The Post-War Dream ReviewThe book ends with "...a sudden understanding that all things born are fated to move toward their end." That describes life and this book.
I have such mixed feelings about The Post-War Dream. I was glad when I finished because much of the story was so painful to read-and at the same time wished it went on forever. Mitch Cullin is a tremendous storyteller and writer who knows how to choose the right word for the right place. For example, he describes sunrises, sunset and weather in such effective detail that the sun didn't just set¬, it did it with such flare of words.
The painful emotions came from reading about a 1950's 18-year-old guy named Hollis who feels unloved at home so runs away and joins the army. Too quickly he is fighting in the Korean War. We live the fighting, loss, inhumanities and friendships right along with Hollis.
We also learn about the then-unnamed post-traumatic stress syndrome and how it affected Hollis all his life as memories and ghosts that haunted him.
The love Hollis and Debra have for each other is so well told you know this couple and really feel their pain. In their long love story, they believe they'll be together forever, having met when Debra was in high school and Hollis was just out of the army because his severe leg wound.
Throughout the book we are moved forward to the present and then backward to Korea and Hollis' younger days. Long-married Hollis and Debra now live in an Arizona retirement community. Life is good-until Debra is diagnosed with ovarian cancer. For two years she receives both traditional and experimental treatments. As Debra's illness progresses, she asks Hollis, "tell me about us"-and Hollis does, telling most but omitting some.
My only complaint is Cullin writes often with long (60-75) word sentences, albeit well-written and filled with a lot of description, however, my brain often got lost in them.
The story is an emotional rollercoaster, so grab your heart and a box of tissues and give it a good read. Cullin's writing will be a gift to you.
Armchair Interviews agrees. The Post-War Dream Overview

Of All Sad Words (Sheriff Dan Rhodes Mysteries, No. 15) ReviewBlacklin County, Texas is a fairly, quiet place most of the time which is how Sheriff Dan Rhodes likes it. His idea of a citizens' Sheriff's Academy had seemed like a good idea at the time in that it would teach folks about the department and generate some good publicity. Now he is getting flack over it from some, most notably county judge Jack Parry. Parry is convinced that some who went through the academy recently are vigilantes. There is more to his complaint but it boils down to the universal idea of politics and micromanagement.
Sheriff Dan Rhodes is finally saved from the county judge by a call about a trailer house explosion. The Crawford brothers, who have a bit of a reputation around the area, may have been inside when it blew. There had been accusations that the Crawford's were running a meth lab, something not uncommon these days in the East Texas woods. Rhodes never caught the Crawford's selling anything-not even Amway.
And while one brother has survived the blast, another has not and it quickly becomes clear that it was a murder. A murder that in the minds of some was caused by politics. Murder, that in the eyes of some others was caused by alleged drug dealing. No matter the cause, Sheriff Dan Rhodes intends to find out and isn't gong to let small town politics over a variety of matters stand in his way.
I'm ashamed to admit that this book, which was recommended to me by a friend, is my first Bill Crider novel. It puts me in the mind of the J. W. Jackson series penned by the late and missed Philip R. Craig. True, Sheriff Rhodes doesn't offer any recipes and is clearly not set anywhere near Martha's Vineyard. But, there is that same slow comfortable way of story telling that gradually spins the novel out while detailing the real world characters that live in the Dan Rhodes world. Instead of starting with an abrupt bang, this is the kind of book that slowly begins and allows the reader to get to know the people just a little bit before presenting the problem.
The result is a 265 page read featuring a steady hero who knows his limitations. This is a character, as well as many of the minor characters, that have universal appeal on one hand and are clearly Texan on the other. Dogged in his pursuit of justice Sheriff Dan Rhodes follows a trail with grace under pressure and a reserved calmness most of the time. Along the way, he deals with a variety of events and people from all walks of life who may or may not have his best interests at heart.
And he hooked a new reader.Kevin R. Tipple © 2008Of All Sad Words (Sheriff Dan Rhodes Mysteries, No. 15) Overview

The Mirror Crack'd (Jane Marple Mysteries) ReviewThis novel features Miss Marple in her very late years. The world around her is changing. This is one of only two Christie novels where I was able to guess the identity of the murderer. It's a very good murder mystery, but it could have been a better Miss Marple mystery. The best parts of the book are when Miss Marple is on the spot. Unfortunately, I almost began to wonder if Miss Marple would be in this novel at all. She left her house no more than three times and was therefore decidedly shoved into the background. The parts without her were rather dull, dry, and far too abundant. I found myself rushing more to see if I'd solved the mystery correctly rather than out of any sense of real enjoyment. The Mirror Crack'd (Jane Marple Mysteries) Overview

Thank You for All Things (Wal) ReviewSandra Kring is gifted with an ability to create characters that remain in your psyche long after the story is read. Through them you are able to grasp concepts and understand behaviors of those damaged by a harmful past. Lucy, Milo and Tess are no exception to these rules.
Tess, mother of the genius children, Lucy and Milo, was deeply damaged by a father who refused to show affection, concern or consideration of his intelligent, independent daughter. Thus, Tess, discontinues contact with him until he is dying and she is forced to return with her the children and her mother to the small home town she detests. Her intuitive, people smart daughter, Lucy, hopes to uncover secrets and aid in the healing of this dysfunctional family.
Many avenues lead to the road of redemption and Lucy walks them with spunk and determination. She is witty, winsome, wise, and worldly beyond her years. Working like a detective she unearths clues, dissecting the past so that the present can be salved with the help of a new-aged grandmother, a Native American friend, and a cast of unruly characters. The pages seemingly turn themselves as the reader is so engrossed in the discoveries and solutions Lucy renders.
If this is your first time with Sandra Kring you are in for a treat. May I also recommend "The Book of Bright Ideas" and "Carry Me Home." Soon you will be like me.....eagerly anticipating the next novel from this witty and wise writer.Thank You for All Things (Wal) Overview

Ashes to Ashes: A Novel ReviewAshes to Ashes was my first Tami Hoag book, and I couldn't have enjoyed it more. If you are a fan of Jeffery Deaver, James Patterson, Patricia Cornwell, etc., you'll love this book. The plot was excellent, with enough twists and turns to keep me reading until 3am. The identity of the killer was a total surprise to this veteran thriller reader. Once you read it, you'll be hooked on the author's books.Ashes to Ashes: A Novel Overview

The Alibi Man ReviewTami Hoag has revisited one of my favorite characters, Elena Estes, from DARK HORSE. I liked her gutsy in your face style, and her total committment to justice. Her integrety and solid true blue personality are and were captivating to me. This is one of the best books I have read in quite a while.
Elena Estes lives in the guest house of one of her friends who owns a stable and horses in Palm Springs. She lives on disability from the Sheriff's Dept because she was dragged under a pick-up truck while on a bust. She had jumped the gun and one of her friends and co-workers was killed. The bust had gone terribly wrong. If you read DARK HORSE you already know this. Elena has lost much, her job, her friends and her peace of mind. She has slowly healed her body but her guilt never leaves her mind.
Elena is exercising one of the horses belonging to her friend when she discovers the body of the other groom from her stable. Irina has been missing for two days and her body is found floating in a canal; as Elena and Detective Landrey watch an alligator attacks the corpse.
Landrey has allowed himself to fall in love with Elena and with her cynical outlook she has pushed him away. As he works on the case he finds she is a very valuable silent partner.
The story is graphic, with grab you by the throat action and dialogue. A group of wealthy men are the last to see Irina alive. They believe they are entitled to anything they want and no one has a right to question them. They are all wealthy socalite men from the highest ranks of the polo playing crowd. If one needs an alibi they need only call.
The tension is tight and when the steel of justice meets the injustice of patronage and favoritisim Palm Springs will take notice.
This was a stunner and I had no clue who did it until the end of the book. Which clearly showed the importance of wealth and station compared to an everyday average person. Do not miss it. It could have been torn from the headlines today.
The Alibi Man OverviewShe was a vision. She was a siren. She was a nightmare. She was dead. Now he needed her to disappear. And he knew just how to make it happen. The Palm Beach elite go to great lengths to protect their own-and their own no longer includes Elena Estes. Once upon a time a child of wealth and privilege, Elena turned her back on that life. Betrayed and disillusioned by those closest to her, she chose the life of an undercover cop, the hunt for justice her own personal passion. Then a tragic, haunting mistake ended her career. Now Elena exists on the fringes of her old life, training horses for a living. But a shocking event is about to draw her back into the painful vortex she's fought so hard to leave behind. First she finds the body-a young woman used, murdered, and dumped in a canal. Not just a victim, but a friend. As Elena delves into her dead friend's secret life, she discovers ties not only to the Russian mob but also to a group of powerful and wealthy Palm Beach bad boys known for giving each other alibis to cover a multitude of sins. A group that includes a man Elena once knew very well-her former fiancé, Bennett Walker, a man she knows has already escaped justice at least once in his life. Finding her friend's killer will put Elena at odds with her old life, with her new lover, and with herself. But she is determined to reveal the truth-a truth that will shock Palm Beach society to its core, and could very well get her killed. From the Hardcover edition.

Dead Canaries Don't Sing (Reigning Cats & Dogs Mysteries, No. 1) ReviewThis is one of those books that you understand as you're reading it that it's really not very good in some respects but you keep on reading it anyway because it's not so bad, either, and entertaining. But -- the characters are stereotyped, the detective-heroine is not so much spunky as reckless to the point of stupidity (refusing to take seriously the numerous signs that she's making a murderer very unhappy with her), there are some technical errors in the veterinary part (which really are extraneous to the plot anyway), and it's all so improbable.
But -- Baxter is a skillful enough writer that it's a pleasant read -- great for an airplane -- escape reading. The plotting is fairly good, but the series of interviews detective method is improbable and the main character has virtually no reason to get involved in finding the killer. When citizens get involved in murder investigations, I think it works best when there is a plausible reason why (like brother has been falsely accused, that sort of thing).
The plot involves Dr. Jessie Popper, mobile veterinarian (she has a traveling vet clinic), who discovers a body on her way to make a house call on a horse. There's a dead canary beside the body. For reasons that never are clear, Jessie decides to solve the murder and proceeds to do so by presenting herself (using various lies) to anyone she can find who knew the deceased. Her ex-boyfriend is a private investigator, although all he does is try to protect her. There's a fair amount of romance and a couple of very amusing scenes involving the men in Jessie's life.
There's also a lot that should have been edited out, like all the stuff about her landlord neighbor, which never quite works, and the vet visits, which have nothing to do with the plot. Given the way she uses her vet status to lie her way into interviews, Dr. Popper should be worried about losing her license.
I think Baxter has some good writing skills, but this mystery is clearly a first. I hope she will improve over time.Dead Canaries Don't Sing (Reigning Cats & Dogs Mysteries, No. 1) Overview
