365 Crochet Stitches a Year Perpetual Calendar ReviewThis fantastic calendar is full of stitch patterns, which you can use for any crochet project you desire..... afghans, scarves, hats, sweaters, etc. This calendar does NOT include projects, just stitches, but the possibilities are endless. Wouldn't it be fun to make a sampler afghan using a different stitch pattern for each block?
Each day's entry is complete and does not run into multiple days. And there is one entry for each and every day of the year, including February 29th! Don't let the title of the calendar scare you off in a leap year.
Because the calendar is a perpetual calendar, you will not find days of the week, nor will you find holidays listed, since many holidays move around from year to year. What you will find are holiday themed stitch patterns on certain days, such as Irish Fans for March 17th and Deck the Halls for December 25th. And you will also find a great photo of the stitch pattern. And being a perpetual calendar, you can start using it the day it arrives.
Some stitch patterns are very classic looking and others are quite unique. Many stitch patterns employ familar stitches such as popcorns, shells, fans, front & back posts, V-stitches, picots, but they do so in a variety and clever ways. What a pleasure to look through 366 stitch patterns! And you gotta' love a calendar that includes a stitch pattern called Frisky Fans!ps 8/11/09 - Just uploaded a photo of a stitch I used...March 28th's Lovely Lace.365 Crochet Stitches a Year Perpetual Calendar Overview

300 Classic Blocks for Crochet Projects ReviewAfter waiting several weeks for this book, I received it today and sat down with it immediately. It is beautifully written with easy to follow symbol illustrations, but the photographed pictures of the finished blocks are terrible. The blocks are ironed so flat that the textures and stitch details are lost, making many look like an unrecognizable blob, and the loop edges of some were not blocked at all, but left to curl and bunch. Furthermore, most of the blocks are pictured with the WRONG side of the work facing. The idea behind the book is a good one, to have a handy reference book of so many different kinds of blocks, but I would not recommend it for a beginner crocheter, especially those who depend on pictures to see what the patterns will look like. I have been crocheting for over 40 years and have several stitch and block reference books. I wish I had not spent money on this one.300 Classic Blocks for Crochet Projects Overview

Hip 2 B Square Throws 4 Home (Leisure Arts #5281) ReviewThe best part of this leaflet is the fact that all of the 15 squares are the same size, 8 inch, and thus interchangeable. The crocheter can use the motifs to make several different afghans or use them all to make the cover afghan. Total of 5 afghans shown. Yarn used is worsted #4. The patterns are graded according to level of difficulty. There are two other leaflets available with similar size squares: baby wraps and totes and bags by the same author and publisher. the leaflet is well done with large size print and large color illustrations. I felt the price was too high.Hip 2 B Square Throws 4 Home (Leisure Arts #5281) Overview

Crochet Edgings & Trims (Harmony Guides) ReviewEdgings are fun--you can make a design by taking a flat piece of something (towel?) or you can dress up a plain knit or crochet design with an edging. (One gift I was given is a regular old hand towel with a crocheted top and loop, and some decorative edging. It is the HANDIEST thing for the bath, kitchen or garden to wipe hands. If you like to crochet and give gifts, these are fun to make and great to give as a houseguest gift.)
This book has edgings in crochet, along with large photos and clear diagrams. UNLIKE many edging books (and there are MANY), this book is useful for the way it's presented. There may not be so many edgings, and they may be some you've seen before (half rounds, shells, etc) but the photos are so large and clear, and the diagrams so easy to read that it makes crocheting a breeze. There are WRITTEN instructions below, for those of you who do not like charts.
There were a few unusual edgings I particularly liked--several interesting fringes including a fan-like Dandelion Fringe (fringe emanating from a flower center on the band), an undulating fringe and a tassel-like fringe. I also liked a simple cable band that had a sideways ribbed cable; this would be a wonderful way to add cable insertions to a crocheted vest.
There are many things you can do with these edgings. Even though you may have an edging book, I recommend this one for the new edgings and the beautiful, clean pages with easy-to-read instructions. Very nice book.Crochet Edgings & Trims (Harmony Guides) Overview

The Crochet Stitch Bible ReviewThere are 200 crochet stitches in this spiral bound book which makes it easy to use while crocheting. Useful index with all the stitches by name. Each stitch has illustration, instructions and chart with international symbols. Also a stitch key on right side of every odd numbered page which means you can read the charts as the symbols are right there. Stitches are grouped into broad categories such as mesh and filet. Also more details in back about the symbols and abbreviations. The terms are American with a comparison to the English in the back. My one criticism is that the actual pictures of the stitches are very dull and small when more colors would certainly have brightened up the book. Hopefully Barnden will be persuaded to bring out a second volume with more stitches. Very useful important addition to the growing crochet stitch collection. The Crochet Stitch Bible Overview

The Granny Square Book: Timeless Techniques and Fresh Ideas for Crocheting Square by Square Review(This review is part of a series of reviews of books in my granny square collection. For these reviews, the # of granny squares refers to the number of patterns for squares that are crocheted in the round, not the total number of patterns in the book.)
Summary: An ode to the granny square, with 75 motif patterns and 25 projects using granny squares, along with tips for construction, design, and finishing touches. Uses U.S. pattern abbreviations for motifs and projects, and international stitch symbols for motifs.
# of granny squares: 74
What I like:
The spiral binding allows the book to lay flat so you can read and crochet at the same time.
All motif patterns include both U.S. pattern abbreviations and international stitch symbols.
The introduction includes reflections on the Hubert family's love of grannies, as well as personal quotes from other crochet designers about granny squares.
The "Crochet Basics" section includes descriptions with photos of crochet stitches (including basics and special stitches), so the book is very beginner friendly. This section also includes an overview of crochet pattern reading, multiple techniques for starting a motif (adjustable loop, slip knot, and chain ring), joining and seaming working with multiple colors, and edgings. This section includes plenty of text and also some step-by-step photos. This chapter is something you can skip over and just dive into the patterns, but it includes the types of tips and tricks that can make your work look more polished.
There are many really pretty floral themed grannies.
Three of the motif patterns include matching half square (triangle) patterns.
Each motif pattern includes a difficulty rating.
The project section includes some design tips and suggestions for "graphing out" project ideas.
What I didn't like or what's missing:
Six motif (5 granny) patterns were already included in The Complete Photo Guide to Crochet: *All You Need to Know to Crochet *The Essential Reference for Novice and Expert Crocheters *Comprehensive Guide ... Charts, and Photos for 200 Stitch Patterns, another book by Hubert published by Creative Publishing International.
There is a fair amount of overlap in content in the Crochet Basics section of this book and the Crochet Motif Workshop section of Beyond the Square: Crochet Motifs: 144 Circles, Hexagons, Triangles, Squares, and Other Unexpected Shapes. The motif patterns are different enough to make it worthwhile to own both books, though.
Most of the swatches are made with mercerized cotton, and there is a lot of "shine" visible in the pictures.
The project patterns don't include international stitch symbols.
Type: Spiral-bound hardcover book.
Overall rating (out of 5 stars): 5 (If you already own Beyond the Square: Crochet Motifs: 144 Circles, Hexagons, Triangles, Squares, and Other Unexpected Shapes, remember that you will already have a lot of the same content, but different motif patterns.)The Granny Square Book: Timeless Techniques and Fresh Ideas for Crocheting Square by Square Overview

63 Easy-to-Crochet Pattern Stitches (Leisure Arts #555) ReviewThis book taught me my first crochet patterns; ALL 63! My first Afghan came out exactly like the one on the cover and I have learned to incorporate the stitches I've learned into other self designed afghans. I have used these wonderful patterns so much that my book is torn apart, pages lost, stained, and you name it. I am buying a new one which I WILL enclose in sheet protectors! I have made many beautiful things and this book is responsible for all of them. I had never crocheted before this. A whole new world has been opened up for me. Beyond the Square Crochet Motifs: 144 circles, hexagons, triangles, squares, and other unexpected shapes ReviewI bought this book because the cover was pretty, really - and that's not a bad reason at all, because the excellent color pictures continue inside. But there are many other reasons to like the book.
I crochet a lot of baby afghans and wedding afghans and shawls, and yeah, I got tired of the plain old granny square oh, about 30 years ago - but I keep on doing it because it's easy to do and because it's a great way to use up scraps of color. Well, this book gives me lots more ways to use up small quantities of leftover yarn, and many of the motifs are as easy as granny squares, so I'll be able to do a couple to learn them, then do them on autopilot, where I don't need to look at the pattern any more, or even at the yarn - so I can do them in the dark, at symphony concerts and movies and on long car rides. Motifs are also handy for those kinds of times, because you don't have a single huge crocheted something that you have to haul around with you and that starts taking up the seat next to you once you're more than half done.
Some of the circular motifs will become coasters without any sewing together needed, and they can also become the bottom of bottle cozies or can cozies ("koozies"), or, in a larger gauge and larger hook and cotton yarn, become trivets for your table. But the hexagons are my favorites - not only do they make good coasters, but they make lovely bedspreads with edges full of little points, like prairie points - make one just slightly larger than the top of the bed, so that the points just hang over the edge. Motif #54 is every bit as easy to do as a granny square - think of it as a granny hexagon - and think of producing a crocheted throw or spread that resembles a "grandmother's flower garden" quilt pattern! If you want fewer color changes so you can make these while watching TV or otherwise doing two things at once, motifs 31, 32, and 33 have only two colors.
The triangle motifs require a bit more fudging and stretching to make them have exactly straight edges and fit together the way quilt pieces would; I plan to use these triangles more in a freeform manner, with circles and odd shapes combined to make a large regular shape out of many small irregular ones.
And - surprise! - there are squares as well, and things that have four corners although not straight sides, such as motif #94, which would fit in a square but is sort of a four-petalled flower.
And the irregular shapes - well, my favorite is the oval #125, which looks just like a miniature braided rug, and so will make lots of cute little "mug rugs" as coasters.
In short, a wealth of ideas, motifs from easy to advanced, sure to provide lots of satisfaction even though there are not any complete patterns for afghans or garments.Beyond the Square Crochet Motifs: 144 circles, hexagons, triangles, squares, and other unexpected shapes Overview

Crocheting in Plain English, Second Edition Review"Crocheting in Plain English" gives in-depth instruction on how to crochet. The author assumes you're an absolute beginner, but this book is also useful for beginners in general and people who have taught themselves to crochet.
Actually, this book almost has too much information for the absolute beginner. When I read the first few chapters, I had never bought yarn or any of the equipment. I was hoping to save time and money by getting it right the first time. I was almost overwhelmed by the depth of information she gave. Yet she sometimes didn't give enough information when I really wanted more (like she said she found one general type of hook better than another, but she didn't really say why). After working with several types of yarns and hooks, I understood that whole section, but it wasn't clear until then. And I did end up having to buy another set of hooks (Susan Bates hooks) to replace the Boye hooks I'd initially bought.
I also found it a bit ironic that she (very poetically) stated that you must hold the hook and yarn in a certain way--and I already knew from watching a few YouTube videos that not everyone did it that way--yet later, when teaching stitches, she was very "do whatever works for you" in attitude.
Overall, though, I found this book to be very useful and instructive. I think it's main strengths are teaching you to read patterns, teaching you to understand how various "fancy stitches" are put together so you can "mix and match" to make your own, and helping you understand how to create your own project patterns. I had problems figuring out three of the non-basic stitches (due to either a poor illustration, an error in the pattern diagram, or her using a term that she usually used to mean something else), but I did eventually figure them all out.The book covered:
Chapter 1 - The history of crochet.
Chapter 2 - Being honest with yourself when picking projects.
Chapter 3 - Choosing threads and yarns (sizing, quality, finishes, and color & dye lot).
Chapter 4 - Choosing crochet hooks (parts of, shapes, material made of, and sizes).
Chapter 5 - How to determine gauge for a printed-instruction project.
Chapter 6 - Introduction to reading patterns.
Chapter 7 - Other supplies (bag, scissors, yarn needles, tape measure, ring markers, etc.).
Chapter 8 - Basics: how to hold the hook, make a slip loop, and crochet left- or right-handed.
Chapter 9 - Chain Stitch (how to do it and the pattern abbreviation)
Chapter 10 - Single Crochet Stitch (American) (how to do it, what it's good for, and the pattern abbreviation)
Chapter 11 - Half-Double Crochet Stitch
Chapter 12 - Double Crochet Stitch
Chapter 13 - Treble Crochet Stitch & longer stitches
Chapter 14 - Slip Stitch
Chapter 15 - Several ways to add new yarn/change colors.
Chapter 16 - Increasing (several methods)
Chapter 17 - Decreasing (several methods), Puff Stitch
Chapter 18 - You don't have to work through both loops, you don't have to put your hook in the next stitch, and several other variations. Making a circle. Crab stitch. Crossed stitches. Picots. Popcorn stitch.
Chapter 19 - How to improvise and invent.
Chapter 20 - Several ways to fix mistakes.
Chapter 21 - Fancy stitches: mesh fabrics, filet crochet, open V, simple double crochet shells (2 ways), combining a shell and V (2 ways), ripple afghan stitch, fishnet, arch stitch, herringbone, diagonal popcorns, lover's knots, spiderweb, up-and-down stitch, my lady's fan, and Queen Anne's lace.
Chapter 22 - Making medallions and Motifs: Black-Eyed Susans, Granny Squares, Spiral Pinwheel Hexagon, Irish Rose Square with Picots, Pineapple in Square, and circular flower motif.
Chapter 23 - How to add lace edgings to linens. Edging patterns: picoted double crochet shells, morning sunrise, handmade rickrack, lovely lace, festive fans, pineapples, and violets.
Chapter 24 - Crocheted decorations: cabbage rose, pansy, double daisy, chrysanthemum, 5-point star, 4-leafed clover, and butterfly.
Chapter 25 - How to do multicolor jacquard crochet patterns. Patterns: balloons, never-ending triangles, and plaids.
Chapter 26 - Several methods of joining several-piece projects together.
Chapter 27 - Decorative finishing touches: how to make fringe, tassels, pom-poms, twisted monk's cord, crocheted cord, and yarn buttons (round or flat).
Chapter 28 - How to store and wash crocheted objects.
Chapter 29 - Project: Sampler Scarf

Twinkie Chan's Crochet Goodies for Fashion Foodies: 20 Yummy Treats to Wear ReviewI pre ordered this about two months before it came out. I was expecting to just see a few of some of Twinkie Chan's awesome items, but there are tons of her signature items. There are 20 patterns, most of them being scarfs that are made from small pieces that are crocheted together.
It includes three sections: Sweets things, Fruits and Veggies, and Savory stuff.
The patterns it includes are
Cupcake Scarf
Candy Button Scarf
Gingerbread Man Scarf (My favorite)
Lemon Coconut Cake Tissue Cozy
Rocket Popsicle Scarf
Soft Serve Ice Cream Scarf
Cupcake Hat with Frosting
Green Salad Scarf
Pink Grapefruit Scarf
Baby Raddish Lariat Scarf
Pear Scarf
Giant Carrot Scar
Strawberry Fingerless Mittens
Bacon and Eggs Scarf
Buttered Toast Scarf
Sushi Scarf
Pepperoni Pizza Scarf
Popcorn Scarf
Spaghetti n Meatballs Scarf
Twinkie's patterns are fairly simple to follow so any advanced beginner or intermediate should be able to follow them without problems, but beginners might need some help. Her designs are abit out there and not for everyone's taste but they can easily be adapted to suit most everyone's taste. The food motifs could be made into coasters, pot holders, purses or many other things. The Spaghetti Scarf is a simple fun way for someone to start felting. The popsicle scarf could easily be a regular scarf and is a nice simple crocheted cable scarf. The Cupcake hat is worked flat and produces a beautiful textured piece that makes diagonal stripes. I loved that one and I think I'll be using that technique for many different things.
It's a beautiful high quality book with tons of creative patterns that every crocheter should try.
It doesn't have crochet charts for patterns but she does have tons of pictures and diagrams for how to sew pieces together or arrange them. Most crochet books are bogged down with pages of beginner how tos but Twinkie's is not. It does include basic images on how to do you basic stitches and decreases. She lists well recognized resource websites for people to learn and get more patterns. (Many of which I use and was where I learned) There's information on yarn weights and what tools are needed.
The tone of the book is very friendly and encouraging similar to a way a friend might be teaching you. Lots of creative and unique designs that are perfect to get your own creative bug going, to learn a few new techniques or ways to use simple stitches to make something special.Twinkie Chan's Crochet Goodies for Fashion Foodies: 20 Yummy Treats to Wear Overview

154 Crochet Wave Patterns (Leisure Arts #4312) ReviewI ordered this book from Amazon without having seen it in the store first based on the description, and the pictures on the front and back cover. I expected to receive a book with a ton of wave patterns......and that is exactly what I got. This book contains "154 Wave Patterns", and one thing I like about this book is the pretty modern color combinations. The color combinations featured throughout the book are similar to those used on the covers, they are really inspiring to look at. There is a very good variety here as well. Some times with these books that contain 100+ patterns for anything you will find that a lot of the patterns are basically the same, except for a few stitch changes. These patterns are actually different, which is nice. I would recommend adding this book to your crochet library.154 Crochet Wave Patterns (Leisure Arts #4312) Overview

The Complete Photo Guide to Crochet: *All You Need to Know to Crochet *The Essential Reference for Novice and Expert Crocheters *Comprehensive Guide ... Charts, and Photos for 200 Stitch Patterns ReviewI just received this book yesterday. It is amazing. Beautiful, clear photographs. Easy to understand explanations. Lots of inspiration. I am currently working my first motif project. I already used the tip on a better way to fasten off motifs. This is also my first major project with seams. The book shows a number of techniques with clear pictures and instructions. Some other helpful techniques include button holes and zippers.
I consider myself an intermediate crocheter. This book provides new inspiration to challenge myself to explore more intricate projects and different types of crochet. The book is a comprehensive guide to so many types of crochet, including various lace techniques and freeform crochet.
Depending on the person, this many not be the book for an absolute new beginner. While there are instructions for the basics, the rest may be overwhelming. I suggest you first try your hand at a little crocher, then jump into this book for inspiration.
Note: While the book has instructions for a number of completed projects as examples, its main focus is techniques. It's up to you to apply the techniques to your designs. This is not something I've done in the past, but it's where I want to challenge myself to go.
For the price, this book is an absolutely incredible value. I expect to use this book as a reference for a long time to come. The Complete Photo Guide to Crochet: *All You Need to Know to Crochet *The Essential Reference for Novice and Expert Crocheters *Comprehensive Guide ... Donna Kooler's Encyclopedia of Crochet (Leisure Arts #15906) (Donna Kooler's Series) ReviewI've been crocheting for over 30 years and have tons of books and patterns, but this book is one of the best I've seen. It is useful for someone who has never picked up a hook to an advanced crocheter who wants to pick up a new technique, project, or pattern.
Fist of all, it covers the basics--the history of crochet, how to crochet, stitches, yarns, threads, and needles. It also covers different techniques--filet crochet, Tunisian crochet, changing colors, wire crochet, bead crochet...etc.
The instructions are clear. I like that there are international symbols too. Also, the instructions of basic stitches and techniques are shown for left and right-handed crocheters.
There are lots of neat projects from baby blankets, to a challenging "Philosopher's Coat". Also, there is a pattern directory. I love the pineapple and strawberry patterns!
Also, it is a gorgeous book. It has a clean design and is a nice size and length--makes a nice coffee table book. The projects are modern and beautiful, and the photography is lovely.
I plan to make a pineapple afghan and try my hand at some bead crochet. Maybe one day, I'll try my hand at that "Philosopher's Coat".
There is so much information and instruction for just about anyone to improve their skills as a crocheter or to get started. It is a guide that I know I'll refer to often.Donna Kooler's Encyclopedia of Crochet (Leisure Arts #15906) (Donna Kooler's Series) Overview

Crochet the Complete Guide Reviewyou are a beginner and want to do crochet?
buy this book.
before buying it I was hesitating between this one and " crochet A to Z" and I chose this one, and I did great>
I am a beginner in crochet and french, the language is twice difficult for me, but this book IS THE answer!
you have different ways to explain the stitches, which help when the 1st one one was not understood...
plus you have pictures of what you are supposed to expect .
but the more important in crochet is how you are supposed to tight your wool on the crochet and this book explains little details like that very easily!!!
(I tried other books... I prefer not living any feed back...)
BUY IT, because you have the basics, plus the way to use them together...
a hard cover protects the spiraled pages , which keep it flat and stable when you try to begin some stitches.... but I am sure professional of crochet will find a great condensate of a good reminder!
