Love Smart: Find the One You Want--Fix the One You Got ReviewDr Phil is spot on as usual.
This book is full of common sense. As you read you discover the great advice, which clearly is directed at women, yet much of it holds true for guys too. I can see how the strategies would work. As a guy I don't want to see all our secrets given away.
Among the many pieces of advice offered are have a life, overcome your own issues such as low self esteem, and learn to love yourself.
Issues can be overcome. After all, if you don't love yourself enough then you are relying on a guy for validation. How can you persuade a guy how fabulous you are if you don't believe it yourself.
That is not a permanent fix, at best its a dubious band aid. Guys know women with low self esteem are not good relationship material, so why do so many women say they have low self esteem. Go figure. The best thing is to be a self sufficient woman, be less available, have alternative plans. Give him the gift of missing you, if necessary. This creates mystery, which is a vital ingredient for developing a relationship. Less is more.
Letting go of seeking perfection in a man is excellent advice. If a guy has 80% of the qualities you are looking for, you should bag him, tag him, and take him home. My sister once dated a guy, and said 'if he had a chipped front tooth he'd be perfect.' So even perfection is not all its cracked up to be.
Develop an abundance mentality. Women search for 'the one'. There are many who fit the bill from a pool of billions to choose from. Let go of scarcity.
I thought the advice on bringing up the subject of marriage was particularly good, avoiding the ultimatum. Another book I read mentions that women have to bring up this subject almost 70% of the time.
The advice on date topics and questions is also excellent. There should be a rule about not talking about your job, the weather, and telling the story of your life like a history lesson, and conducting a date like a job interview. These are just routine, and guys get these types of conversations from their buddies. Excluding these topics forces you to be interesting. Talk about what excites you instead.
Unlike other bestselling dating books, I can see how this book would work, and the more you apply the concepts the better they will work for you.
Oh, and if you want to improve your ability to love yourself and others, I recommend Soul Love: Awakening Your Heart Centers (Roman, Sanaya) by Sanaya Roman, in which you use your imagination and work with your chakras. It literally is a heartwarming book. My number one recommend in this genre is Why Men Love Bitches: From Doormat to Dreamgirl - A Woman's Guide to Holding Her Own in a Relationship. B.I.T.C.H means Babe In Total Control of Herself.
Hope this was useful.Love Smart: Find the One You Want--Fix the One You Got Overview

300 Classic Blocks for Crochet Projects ReviewAfter waiting several weeks for this book, I received it today and sat down with it immediately. It is beautifully written with easy to follow symbol illustrations, but the photographed pictures of the finished blocks are terrible. The blocks are ironed so flat that the textures and stitch details are lost, making many look like an unrecognizable blob, and the loop edges of some were not blocked at all, but left to curl and bunch. Furthermore, most of the blocks are pictured with the WRONG side of the work facing. The idea behind the book is a good one, to have a handy reference book of so many different kinds of blocks, but I would not recommend it for a beginner crocheter, especially those who depend on pictures to see what the patterns will look like. I have been crocheting for over 40 years and have several stitch and block reference books. I wish I had not spent money on this one.300 Classic Blocks for Crochet Projects Overview

Crochet Edgings & Trims (Harmony Guides) ReviewEdgings are fun--you can make a design by taking a flat piece of something (towel?) or you can dress up a plain knit or crochet design with an edging. (One gift I was given is a regular old hand towel with a crocheted top and loop, and some decorative edging. It is the HANDIEST thing for the bath, kitchen or garden to wipe hands. If you like to crochet and give gifts, these are fun to make and great to give as a houseguest gift.)
This book has edgings in crochet, along with large photos and clear diagrams. UNLIKE many edging books (and there are MANY), this book is useful for the way it's presented. There may not be so many edgings, and they may be some you've seen before (half rounds, shells, etc) but the photos are so large and clear, and the diagrams so easy to read that it makes crocheting a breeze. There are WRITTEN instructions below, for those of you who do not like charts.
There were a few unusual edgings I particularly liked--several interesting fringes including a fan-like Dandelion Fringe (fringe emanating from a flower center on the band), an undulating fringe and a tassel-like fringe. I also liked a simple cable band that had a sideways ribbed cable; this would be a wonderful way to add cable insertions to a crocheted vest.
There are many things you can do with these edgings. Even though you may have an edging book, I recommend this one for the new edgings and the beautiful, clean pages with easy-to-read instructions. Very nice book.Crochet Edgings & Trims (Harmony Guides) Overview

Just Grandma and Me: The Fill-In, Tear-Out, Fold-Up Book of Fun for Girls and Their Grandmas (American Girl) ReviewThe description of this book says, "explore fun ideas on how to stay connected even if you live miles apart." I purchased two of these books as I rarely see my granddaughter, who lives 1600 miles away. I thought it would be a great tool to help us get to know each other better in spite of the distance.
When the book arrived, I looked through it and was disappointed.
Many of the activities (for example, schedule a sleepover at Grandma's house without Mom or Dad, make an art and craft together with candy, read together, etc.) were activities that required Grandma to be close by.
Be advised if you live more than a 2-hour trip away from your granddaughter, this book might not be what you're looking for.Just Grandma and Me: The Fill-In, Tear-Out, Fold-Up Book of Fun for Girls and Their Grandmas (American Girl) Overview

Prize-Winning Science Fair Projects for Curious Kids ReviewI stumbled upon this book in a local store and got the chance to look it over before I bought it. It took me less than 20 seconds to decide: "This is a GREAT book!" and buy it.
Prize-Winning Science Fair Projects for Curious Kids is a wonderful resource for elementary school (4th/5th grade students) science fair projects because the book is fun and engaging. Project names like "Bow-Wow Blood Pressure" and "Yeast Feast" catch your child's eye and then grab their attention. That spark of interest catches fire and you're off to the Science Fair with a great project that was fun to do.
The first part of the book talks about science fairs. What the judges are looking for, how to be successful with your project, an 8-week checklist, what is a 'scientific method' of research, how to turn a topic into a question and how to write a good report. Graphs and tables are discussed, and examples of each are shown. LOTS of good, clear information for both students and their advisors.
The next part of the book is all about the 52 projects in the book.
-Biology (20 projects)with titles such as "Moldy Slices of Life" and "Pooch Smooch".
-Physical Science (18 projects) with titles including "Parachute Power" and "Popcorn Fever".
-Chemistry (15 projects) including "Shake It Up Baby!" and "Yeast Feast".
Each project clearly outlines the problem or question to be answered by the experiment, experiment summary, what you need for the experiment, experimental procedure, how to formulate your conclusion, display tips and thought-provoking questions for varying the experiment. Fun photographs and drawings accompany the information which is laid out in way that's easy to read and understand.
I highly recommend buying this book for any child who is interested in doing a Science Fair project or wants to simply have fun learning about simple science.

Beyond the Square Crochet Motifs: 144 circles, hexagons, triangles, squares, and other unexpected shapes ReviewI bought this book because the cover was pretty, really - and that's not a bad reason at all, because the excellent color pictures continue inside. But there are many other reasons to like the book.
I crochet a lot of baby afghans and wedding afghans and shawls, and yeah, I got tired of the plain old granny square oh, about 30 years ago - but I keep on doing it because it's easy to do and because it's a great way to use up scraps of color. Well, this book gives me lots more ways to use up small quantities of leftover yarn, and many of the motifs are as easy as granny squares, so I'll be able to do a couple to learn them, then do them on autopilot, where I don't need to look at the pattern any more, or even at the yarn - so I can do them in the dark, at symphony concerts and movies and on long car rides. Motifs are also handy for those kinds of times, because you don't have a single huge crocheted something that you have to haul around with you and that starts taking up the seat next to you once you're more than half done.
Some of the circular motifs will become coasters without any sewing together needed, and they can also become the bottom of bottle cozies or can cozies ("koozies"), or, in a larger gauge and larger hook and cotton yarn, become trivets for your table. But the hexagons are my favorites - not only do they make good coasters, but they make lovely bedspreads with edges full of little points, like prairie points - make one just slightly larger than the top of the bed, so that the points just hang over the edge. Motif #54 is every bit as easy to do as a granny square - think of it as a granny hexagon - and think of producing a crocheted throw or spread that resembles a "grandmother's flower garden" quilt pattern! If you want fewer color changes so you can make these while watching TV or otherwise doing two things at once, motifs 31, 32, and 33 have only two colors.
The triangle motifs require a bit more fudging and stretching to make them have exactly straight edges and fit together the way quilt pieces would; I plan to use these triangles more in a freeform manner, with circles and odd shapes combined to make a large regular shape out of many small irregular ones.
And - surprise! - there are squares as well, and things that have four corners although not straight sides, such as motif #94, which would fit in a square but is sort of a four-petalled flower.
And the irregular shapes - well, my favorite is the oval #125, which looks just like a miniature braided rug, and so will make lots of cute little "mug rugs" as coasters.
In short, a wealth of ideas, motifs from easy to advanced, sure to provide lots of satisfaction even though there are not any complete patterns for afghans or garments.Beyond the Square Crochet Motifs: 144 circles, hexagons, triangles, squares, and other unexpected shapes Overview

Janice VanCleave's Earthquakes: Mind-boggling Experiments You Can Turn Into Science Fair Projects ReviewI first saw this book on sale at the Liberty Science Center and decided I could use it as a source of ideas to help me teach earthquake science. There are not a great deal of hands-on activities suggested by text books to help students relate to the ideas underpinning earthquake science. This book satisfies a void by suggesting many relevant experiements. I would have loved to receive this book as a gift when I was a student.Janice VanCleave's Earthquakes: Mind-boggling Experiments You Can Turn Into Science Fair Projects Overview

As I Am, A True Story of Adaptation to Physical Disability ReviewA few times in a lifetime, we come upon a person or a story that impacts us so deeply our entire field of awareness is altered. It may open our eyes to a whole new world we'd never considered before, compel us to study a new philosophy, or possibly give us a new hero to place above all previous heroes. A time such as this came to me when Garret Lee Frey entered my life in a most unexpected way. I met him between the covers of As I Am, a most touching book and his first effort at sharing his story and his incredible life.
At the time I met Garret, he was a "nearly five year old boy." A child filled with wonderment, Garret reveled in all his god-given senses and was driven to explore the "the world around him." He loved the April breeze on his cheeks, the nature presented to him by the row of evergreens that filled his back yard with the sweet aroma of pine.
Garret had no premonition of the approaching moment in time in which life, as he knew and understood it, would come to an end . . . "I do not remember the day I was born and I do not remember the day that I died. I only remember my life `As I Am.'"
It was April 24, 1987. Garret jumped for joy into his father's arms when he showed up at the babysitter's home to pick him up. In the driveway, sat his father's shiny motorcycle. His dad had previously taken him and his older brother for short rides in the neighborhood, always paying careful heed to the helmet laws and rules for cycle safety, but this would be the longest ride Garret had ever taken before. A full mile from the babysitter's home to his own with a promised stop for bubble gum on the way. Seated safely, helmet in place, Garret was ready for the ride of his life. But, the mysteries of fate were at hand.
Garret had forgotten his trusty yellow scarf, his favorite security blanket, that special thing in the life of a four year old. Understanding, his father went back to retrieve the scarf and tied it securely around Garret's neck, tucking the tied ends inside his jacket. An extra measure of warmth on a breezy April day. Soon, Garret was reveling in the wind on his face, planning his out-of-doors play on the arrival home, and anticipating the sweet, spicy taste of his favorite bubble gum. As his curious mind was taken in by the joys of life around him, he vowed to live each day to its fullest. Then, fate entered in. Garret was about to experience a course change he could never have imagined.
In that miniscule flash of time, the beginnings of Garret's story were written. The destiny of his life's journey would also become the journey of those closest to him, dedicated parents, family, and one most special friend. Over the years, many other lives walked parts of this journey with Garret. Precedents were set, and barriers broken down that will affect generations to come, especially in education. Now, through a magnificent effort on the part of Garret and that one special friend, Dr. Karen Pirnot, we all have been invited to walk a while by his side.
For me, an attempt to guide the reader's perceptions with a typical written review critiquing my own journey with Garret and Dr. Pirnot would fall far short. It would sadly lack the power which lies between the pages of As I Am. Only Garret can tell his story.
Yet, after my own walk with Garret and Dr. Pirnot, I can offer this insight . . . Anyone who loves beauty, the power and glory of Nature working with the power of mind and Spirit, will be moved. Anyone who admires courage, determination, and the perseverance of the wind itself, will be touched. Anyone who has wandered on the edge of peril and despair will be given hope. Anyone who has already fallen over the cliff will be lifted up. Anyone who lacks a real hero in their life will find one in Garret Lee Frey.
