The Innocent ReviewHarlan Coben is a total master of his craft. In "The Innocent" Coben weaves a very complex plot, populates with believable characters and, at the end, leaves you disappointed that the book has drawn to a close. You want more. More of Matt Hunter, who accidentally killed someone in a college brawl. More of Loren Muse, the intelligent, conflicted investigator who thinks Hunter is involved with current murders. More of Olivia Hunter, Matt's pregnant wife who wants nothing more than an ordinary life. And more of all the characters Coben creates.
He is that good.
The story is not simple. Coben's plotting reminds me of a gnarly tree: it starts at the bottom with a trunk and than branches off with some of the branches intertwining with others. Stories and characters overlap, but not to point of confusion.
Coben is a master. In "The Innocent," he has written a superb mystery thriller. Ordinary people thrown into extraordinary circumstances and doing what they must to survive --- if the bad folks don't kill them first.
Superb.

Judas Horse: An FBI Special Agent Ana Grey Mystery ReviewDaring, resourceful FBI Agent Ana Grey has been in some pretty tough scrapes (North of Montana, Good Killer). However, the situation she's in with her latest adventure is more than a scrape - it's a wound that could prove fatal.
Still emotionally fragile following a shooting incident Ana has been through what is called "critical incident training, psychoanalyzing with other agents who have been through a life-changing trauma," and is deemed ready to return to duty. But she hardly has time to fall into step again when fellow agent Steve Crawford is blown to pieces while undercover investigating FAN (Free Animals Now).
Solution? Send in Ana. First she undergoes rigorous (an understatement) training at the FBI's undercover school from which she will eventually emerge as Darcy DeGuzman, a feisty, broke animal lover in a sixties leather jacket that "looks like Jackie Kennedy on the skids."
Her task is to infiltrate FAN, a cover for a terrorist group based in Oregon led by an unstable megalomaniac, Julius Emerson Phelps. She first hooks up with Megan Tewsbury whom she considers to be a warm hearted woman who will be her entree into the group. She's right - partially. Megan is an alias for a former Berkeley professor driven out and into the arms of Julius who is actually former FBI agent Dick Stone. Living with them on an isolated farm are Sara, a waif-like runaway and Slammer, an addicted miscreant. All are looking forward to what Stone calls "the Big One."
Actually, penetrating the group was the easy part for Ana because she soon discovers that Stone knows far too much. She is sure that someone, perhaps even a powerful figure at the Bureau is feeding him information. Who can she trust, if anyone? Perhaps more importantly who will protect her?
April Smith's dialogue is sharp, cutting like a knife as the story builds to its inexorable conclusion. Judas Horse is not only an action packed thriller but an imagined story so plausible, so current that it could be tomorrow's bold headline.

Final Truth: A Novel of Suspense ReviewI like books like this, full of twists and turns and a page turner besides. As with the other books by Stewart, her character development is without peer. I am certainly not going to go into a plot review with this review as that has already been done here. I will say though that for a throughly enjoyable read for those that enjoy this particular genre, you cannot go wrong with this one. This is a simple read though, one that is good for a couple of nights on the weekend. This too is a plus for me. Recommend this one highly.Final Truth: A Novel of Suspense Overview

Trust Me ReviewI am not a regular reader of crime/thrillers in the commercial fiction genre, but have recently been reading a number of them. As with most others, if you aren't used to reading much purely commercial fiction, it is surprising how poor the writing is. Occasionally one can tell that the author sat and pondered the possibilities, and carefully chose his words, but not often. The language is just too common; street language, basically, which I suppose largely defines the difference between literary and commercial fiction. It's like reading a TV cop show. (Why didn't the editor encourage Abbott not to begin two sentences in a row with "but"?)
The first two reviewers don't seem to have paid attention to the book. Luke isn't a low-life, nor is he a "lonely braggart" by any means. He is duped by his stepfather and drawn into a real mess, which then has this psychology student fighting off terrorists like a pro in order to save himself and a woman he has become attached to, and to clear up some mysteries from his own past.
Like watching a TV show with a similar plot, one can get hooked and want to continue to find out what happens, but as another reviewer mentioned, the plot will induce a lot of "oh, right" comments from readers, with unreal and unbelievable occurrences left and right. Abbott tries to sound like a well-researched writer with book recommendations for readers interested in terrorism, but make no mistake: this is not a book that presents a real-life picture of global terrorism, nor is it filled with details that hint at a researched effort, unless you consider name-dropping a pistol ("Glock 9") or the US State Department ("State") to count. Abbott's terrorists don't behave with much professionalism or secrecy, and come off rather as a bunch of unorganized goons.
I read the book, but wish I had audio-booked it as a jogging companion instead.

The Good Guy ReviewFirst off, there is nothing supernatural in this book. That deserves to said up front, as some people prefer Koontz when he is writing in a different vein.
This was one of the most riveting suspense novels I've read lately. The basic dilemna? A guy walks into a bar and is mistaken for a hired killer. He tries to pay off the REAL killer and, for a time, it seems as if this will work. But the killer catches on and the chase is on, as "the good guy" tries to save a beautiful woman from death.
To add to the intrigue, she has no idea why anyone would want her killed. Neither does he, of course. So they have to keep running from a guy who seems to be almost psychic, a man with connections that run deeper than could ever be expected.
I loved the way each character practically jumped off the page, the interaction between them and more. The subtle details Koontz adds are what separates him from other, less skilled writers. His writing is also tight, tense and neither stereotypical or too dense. Take this one with you this summer or have it on hand for times when you want a good read. You won't be disappointed!

The Memory Collector (Jo Beckett) ReviewYou are either going to love this novel or not like it at all. Meg Gardiner writes in a style that is very fast paced, based on an exciting premise and provides a thrill ride type journey. If being on the edge of your seat due to the action of a novel is enough for you then you will love this book THE MEMORY COLLECTOR.
Sadly, if you like your thrillers to contain deep psychological profiles of the characters then this book will not be for you. From main character forensic psychiatrist Jo Becket to the other major characters and the minor ones as well we only get to know them a little bit. They all have a purpose and a standard background but there is very little depth to them. They are needed to carry the story and that they do very well.
Actually this novel is what one would call a perfect BEACH READ. It is an exciting page turner that demands not much concentration from the reader. The author does leave you guessing and the ending is satisfying but I can't help but wonder what Meg Gardiner would come up with if she concentrated on psychological development of her characters. She handles the plot aspect skillfully. If she could add the same quality to the characters she would raise her standards to another level. But I do recommend this novel if a plot driven book is what you are looking for.The Memory Collector (Jo Beckett) Overview

The Third Secret ReviewSteve Berry's "The Third Secret" is a blending together of religious fact with fiction to create a creditable thriller based upon doctrines set forth by the Vatican.
An appariton of the Virgin Mary observed by 3 peasant children in 1917 Fatima, Portugal and the disclosures made by her form the crux of the plot of the novel. The Virgin purportedly revealed 3 secrets, two of which were revealed by one of the children named Lucia. The third secret, however remained concealed within the walls of the Vatican only observed by papal eyes until its revelation in the year 2000.
Father Colin Michener, papal secretary to present pope Clement XV has served the former Cardinal of Cologne faithfully for years. They forged a father son relationship and Michener was concerned by the popes behavior. Pope Clement had been spending an inordinate amount of time in the Riserva, a Vatican library whose contents were reserved for papal use only. Clement was a progressive pope altering rather than sticking to the old doctrines of the Vatican.
Vatican Secretary of State Italian Cardinal Valendrea was at odds with Pope Clement. Having narrowly lost the papacy in the last conclave, Valendrea with lofty aspirations to become pope, favored a return to the princples of the past. Valendrea was a corrupt man using eavesdropping devices he had installed in the Vatican to keep members of the college of cardinals in line.
Pope Clement became aware that the third secret of Fatima stored in the Reserva seemed incomplete. He recruited Father Michener to discover the missing segment of the secret by travelling to Romania to speak with a Father Tibor, the original translator of the account of the peasant girl Lucia.
Berry leads us on a trail of adventure and intrigue as on one hand the true meaning of the secret is trying to be revealed. At the same time forces lead by the conservative Cardinal Valendrea are attempting to suppress its contents. The plot is at times uneven but the religious history, when woven into the story is fascinating. The Third Secret Overview

Prodigal Son (Dean Koontz's Frankenstein, Book 1) ReviewThis novel brings a classic legend up to date by replacing Victor Frankenstein's previously crude monster creation techniques with biotech engineering, cloning, and computer programming. Victor has learned the secret of long life and is still alive and well in 21st century New Orleans. Now a respected scientist and wealthy member of high society by day, Victor practices his high-tech life creation projects by night in order to create perfect beings, totally obedient to his will. He seeds his creations throughout the city so that they can undermine, and eventually replace, humanity and lead to a perfect New Age society. In the meanwhile, Frankenstein's original monster, now called Deucalion, is also gifted with immortality. He learns of his creator's existence and sets off for New Orleans to seek revenge. When a series of gruesome murders occur where body parts are removed from the victims, two police detectives try to track down the killer. Is one of Frankenstein's creations to blame?
The portrayal of Frankenstein's creatures is especially interesting. Created with a carefully controlled blend of human emotion and programmed behavior, they are at times confused about their feelings. Sometimes their human component fights against their artificial one, with interesting results. In a clever turnabout, Victor Frankenstein is portrayed as a monster and Deucalion has evolved to show more human traits than his creator. At first I was amused by the fact that immortality has become a popular pursuit, and that others in the story besides Frankenstein and his creations are capable of prolonged lives and physical perfection. Yet the real-world popularity of plastic surgery, nutritional supplements, and health clubs does prove that art imitates life.
Koontz originally wrote this story as a two-hour script for a television series pilot for the USA Network. When the producer requested major changes, Koontz pulled out of the project and decided to rewrite the story in book form in order to preserve the original concept. This book is only the first in a series of novels about Frankenstein and his progeny. Although I was expecting the story to have a few loose ends to pave the way for the next in the series, the ending could have been a bit less abrupt. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the story and am eagerly awaiting the next in the series.

The Betrayal Game ReviewAs someone who avoids the "spy thriller" genre, I took a leap of faith when I picked up The Betrayal Game at the library. About page 9, I realized what a fantastic leap I had taken. The Betrayal Game is labeled a work of suspense, but it's historic and political complexities, along with an unforgettable cast of characters, propel The Betrayal Game beyond the pigeonhole of a simple "suspense" novel and into a truly brilliant work of American fiction.
David Robbins effortless weaving of fact and fiction entices the reader to seek out the Annotations he so brilliantly includes at the novels end. (Note: Don't read Annotations II before finishing the book!) The characters--of which Cuba herself is as central and complex as any human--are rich with emotion and complexity. Though never quite sure of their motivations and true loyalties, each is sympathetic and brilliantly constructed.
With America on the brink of invading Cuba, CIA agent Bud Calender--a man consumed with his own role in history--enters the life of Brown professor, prominent historian, and expert on assassinations Mikhal Lammeck. Lammeck, in Cuba to witness history firsthand, is thrust headfirst into the worlds of the Cuban underground, American Mafia, Cuban secret police, and the CIA; all of whom are determined to see Fidel Castro dead.
From sometimes comical CIA assassination plots--to a young Marine sharpshooter destined for a history of his own--The Betrayal Game will leave you breathless and wondering "what if?"

The Secret Keeper ReviewFreetown, Sierra Leone is a haunted place for Danny Kellerman. He was sent to Freetown as a war correspondent in 2000--during the civil war--and it was the defining moment of his life, both professionally and personally. He met and fell in love with an American woman, Maria Tirado, who operated an orphanage for child soldiers, and realized a professional dream.
It is four years later and Danny is back in London. He lives with his current girlfriend, but his life has slipped into one of self-pity and loss. His job is unfulfilling and his personal relationships, specifically the relationship with his girlfriend and father are breaking down into sullen desperation. Danny is a haunted man. His past haunts him. Freetown haunts him, as does the loss of Maria.
Then one morning Danny receives a handwritten note from Maria. She is in trouble and asks Danny for help. She asks him to come to Freetown. He is stunned. It has been four years since they have spoken, now this. He decides to call her, but when he begins the search for a telephone number he finds an article about her death. She was murdered in Freetown three days earlier.
This plea for help prods Danny into action. He convinces his editor to send him to Sierra Leone to do a piece on the recovery of the nation after its civil war, but what he really wants is to investigate Maria's murder. When he returns to Freetown he finds the place nearly unrecognizable. The two sides of the civil war share power, and while the economy is thriving, the past is a cloying danger no one wants to revisit, and there is a simmering anger and fear in the city. And no one, on either side, wants to investigate Maria's murder: what's done is done.
THE SECRET KEEPER is a literary thriller that is stunning in its simplicity and power. The story is haunting and melancholy. It is told in two separate time lines. The first is in the year 2004 and it chronicles Danny's search for answers to Maria's death, and the second is his original trip to Sierra Leone in 2000 as a newspaper war correspondent.
The story and prose is saturated with regret and darkness. There is an overriding sense of fear and loss. Danny is a man who has defined himself by one moment of weakness--a weakness that did not seem like weakness when it occurred, but over the months and years that followed it has dragged Danny down with self-pity and, to a lesser extent, shame.
Freetown is captured perfectly as a city re-inventing itself on the ashes of its past. Its inhabitants know the past, but they do not discuss or want to remember it. The only thing worthy of contemplation is the future and the past will only harm that future. Danny is a remnant of Freetown's darkest moments and his investigation represents a very real threat to the leadership of Sierra Leone. An issue that will threaten both Danny and the few friends he has in Freetown.
THE SECRET KEEPER is a terrific novel. It is very much comparable to the work of Graham Greene, both in its thematic style and plot, but it is also a unique piece of fiction that captures the spirit and challenge of both Sierra Leone and the African continent--nothing is simple, the culture, the people, or the place. It is haunting, beautiful and ugly all at once. In a sense it is a snapshot of all humanity and the complexities that are inherent to modern civilization.

The Alibi Man ReviewTami Hoag has revisited one of my favorite characters, Elena Estes, from DARK HORSE. I liked her gutsy in your face style, and her total committment to justice. Her integrety and solid true blue personality are and were captivating to me. This is one of the best books I have read in quite a while.
Elena Estes lives in the guest house of one of her friends who owns a stable and horses in Palm Springs. She lives on disability from the Sheriff's Dept because she was dragged under a pick-up truck while on a bust. She had jumped the gun and one of her friends and co-workers was killed. The bust had gone terribly wrong. If you read DARK HORSE you already know this. Elena has lost much, her job, her friends and her peace of mind. She has slowly healed her body but her guilt never leaves her mind.
Elena is exercising one of the horses belonging to her friend when she discovers the body of the other groom from her stable. Irina has been missing for two days and her body is found floating in a canal; as Elena and Detective Landrey watch an alligator attacks the corpse.
Landrey has allowed himself to fall in love with Elena and with her cynical outlook she has pushed him away. As he works on the case he finds she is a very valuable silent partner.
The story is graphic, with grab you by the throat action and dialogue. A group of wealthy men are the last to see Irina alive. They believe they are entitled to anything they want and no one has a right to question them. They are all wealthy socalite men from the highest ranks of the polo playing crowd. If one needs an alibi they need only call.
The tension is tight and when the steel of justice meets the injustice of patronage and favoritisim Palm Springs will take notice.
This was a stunner and I had no clue who did it until the end of the book. Which clearly showed the importance of wealth and station compared to an everyday average person. Do not miss it. It could have been torn from the headlines today.
The Alibi Man OverviewShe was a vision. She was a siren. She was a nightmare. She was dead. Now he needed her to disappear. And he knew just how to make it happen. The Palm Beach elite go to great lengths to protect their own-and their own no longer includes Elena Estes. Once upon a time a child of wealth and privilege, Elena turned her back on that life. Betrayed and disillusioned by those closest to her, she chose the life of an undercover cop, the hunt for justice her own personal passion. Then a tragic, haunting mistake ended her career. Now Elena exists on the fringes of her old life, training horses for a living. But a shocking event is about to draw her back into the painful vortex she's fought so hard to leave behind. First she finds the body-a young woman used, murdered, and dumped in a canal. Not just a victim, but a friend. As Elena delves into her dead friend's secret life, she discovers ties not only to the Russian mob but also to a group of powerful and wealthy Palm Beach bad boys known for giving each other alibis to cover a multitude of sins. A group that includes a man Elena once knew very well-her former fiancé, Bennett Walker, a man she knows has already escaped justice at least once in his life. Finding her friend's killer will put Elena at odds with her old life, with her new lover, and with herself. But she is determined to reveal the truth-a truth that will shock Palm Beach society to its core, and could very well get her killed. From the Hardcover edition.

Merciless: A Novel of Suspense ReviewMerciless is a cops-chase-serial-killer story with maybe a few-too-many too-closely-related killings. A psychopath is killing women as part of a misguided marketing effort while a creative man of the cloth is showing pedophiles how angels are made.
I don't know that it is as thrilling or chilling as the cover suggests, but it is the epidome of the genre and very finishable.
There are enough potential bad guys and overlapping "clues" that the ultimate baddy isn't painfully obvious. The hero and heroin are neither implausibly good nor impossibly bad. The writing flows on sufficient foreshadowing and allusion with refreshing twisties of wry wit.
I read the 2008 Ballentine Mass Market paperback version and their liberal use of typos is an annoying distraction. The TrueStew we are initially introduced to, turns out to be TrueSew...little things like that dribbled throughout the book...make a little reader go grrr.
Last, the ending was good enought that it didn't make me want to reach out and slap the semi-colons out of the author. I cannot stand a lame ending...and for me to think an ending lame, it must be woefully so.
So...read it.

Long Way Back: A Novel ReviewI absolutely loved Long Way Back. Written in a totally original voice, this story of love, loss and ultimately, redemption, is tender and poignant and thoroughly enjoyable. I could completely relate to the characters. I mean, who hasn't questioned their faith after bad things have happened, or wanted to totally reinvent themselves when the old version just didn't seem to be working out anymore? The Patriots Club ReviewThirty-two year old Thomas Bolden is the hero of "The Patriots Club," Christopher Reich's new thriller. As a youngster, Bolden was always in trouble. He lived in a series of foster homes, and he also spent time in reform school and prison. Somehow, he manages to straighten himself out, and he eventually graduates with honors from Princeton and the Wharton School. After graduation, he gets a job on Wall Street and works his way up to the position of director at a prestigious investment banking firm. Along with his high-paying job, Bolden has a beautiful girlfriend named Jenny whom he adores, and he also mentors high-risk teens in his spare time.
One evening, Bolden's life changes forever when he and his girlfriend are attacked on the streets of Manhattan. Bolden is kidnapped and interrogated, and when he does not answer his abductors' questions satisfactorily, he is nearly killed. Although he manages to escape, Bolden is soon framed for murder, and he is forced to go into hiding. Throughout most of the novel, Bolden survives by his wits as he tries to figure out who is after him and why.
"The Patriots Club" is about influential conspirators who work behind the scenes to manipulate politicians, the economy, and even the Pentagon. Although it starts out entertainingly enough, the story quickly loses any semblance of realism. Bolden has a superhuman ability to elude capture, even though both the criminals and the cops are on his tail. The characters are one-dimensional, and the villains are so evil that they hardly seem human. Much of the dialogue is forced and the four-hundred page book is padded with too many extraneous characters and events. In addition, "The Patriots Club" is so complicated that the reader needs a scorecard to keep track of its myriad twists and turns. A good conspiracy thriller can be fun if it is written in a crisp and clear style, with well-developed characters and an intelligent story line. Sadly, "The Patriots Club" doesn't fulfill its promise. The Patriots Club Overview

Term Limits ReviewBy my count, Vince Flynn has written six poliical thrillers to date with a seventh due in October, 2005. I have now read all six published works in no particular order. "Term Limits" was, I believe, Flynn's debut work. Having read it last provides, I think, an interesting perspective on Flynn's work.
Five of the six Flynn novels feature Mitch Rapp, a very skillful assasin. "Term Limits" doesn't have Mitch Rapp, but it does feature many of the characters found in his later novels.
Straight out of the box, Flynn gives a unique voice to the political thriller. In his Washington, the politicians are generally loathsome, self-serving creatures lacking basic integrity, morality and values. All they live for are their greed and swaggering egos.
The book opens with the murder of Senator Fitzgerald, an obese, alcoholic senator intent on projecting his own power even when, as in this case, it leads to the deaths of American solidiers.
Fitzgerald's neck is expertly broken in his home. Within hours two other equally corrupt politicians are murdered. The murderers issue a set of demands calling for the executive and legislative branches to acheive certain political goals. As in all Flynn novels, these goals resonate with ordinary Americans.
The CIA and FBI come into play to solve the crimes. But President Stevens' Chief of Staff and National Security Advisor don't necessarily want the murders solved. In fact, they think more murders would help President Stevens achieve re-election.
Michael O'Rourke, a first-term Congressman from Minnesota has alrady turned down the President's invitation to vote for his overblown, bloated budget. O'Rourke, a decent man, has an idea of who the assasins might be. A former Marine he recognizes the killing techniques as those American Special Forces might use.
Director Stansfield of the CIA and his assistant Irene Kennedy, head of counter terrorism efforts pursue the leads in conjunction with Director Roach of the FBI and Special Agent McMahon. All of these characters live on in Flynn's subsequent novels and I am glad they do.
The suspense is riveting. Is the President involved in the brutal murders of Senator Olson and a "clean polirtics" Representative? Will the White House succeed in its attempts to manipulate public opinion?
Flynn's Washington is a place of distrust, dishonor, duplicity, hypocrisy and murder. He is, in my opinion, the best crafter of political thrillers in the business today, putting Tom Clancy (except for "Red October") to shame.
In "Term Limits," we see Flynn gathering his strength for later efforts. In all the other Flynn novels, the characters literally jump off the page. "Term Limits" has one minor character who doesn't quite have it. The political cynicism of Flynn's subsequent novels are sharply drawn: you can recognize many of the repulsive characters as being modeled on politicians whom we are all too familiar with from the daily news. In "Term Limits" only one politician, the alcoholic, self-interested, hypocritical, immoral Senator whose death opens the book triggers immediate recognition with its real prototype.
The plot is tight. Flynn simply doesn't require that his characters have fortuitous, unbelievable inventions to adcvance the story. His plots are simply exquisite. (One of my particular irritants are authors who use scenes involving food and drink as bridges to let the characters expound. Jack Higgins and Clive Cussler in their latest novels overuse these devices: Flynn simply doesn't need them.)
"Term Limits" is a true page-turner. I intended to spend an hour with it as bedtime reading --- and it kept me glued till dawm. What higher compliment can I pay to Vince Flynn? Oh yes, the same thing happened when I read his other five novels.

Mesquite ReviewMesquite is a exciting, fun read. A friend recommended it to me and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Written in the styles similar to Chuck Palahniuk and Carl Hiaasen, the story is a manic web of odd characters colliding in a stale Nevada casino. The language is fairly vulgar, but if your idea of fun is a trip to Tijuana rather than Disneyland, then you'll enjoy this book. I though it was $15 well spent.Mesquite Overview
