Giver of Gifts: Three Stories of Christmas Grace Review
If you are a collector of feel good stories that make you think as well as entertain you, check into this small book.

A tale of a real life mother who managed to carry four-feet-eleven inches in reality but "swelled" to eleven-foot-four is charming. The author has even adapted it to a children's book. Hope, love and forgiveness fill the story and I struggled with keeping dry eyes.

The second story within the book visits Joseph huddled with the newborn Christ, shielding the baby from the storm outside and the less than perfect conditions of life. Joseph muses and shares his hard earned wisdom with his sleeping child in the touching write-up.

Finally, a teen girl with a chip on her shoulder gets a chance to see the world through different eyes. With a little bit of magical help she digs deeper and discovers that what is visible on the surface is not necessarily truth. A lovely story of acceptance and grace.

Overall the book is a mere 150 pages and each story is a stand alone and quick read.Giver of Gifts: Three Stories of Christmas Grace Overview

Love Smart: Find the One You Want--Fix the One You Got ReviewDr Phil is spot on as usual.
This book is full of common sense. As you read you discover the great advice, which clearly is directed at women, yet much of it holds true for guys too. I can see how the strategies would work. As a guy I don't want to see all our secrets given away.
Among the many pieces of advice offered are have a life, overcome your own issues such as low self esteem, and learn to love yourself.
Issues can be overcome. After all, if you don't love yourself enough then you are relying on a guy for validation. How can you persuade a guy how fabulous you are if you don't believe it yourself.
That is not a permanent fix, at best its a dubious band aid. Guys know women with low self esteem are not good relationship material, so why do so many women say they have low self esteem. Go figure. The best thing is to be a self sufficient woman, be less available, have alternative plans. Give him the gift of missing you, if necessary. This creates mystery, which is a vital ingredient for developing a relationship. Less is more.
Letting go of seeking perfection in a man is excellent advice. If a guy has 80% of the qualities you are looking for, you should bag him, tag him, and take him home. My sister once dated a guy, and said 'if he had a chipped front tooth he'd be perfect.' So even perfection is not all its cracked up to be.
Develop an abundance mentality. Women search for 'the one'. There are many who fit the bill from a pool of billions to choose from. Let go of scarcity.
I thought the advice on bringing up the subject of marriage was particularly good, avoiding the ultimatum. Another book I read mentions that women have to bring up this subject almost 70% of the time.
The advice on date topics and questions is also excellent. There should be a rule about not talking about your job, the weather, and telling the story of your life like a history lesson, and conducting a date like a job interview. These are just routine, and guys get these types of conversations from their buddies. Excluding these topics forces you to be interesting. Talk about what excites you instead.
Unlike other bestselling dating books, I can see how this book would work, and the more you apply the concepts the better they will work for you.
Oh, and if you want to improve your ability to love yourself and others, I recommend Soul Love: Awakening Your Heart Centers (Roman, Sanaya) by Sanaya Roman, in which you use your imagination and work with your chakras. It literally is a heartwarming book. My number one recommend in this genre is Why Men Love Bitches: From Doormat to Dreamgirl - A Woman's Guide to Holding Her Own in a Relationship. B.I.T.C.H means Babe In Total Control of Herself.
Hope this was useful.Love Smart: Find the One You Want--Fix the One You Got Overview

Seeing Redd: Looking Glass Wars, Book Two (The Looking Glass Wars) ReviewThis second volume in Beddor's "The Looking Glass Wars" series decides to pick up the story where the earlier volume left off. With a war-weary Alyss trying to consolidate and rebuild her kingdom and become accustomed to the responsibilities of rule while dealing with all the loss and pain of the past. Trouble is looming, all too clearly in the future and Alyss has many enemies and plotters to face that seek to dethrone her and claim Wonderland for their own. For those who haven't read The Looking Glass Wars, this book won't be easy to read without having the back story from the original.
Of course, there's no doubt with the title that the main villain of the first book will be back. Redd is now loose on Earth, gathering together a dark force of exiled Wonderlanders and villains who flock to her side. Like the first volume in the series, this one relies on some references to the classic work of Alice in Wonderland as well as other literature and mythology--but from there it departs into its own territory. Redd is out to retake her place as reining sovereign of Wonderland and to crush all resistance and goodness that might oppose her. King Arch of Boarderland is a scheming, chauvinistic tyrant who wants to undermine Alyss and Wonderland for his own ends--and has a weapon that threatens the destruction of both countries if used. Against them is Alyss, and her band of faithful Wonderlanders who seek to restore peace and white imagination to the land. In its way it is an interesting plot and characters, but it just doesn't completely work.
To be honest, this series has an identity crisis. The idea of basing a story on the original writings of Lewis Carroll but changing the original perception is intriguing and not without some merit. But Beddor takes only the surface images and suggestions--ignoring Carroll's deeper satire and symbolism and suggesting that, in fact, Carroll is a foolish man who keeps getting the story wrong. Granted, this is the author's prerogative to do--but it may put off admirers of Lewis Carroll who find the depiction unpalatable. Likewise, the original Alice stories tend to work without a sense of good vs. evil--everything is kept much more ambiguous. Beddor's work follows a much more strict aligning of good and evil and places the players in their assigned roles without much wiggle room. A bigger problem is the tone and setting: the prospect of Alyss being a princess, then Queen of Wonderland and the champion of White Imagination in a place where talking caterpillars live and tarty tarts are served sounds like something out of a kiddie story. There's a strange sense of naiveté about the fantasy background that is a bit like someone setting up a Disney animated movie--and then throwing live action battle scenes into it. The violence is overkill--quite literally. Beddor's story keeps trying to play two contrary tunes that don't mesh well and made reading it an uneasy experience.
There are deadly characters who sound more at home in an X-men movie. There are weapons of massive violence and death, pain, betrayal. There are dark plots that would be more at home in an epic fantasy for adults. Redd kills her own parents when they deny her the throne. Dodge Anders is trying to deal with his desire for revenge and love for Alyss. Hatter grieves for his lost love. Some of the depictions of these characters are quite good: the Jack of Diamonds being one of the more surprising, and Hatter coming into his own. But these are overshadowed by the two-dimensional depictions of the main villains and Alyss herself. Alyss is all good, white imagination. Redd is all bad, black imagination. The extremes of Redd and her band are caricatures--when so many of the other characters are trying to achieve a more rounded appearance. And then from the dark and violent--there are scenes like the one where Redd treats the caterpillars to Tarty Tarts for information and the whole tribe of them act like a group of lost boys from Peter Pan. It's too silly and trivial in a story that has become so dark. Likewise the constant presence of "cute" Wonderland references--dormouse snouts, chessmen, card soldiers, etc. -keep pulling the reader out of the story and disrupting the tension. Beddor's writing feels like it wants to leap out of the strict black/white, good/bad mentality, but doesn't quite know how to break down the child-like pardigm and put something more complex in its place.
The first book in this series was a bit on the questionable side for younger readers because of the violence inherent--this book really doesn't merit being termed a children's book at all. It is an adult fantasy novel that has some interesting ideas and plotting, but ultimately fails to be written to an identifiable audience or have a consistent tone. Unlike the previous story, that has a positive and defined conclusion, Seeing Redd doesn't wrap up all the outstanding storylines and readers will have to wait for the third book at least to see what happens between Redd and Alyss. Older readers of fantasy who have some knowledge of Lewis Carroll's work may find some enjoyment in these books, but they are not for readers who are uncomfortable with excessive violence. Those who like these books may want to look into Garth Nix's Keys to the Kingdom series and Shannon Hale's Goose Girl and Enna Burning.
Happy Reading! Shanshad ^_^

Message in a Bottle ReviewMessage in a Bottle is one incredible book. The plot of the story is whimsical and will have you dreaming that maybe someday you'll find a love as strong as these two characters in this novel.
Basically this is one sad book, and the people who rate it low, are only doing so because this book doesn't have a cheerful "happily ever after" ending. While I read the book, especially the end, tears slowly streamed down my face as I tried to understand why the story went the way it did. The fact that Garrett was able to love his wife with so much emotion, just shakes you to the core because it comes to the point of obession.
Message in a Bottle is a story about a woman named Theresa Osborne, a newspaper columnist, who finds a bottle washed up shore one day. She proceeds to read the letter inside and there a history of unforgotten love unfolds. Garrett Blake, trying to cope with the lose of his deceased wife, Catherine, writes letters to her and send them out to sea, hoping that one day they'll reach Europe.
As the story progresses, Theresa finds Garrett and they give into the emotions that are growing between them and fall in love with each other. But Garrett isn't ready to let go of his deceased wife yet, so the problem is introduced... read the story and you'll be crying but still happy at the same time.
This book teaches us about the aspect of love and how it's possible to love once more even though you think that you'll never be able to love again. And the fact that love is solid, and so much stronger than simple lust. Recommended.Message in a Bottle Overview

Luna ReviewThis is a story dealing with a topic not often dealt with in YA fiction - transgender teenagers. Regan is fifteen and her life is dominated by her older brother, Liam (Lia Marie, and later Luna, at night). She has drifted apart from friends her own age because of him, and in order to try and help him she has offered to let him use her room at night, to try on girls' clothes. The only thing she has that's *hers* is her babysitting job for a family she sees as perfect and normal, in sharp contrast to her own, with her drugged-up mother and domineering father.
Regan is a sympathetic character, a girl who tries so hard to be there for her brother when he needs her, but also someone who resents how she has to be everything for him, his sole confidant, and who alternates between feeling sorry for him and for wishing that he could just be normal. She also has her own dilemma, involving an infatuation with a boy at school. "Luna" is Regan's story as much as it is Liam's.
Liam/Luna's story is dealt with effectively as well, with flashbacks of their childhood showing early signs that he really did want to be in a girl's body. The separation of gender and sexuality is also made quite clear, and the idea of constructed gender roles is also dealt with (though not as much as I'd like to have seen it discussed - but the perfect amount for a YA novel). It is by no means a definitive transgendered-teen story but it shouldn't have to be, either - it's merely the story of one girl in a boy's body, trying to break free.
A worthwhile read that will hopefully challenge readers' ideas towards gender and sex while telling a compelling story.Luna Overview

Love: A User's Guide ReviewHave you ever had a crush on a celebrity? How would you feel if the celebrity has a crush on you? That's what happened to Amy, the precocious heroine in this charming love story.
Working for Vogue magazine, Amy spends endless days and nights dressing Euro-trash models. To her disappointment, the job is not as glamorous as she thought it would be. But when she meets Orlando Rock, a famous actor in England, she feels that she has found the jet-set life she has dreamed of. Amy wants to attend movie premieres, cast parties, photo shoots -- in other words, she wants to become a celebrity in her own right. But all Orlando wants is a private life and a relationship with a "normal" woman. Does Amy love Orlando, or is she using him?
This novel vaguely resembles the movie Notting Hill, but the romance in the book is much better. I highly recommend it!Love: A User's Guide Overview

Soul of Fire ReviewAfter an intriguing first book in this trilogy, Sarah Hoyt delivers with the second book, "Soul of Fire."
This book takes place about six months after the events of "Heart of Light." Peter Farewell, the were-dragon we were introduced to in the first book, takes center stage in this book, as he is entrusted with the mission of finding the second jewel (Soul of Fire) and using it to find his friend Nigel, so Nigel can complete their goal of protecting the jewels. While in India fruitlessly searching for Soul of Fire, he encounters Sofie Warington, a young girl trying to escape an arranged marriage. Their adventures together lead Peter to what he seeks... and more.
It's historical fantasy, and it's fun. Hoyt throws in fun comments to add "realism" to her novel, like how Anne Boleyn was beheaded for not disclosing to the English king that she was a were-rabbit. The overall plot is great, and while we know the outcome, you definitely enjoy the story leading up to it.
I take one star off for a plot element she left hanging, though. Throughout the story, it's imperative that Sofie escapes the were-tigers, and so much of the action leads you to think that it's important (like when William and his Indian sepoy spy on the Kingdom of the Tigers). I kept thinking that William's visions were of an upcoming were-tiger attack. However, when the main characters converge on Meerut and William's visions come true, it has nothing to do with the Kingdom of the Tigers. I found myself flipping back and wondering when the were-tigers were going to attack or if there was going to be a big showdown between Peter and the tiger king.
Don't get me wrong, it's still a great book, and if you've been following this series you're going to enjoy it. But I don't know why Hoyt built up to such a big plot element and then just... abandoned it. Other than that, it's totally worth reading.Soul of Fire Overview

This is the perfect.... perfect read for a ride on a plane, train, or while sitting under the hair dryer. Laughing/Snorting/Chortling is not optional. The humor is brisk and the writing sharp, but not mean-spirited.

The House ReviewNo matter what people may think I once was a Danielle Steel junkie. As soon as he newest book reached a bookstore 9this was pre Internet days), I was there grabbing her latest book. And I have suchfond memories of her titles like Season of Passion, The Ring, Crossings, The Promise and most recently Ghost. I also had to watch all of the made for TV movies and then would have to reread the books they were based on again. And then a funny thing happened to this loyal Steel reader. I found that her new books no longer interested me and the ones I did finish was because I decided to stick them out till the end. Recently I did enjoy Steel's book The Ghost and today keephoing that a new book by this author would really grab me. When I read the premise of her latest book, The House, I thought this might be that book which grabbed me and took hold. I ultimately thought that while it was an OK book, it left me yearning for the years when her books really enticed me and made me want to read more of this author's title.
Sarah is a 38 year old estate attorney trapped in a four year realtionbship with a man who only sees her on the weekends. And Sarah seems to be content with the way things are, afraid face facts and be alone.
When her very elderly and extremely wealthy client dies, Sarah feels as if she has lost a grandfather. She wonders why he spent his life amassing a fortune and living in an attic room of his huge San Francisco home. Then while dispersing his very
sizable estate among 19 relatives whome he hardly knew during his life, Sarah receives an inheritance she never expected with along with a letter which encourages her to do something which the money which will provide her with a happy and meaningful life. He reflects that while he never had a family or friends and spend his time and energies amassing his fortune, life should be lived to the fullest surrounded by love.
In a bold and unusal move Satah decides to use the money to purchase and bring his home back to the glory days it once knew. And while she is in the process of renovating her home, Sarah learns more about the family whom originally occuppied the home, a family secret concerning her grandmother but most of all, about unconditional love.
Set in both San Francisco and the chateaus of the Loire Valley, Steel does a find jobe of capturing the essence of both areas. But she glosses over the history of the home and the original inhabitants preferring to tie up the book with the inevitable happy ending for the principal characters.
I read this book while on a plane hoping it would provide me with that AHHHH moment but in the end it was a title I most likely won't ever recommend to a person that wants to begin reading Danielle Steel's books. Now, I think the time has come for me to remember this authors older books and pass on reading her new titles.

Razor Burn: A Romentics Novel ReviewThis book is a great read! A sweet love story with an absorbing plot line twist! Personally, I enjoyed the whole book but what I really want to highlight is that the storyline is superb. I am amazed the authors were able to pull it off without the story seeming too silly. The only criticism I have is that I would have appreciated a bit more development in the main characters' relationship. Maybe less sex and more tender moments. But then I am a female and therefore probably not the target audience for this book. lol. Don't get me wrong the characters love is believeable and enjoyable. Yet, probably because of the need to develop the strong plot, the relationship developed pretty quickly. Nevertheless, as a female who has read many romance novels, I have to say this book was refreshing and satisfying. I suggest that all those who are open to this subject, check this book out!Razor Burn: A Romentics Novel Overview

Bed ReviewAfter reading this book I felt like I wanted to be really nice to people. Tao Lin writes in a way that is descriptive but doesn't place any significance or emphasis on anything. He writes about lonely and depressed people who have been rejected from society which normal people would add drama to to make their story seem "heartwrenching" but Lin instead treats loneliness and isolation as "everyday facts of life" just as how it is a commonly accepted fact that there are some people born with brown hair and some born with blonde or black. Lin's dismissal of topical issues and distinctions makes BED a very detached and existentially consoling book for anyone to relate to. save the dolphins.Bed Overview

Stay With Me ReviewStay With Me is a highly complex and rewarding young adult novel. It tells of a year in the life of sixteen-year-old Leila Abranel, a New York City high school student with a rather unconventional family. Leila begins her story indirectly, recounting her occasional meetings with her sisters' mother. Leila has two much older half-sisters, from her father's doomed first marriage. Leila admires her vibrant and quirky sister Rebecca, and turns to her for advice, while respecting her more formal sister Clare's preference to remain distant. The family has a balance, if an unusual one, right up until Rebecca commits suicide.
After Rebecca's clearly premediatated suicide, everything changes for Leila. Her parents take a one-year job helping to create a new teaching hospital in Poland. Leila moves in with her sister Clare, and has Raphael, a distant cousin (and former boyfriend of Clare's), as a secondary guardian. Leila goes on with her life - school, a part-time job, finally getting to know Clare - but struggles to understand Rebecca's suicide. She latches on to her last sighting of Rebecca, and tries to find the person that Rebecca was with at the time, thinking that he might have some insight for her.
This book is about so many different things. Stay With Me is about what it means to be a family. (Raphael, despite his relatively distant family connection, helps Leila with her homework, gives her advice, and takes on a near-parental role.) Stay With Me is about trusting your own body (and yourself), and knowing what you are and are not ready for sexually. Stay With Me is about why someone with most of her life ahead of her would commit suicide, and the devastating impact of a suicide on the people left behind. Stay With Me is about what it's like to be dyslexic (Leila is dyslexic), and how it can affect a person's entire way of thinking.
And yes, as you are sure to read in other reviews, Stay With Me is about teen-aged Leila's friendship with and sexual interest in a 31-year-old man, Eamon. What I found remarkable about this entire storyline was how normal Freymann-Weyr made it seem, and how NOT creepy the plot-line was. I want to be sure to get this across to you, because I was initially hesitant to read the book, knowing about this Lolita-esque theme. Leila's relationship with Eamon is an important part of the book, but it's only a part of a much more fully realized story, and it's handled exceedingly well.
I found Stay With Me to be very well-written. The characters, especially Leila, are complex and realistic. Leila's voice is particularly engaging. Her dyslexia shapes her perceptions of herself, her ability to make decisions, and her day-to-day life, with a pervasiveness that I hadn't anticipated or understood before reading this book. Somehow Freymann-Weyr conveys this without ever making Leila someone to be pitied or ridiculed over her learning disability. It's a remarkable achievement.
I think that high school readers will enjoy this book, especially those with learning disabilities or unconventional families (and what family seems normal, when you're in high school?). And I think that teens who are (horrifyingly) curious about suicide will find in this book a subtle, but strong, anti-suicide message. I believe in general that parents should read as many of the books that their kids read as possible. But I especially believe that parents should read Stay With Me with their kids. There are many great discussion points in the book.
As you can tell, I liked this book a lot. The plot is multi-layered without being confusing, with a nice blend of poignancy, humor, tension. I read it in a single day, not so much because I needed to know what happened, as because I wanted to spend more time with Leila, and make sure that she was alright. But I won't tell you the answer to that. You'll have to read Stay With Me yourself.
