Crafting Fun: 101 Things to Make and Do with Kids ReviewWhile thumbing through this book for the first time, I breathed a great sigh of relief. Crafting Fun makes me feel warm, happy, and craft-competent, while many of my other craft books make me feel unprepared, incompetent, and often frustrated. Now that I have found this book, I have put away all of my craft books from the Waldorf tradition (The Children's Year: Seasonal Crafts and Clothes (Festivals (Hawthorn Press)), All Year Round (Lifeways), Crafts through the Year, etc.) Never again will I struggle to make a teeny tiny delicate tissue paper angel while my child looks on, uninvolved. Never again will I search for obscure items such as kite paper and split straws.
Crafting Fun is filled with simple, lovely, do-able craft projects, many of which I remember from my own childhood. Your children will be able to do the projects themselves, rather than stand back and watch you do them. Just this December, my 5-1/2-year-old and I have made popcorn and cranberry garlands, tinsel stars with pipe cleaners, construction paper garlands, a lovely ice picture with leaves and berries in a pie pan, and pinecone treats for birds. We didn't have to buy a thing, other than the cranberries; everything else we had on hand. There are many, many more winter projects to choose from, and we are looking forward to all of the wonderful ideas from other seasons, as well.
Some of the projects in this book may have you thinking, "I don't need a book for that!" And yet that is the beauty of this book: All of the great ideas you remember are here, in one nicely spiral-bound book, along with project ideas you may not quite remember, as well as many others. The projects are presented simply enough that you will be able to turn the book over to your children to read to themselves in a few years. I know my children will grow up having fond memories of warm moments shared doing projects from this book. I've given this book as a gift, to the great delight of the recipients. I purchased two of these books as I rarely see my granddaughter, who lives 1600 miles away. I thought it would be a great tool to help us get to know each other better in spite of the distance.
When the book arrived, I looked through it and was disappointed.
Many of the activities (for example, schedule a sleepover at Grandma's house without Mom or Dad, make an art and craft together with candy, read together, etc.) were activities that required Grandma to be close by.

He recently showed a hint of interest in the kitchen and I was not about to let the opportunity slide. This book is exactly what he needed - it is pocket sized, black, and not frilly at all. The recipes are not intimidating and are all the kinds of things that my husband loves to eat. He actually made us the pan-fried steak and bacon mashed potatoes from it last night (even doing his own grocery shopping for it) and was so proud of himself (and it was really good)!! Love it! 1. Simplicity
2. Unexpectedness
3. Concreteness
4. Credibility
5. Emotions
6. Stories
As you might expect, the authors use these techniques to drive home their point. For example, in the chapter on stories, they talk about Subway's Jared campaign--quite a dramatic behind-the-scenes story besides being a near perfect example of storytelling in marketing.
Although these six elements seem like common sense, they are woefully underapplied in business communication. The authors state it well--
"Business managers seem to believe that, once they've clicked through a PowerPoint presentation showcasing their conclusions, they've successfully communicated their ideas. What they've done is share data."

The High-Performance Mind ReviewI'm not sure why Anna Wise gave this book its rather inappropriate title but it is very misleading. The books sounds like some sort of low-grade improvement guide meant for high-power executives searching for ways to increase their ability to outwit dumb consumers and investors; nothing could be further from the truth.
There was a lot of interest in biofeedback in the 1960's and then interest turned to more "scientific" endeavors such as genetics; we're only just beginning to realize our folly. Luckily a few researchers continued what was begun and their hard work and determination can now be seen to have a lot of value.
Wise owes a lot of her background to her mentor, Max Cade, and some rather personal problems she outlines in the book. She combines experience and theory from Eastern meditation with EEG biofeedback work, something Pelletier and others have alluded to for a while. However, Wise really puts a lot of valuable tips and information together and that is the beauty of this book.
The book outlines some basic information about brainwaves and then gets into a great overview of some typical patterns and their apparent link to various personal states. Of course there is no purely theoretical link between what EEG measures and what is happening in your head but there can be no doubt that there is a connection. And this book details some of the important connections.
There is an excellent overview of meditative "states" and their subjective "landmarks". Wise offers some great insight for people who are starting on the path to meditation and are getting stuck at certain points. This material has been available through other sources, notably from the Zen tradition, but these days it can be difficult to make sense of the multitude of books and so-called "masters". Wise's suggestions are straight-forward, simple and clear which is great.
There are guided meditations, again taken from EEG studies, that allow anyone to make his/her own tapes. The visualization exercises have been used successfully in beta-theta biofeedback studies and anyone who has participated in Qigong or Zen will recognize many common elements. But the best part of this book is the clarity and the way information is presented in a manner better suited to those of us from the scientific framework.
That's the funny thing, the information has been available for thousands of years but science is only just beginning to acknowledge it. In the book's final pages Wise details her own struggles with healing blindness and Kundalini rising; something that most Western readers would scoff at without the preceeding pages "explaining" the link to something we can relate to.
Definitely worth buying and, more importantly, using.The High-Performance Mind Overview

Garrett Loporto's wonderful book describes what he calls the Davinci type personality. According to Garrett most successful entrepreneurs, inventors, rock stars are Davinci types who harness the power of their personalities.
If you are wondering why you have not yet made your millions this book is a good place to start looking for the answer.
Being a Davinci type can have its downside. Because of your Davinci personality your behaviour probably meant you did not fit in easily when you were young and adults shamed you until you learnt to suppress your natural instincts. If I had $5 for every time my father said "I do not understand you" I would have been independently wealthy before I finished school.
Loporto points out that suppressing your instincts can lead to:
- Procrastination
- Distractibility
- Irritability
- Addiction
- Listlessness & Depression
- Feeling like a Fraud
- Fear of Success
If any of this resonates with you then read this book. I have just started to read it for the second time and I feel sure I will read it a few more times after that.
