop everything and get started making candy, David's way.

Recipes Every Man Should Know (Pocket Companions) ReviewI just received my book the other day and was so excited to see how perfect it was for my husband. He recently showed a hint of interest in the kitchen and I was not about to let the opportunity slide. This book is exactly what he needed - it is pocket sized, black, and not frilly at all. The recipes are not intimidating and are all the kinds of things that my husband loves to eat. He actually made us the pan-fried steak and bacon mashed potatoes from it last night (even doing his own grocery shopping for it) and was so proud of himself (and it was really good)!! Love it! And what guy could resist bacon with brownies... or beer in chili? Oh, and make sure not to miss the Introduction page...hysterical.Recipes Every Man Should Know (Pocket Companions) Overview

Popcorn Palaces : The Art Deco Movie Theater Paintings of Davis Cone ReviewMost people who appreciate the architecture of movie theatres are focused on the fantasy or opulence that the auditorium provides, but here a skilled artist helps us appreciate the facades of some 80 Art Deco styled cinemas across America by means of extraordinarily detailed images in paint. It is always a pleasure to welcome an artistic achievement to the body of work in this subject, and this handsome volume produced in the long format (11 inches long by 9 inches high by one half inch thick) and printed in wonderful color on satin-coated paper stock, with color photos on both film-laminated hard covers, will be a welcome addition to most libraries. Even the end papers and chapter heads are dyed a happy yellow to set the tone of the book. Unlike "Silent Screens" which is in the same format, "Popcorn Palaces ..." is nostalgic without being depressing, even though the writers make clear that many of the subjects have passed away and continue to do so. In that sense, this too is a `necrology' of sorts. It is completed with a detailed Index and Bibliographies of the artist and his art, as well as theatres.
Within the 144 pages the authors, Messrs. Kinerk and Wilhelm, succeed in giving a good history of the rise of these theatres and also a story of how the talented artist Davis Cone found his subjects and brought them to life. Unlike "Silent Screens" and other efforts, this publisher selected experts in theatre history and architecture (one of them a member of the Theatre Historical Society of America) to create an authoritative and factual text to frame the pages of artwork.
To be sure, the book is really about the artist, Mr. Cone, and his `photo-realistic' style and achievements; so the book is not primarily about the theatres, yet it does usually list the name, date of construction, address, architect and the date of the painting of most of the theatres. This thoroughness does give the book an historic value, even though most of the theatres are not individually profiled apart from those facts. It is not a `theatres book,' but a book about paintings, which happen to be of theatres and the remarkable artistry and foresight of one man: Mr. Cone. As the authors bring out, however, the subject was not a whim, but an integral part of the artist's life and sympathies.
Within five chapters the authors cover the artist, the era, the style, the technique, and the "Epilogue - Curtain Call," for the era which created these charming examples of Americana has passed. If we confine ourselves to only examples of the Art Deco style, one could find no better mirror to the past of such cinemas. Perhaps in future Mr. Cone will stretch to also record those non-Art Deco theatres in larger cities. The only criticism an architectural historian might make is that there is no exposition of the interiors of these mostly smaller, neighborhood show houses, but then it must be admitted that few of them had really notable interiors, and getting permission to photograph interiors can be very difficult as the photographers of "The Last Remaining Seats" have disclosed in an article about that book. These paintings are not of the `palaces' of the big cities, but these fantastically detailed paintings do capture the significance of the facades and their marquees to the smaller urban landscapes.
For those who want more history plus the artistry of architectural interiors, there are other books (all here at Amazon) such as: "The Best Remaining Seats ..."; "American Picture Palaces"; "Great American Movie Theatres"; and "American Theatres of Today" among others. Each of these captures in photos the wonderful era of such fanciful designs, but none of them feature the "Hyperrealistic" stylings of masters such as Mr. Cone. May his paintings inspire the saving and restoration of many of these examples of our theatres heritage, for then I believe that the artist will be truly rewarded for his work.Popcorn Palaces : The Art Deco Movie Theater Paintings of Davis Cone Overview

The Huckabuck Family: and How They Raised Popcorn in Nebraska and Quit and Came Back ReviewThis book is a satisfying follow-up to David Small's last twobooks, The Gardener & The Library. Though this is an old story its optimistic message suits Small's whimsical style beautifully. I'm thoroughly confused by the review in Kirkus that criticizes the repetitive nature of the names--this is part of Sandburg's poetic form--as well as the "pointless" nature of the Huckabuck family's travels, which is actually the whole point of the story. One must take a change in luck in stride, go out and find one's new fortune, and you may even find yourself back home having learned a thing or two. Cheers (& 5 stars) to the Huckabucks, Sandburg, and David Small. The Huckabuck Family: and How They Raised Popcorn in Nebraska and Quit and Came Back Overview

Popcorn at the Palace ReviewThis story is about an american farm girl who has a dream and a doll. Her doll is named after the queen of England who at the time was Victoria. Her dream was to meet the queen. One day the other farmers asked the girl why her corn looked so diffferent. She said its not corn, its popcorn. Then she gets an idea, her and her father would go to England because they have never heard of popcorn, but will she finally meet the queen?
I liked the book because it told a fictional story about a snack that almost every one loves, popcorn. The illustrations were good and the story was written very well. I think almost everyone will enjoy and understand this book. I also liked this book because it wasn't an ordinary picture book. This book had a story, it went very deep in character and it really got my attention. So if you like a good story, I suggest you read this book.Popcorn at the Palace Overview

Popped Culture: A Social History of Popcorn in America Review"Popcorn is America's gift to the world, and what a wonderful, fun-filled bequest it is."
Such is the very last line in the narrative section of POPPED CULTURE: A SOCIAL HISTORY OF POPCORN IN AMERICA. This very informative volume by Andrew Smith describes every aspect of this snack food, from its evolution on the cob in pre-historical Central and South America to 20th century "gourmet popcorn" in microwave bags.
While the book's title states this is a "social history", it seemed to me more a chronicle of the popcorn industry, especially in the United States, where popcorn was "invented", i.e. reached the citizenry's mass consciousness, in the first half of the 19th century. Smith has extensively researched every element of the saga: growers, processors, vendors, entrepreneurs, popping devices, packaging, flavoring, advertising, and target markets (both children and adults, at home and at the "movies").
Because so much of this book is a detailed narrative of the biz, it's not particularly fun, but rather like popcorn without butter and salt. There are too many passages like the following:
"... Wyandot (Popcorn Company) was sold to Vogel Popcorn, a division of Golden Valley. Golden Valley is now owned by ConAgra. ConAgra had previously purchased Orville Redenbacher's Gourmet Popping Corn during the mid 1970s. Jiffy Pop was sold in 1962 to American Home Products. In 1996 American Home Products was acquired by Hick, Muse, Tate and Furst, an investment firm, and it food industry management affiliate, C. Dean Metropoulos. Today Jiffy Pop and Franklin Crunch `N' Munch are part of International Home Foods, Inc., of Parsippany , New Jersey."
Why would any but the most obsessive of popcorn lovers, or business students, care?
POPPED CULTURE includes a small section of illustrations, and extensive sections dedicated to Notes and Bibliography/Resources. It also incorporates a 48-page chapter on historical recipes. Anyone for macaroni and popcorn, prune and popcorn pudding, popcorn omelet, popcorn macaroons, popcorn stuffed dates, popcorn soup, popcorn scrapple, popcorn and parsnips, popcorn and bacon, popcorn hash, popcorn with ice cream, or popcorn trifle? Uh, no. I think I'll just have the large tub ... with extra butter.Popped Culture: A Social History of Popcorn in America Overview

Popcorn For Breakfast ReviewPopcorn for Breakfast presents, as you might expect, as a romp, a comedy of manners featuring a certain kind of girl for our times. And there are certain elements in this novel you may have come to expect-- designer heels, luxury condos, and a canny protagonist wending her way through a fair amount of sex. But what makes this book different is a wry twist that deftly turns the genre on its head.
What I liked best about this book was the fine line the author walked with presenting Laurie. At first she is portrayed as an almost over-the-top, one hundred per cent brat-- on top of her game and entirely accustomed to getting her way.
But as the story develops the character comes to life and you may feel entirely differently about her.

Popcorn: Poems ReviewMy daughter found this in our library when she was 2 1/2, and we had to buy our own copy. It remains one of our favorite books three years later. The poems are witty and fun; easy for children to understand, and entertaining for adults, too. The watercolor illustrations are wonderful. This is our favorite of Stevenson's poetry books.Popcorn: Poems Overview

Popcorn ReviewPopcorn is one of my favorite snacks and I thought I was being adventurous by occasionally sprinking chili powder on mine. Then I read this book that is devoted entirely to adding all kinds of flavors and gourmet touches to this otherwise simple food. Popcorn nirvana does exist!
This cookbook has what one might expect with some recipes for spice blends to sprinkle over popcorn, but it goes beyond that to creating dishes with popped corn as an ingredient such as S'More Popcorn Bars, Hawaiian Luau Bars, Death by Chocolate Popcorn Balls, and even main course dishes such as Mac and Cheese Gratin. Some recipes are sweet, others are savory, and some have an ethnic flavor (Mexican, Asian, Indian, etc.).
I started out with a simple recipe that I enjoyed called Parm and Pepper Popcorn, which included a blend of parmesan cheese, freshly ground black pepper, red pepper flakes, and paprika, among other ingredients. I look forward to also trying the S'More Bars, Nacho Nacho Man Popcorn, Mocha Chocolata Latte Corn, and the Popcorn-Nut Munch Mix. I have to get used to the idea of using popcorn in main dishes, but I'll probably be Bohemian and try the Mac and Cheese Gratin.
The book includes a history of popcorn, types of popcorn and how they differ, methods of cooking it, and several color photographs of some of the recipes.
This is a fun and unique cookbook and will give me something too look forward to the next time my family asks for popcorn. They're in for a surprise!
I received a copy of this book for review from the publisher but the opinion of it is mine and was not solicited, nor was a positive review required. If I didn't like the book I would say so.

Popcorn (Charlesbridge) ReviewPopcorn is one of America's favorite foods and collectively, we eat as much as 1,124,000 pounds of popcorn every year. Popcorn! by Elaine Landau examines the history, lore, science, and cultural significance of this popular treat which can be traced back to about 5,600 years ago accordingly to an archaeological excavation in New Mexico. Very nicely illustrated by Brian Lies, Popcorn! will prove to be as informative as it is fun for young readers ages 6 to 10.Popcorn (Charlesbridge) Overview
