Dragon House ReviewJohn Shors continues to establish his reputation as one of this decade's more important writers, an author who understands the art of blending artistic prose with an always surprising depth of knowledge of the cultures he chooses to explore in his fascinating novels - from India in his debut BENEATH A MARBLE SKY, to war time South Pacific in BESIDE A BURNING SEA, and now to Vietnam in this absorbing novel DRAGON HOUSE. There are passages in his works that suggest the gifts of W. Somerset Maugham, Joseph Conrad, Eugene Burdick and William Lederer ('The Ugly American'), and Evelyn Waugh, and yet he maintains his own literary style, mixing observations of physical circumstances with the manner in which the world as he finds it interfaces with his well-sculpted characters.
Shors creates characters about whom we care - Iris Rhodes, a devoted daughter of a Vietnam Vet who grants her dying father's wish to create a haven for the brutally neglected street children in the country where his life and conscience changed in the Vietnam War, and Noah Woods, a severely disabled Iraqi War Vet consumed with anger and guilt who joins Iris in moving to Ho Chi Minh City (ne Saigon) in an attempt to salvage his life. Once the two arrive in Ho Chi Minh City they discover the difficulties that surround their proposed project and it is only though the growing friendship with the people of the city that they are able to make a dent in the struggle for life that surrounds them. Very slowly but with solid technique Shors introduces the various Vietnamese children who will benefit from the project. In taking his time to completely cast his novel he offers in depth details about both pre-war and post-war Vietnam - the customs, the atmosphere, the foods, the smells, the dreams, both tenuous and crushed, that have been with the people of Vietnam since the devastation of the most unpopular war in history. It all works well as Shors accompanies quietly on a journey that makes a solid statement about how each of us can heal from past injuries.
This is a novel that stands well on its own merits, a strong contender for prizes and a position on the bestseller list. But it does more. For those of us who coped with the war in Vietnam firsthand, this book offers fresh insights as we now look back on that time. Shors gives us a solid example of how Vietnam Vets can find succor and growth from an experience that paralyzed many young minds. For that Shors deserves our thanks. But even beyond that, DRAGON HOUSE restores our faith that superb storytelling with the technique of a polished literary mind is still alive and well! Grady Harp, August 09Dragon House Overview

Knight of the Demon Queen ReviewDuring the past few years, Hambly has spent much of her time sending her characters to hell, sometimes figuratively (in her mystery series (Graveyard Dust, et al)) and sometimes literally, as in this series. Decades ago, many characters might have experienced such a journey, but most of them would emerge unscathed, except for the rare one such as Frodo. A more recent trend is to see how much damage, physically, emotionally, and mentally, a character can endure and yet return. While not completely dark as that, the separate travels of Jenny and John are something you would rather stay home and read about rather than experience yourself. The hells include the usual physical difficulties, but also the ones of figuring out who to trust, how to survive in different environments, and having to worry about personal survival, the survival of those that you love, and at the same time worrying about the future of the land that you live in.
I cannot recommend that anyone start the series with this book. Knowledge of what happened before is vital. As it is, since it has been months since the previous book, trying to separate out the various minor characters and determining whether they are important enough to worry about and why, is very difficult.
On the other hand, Hambly brings us, among her hells, a new world, a mix of Blade Runner with the cities of Walter Jon Williams, a place that is not our own, but one that might be one of our own future hells. That piece is very well done.
I hope that Hambly can bring about a conclusion of all this in the next book. Besides the concerns we have for the main characters, the lights are going out across the land, even without this plague of demons. While I do not expect a solution to all the problems facing Jenny and John, some more immediate than others, it would be good to allow them some peace and a chance to regroup.Knight of the Demon Queen Overview

Soul of Fire ReviewAfter an intriguing first book in this trilogy, Sarah Hoyt delivers with the second book, "Soul of Fire."
This book takes place about six months after the events of "Heart of Light." Peter Farewell, the were-dragon we were introduced to in the first book, takes center stage in this book, as he is entrusted with the mission of finding the second jewel (Soul of Fire) and using it to find his friend Nigel, so Nigel can complete their goal of protecting the jewels. While in India fruitlessly searching for Soul of Fire, he encounters Sofie Warington, a young girl trying to escape an arranged marriage. Their adventures together lead Peter to what he seeks... and more.
It's historical fantasy, and it's fun. Hoyt throws in fun comments to add "realism" to her novel, like how Anne Boleyn was beheaded for not disclosing to the English king that she was a were-rabbit. The overall plot is great, and while we know the outcome, you definitely enjoy the story leading up to it.
I take one star off for a plot element she left hanging, though. Throughout the story, it's imperative that Sofie escapes the were-tigers, and so much of the action leads you to think that it's important (like when William and his Indian sepoy spy on the Kingdom of the Tigers). I kept thinking that William's visions were of an upcoming were-tiger attack. However, when the main characters converge on Meerut and William's visions come true, it has nothing to do with the Kingdom of the Tigers. I found myself flipping back and wondering when the were-tigers were going to attack or if there was going to be a big showdown between Peter and the tiger king.
Don't get me wrong, it's still a great book, and if you've been following this series you're going to enjoy it. But I don't know why Hoyt built up to such a big plot element and then just... abandoned it. Other than that, it's totally worth reading.Soul of Fire Overview

Destiny Kills (Myth and Magic, Book 1) ReviewThis book was a pleasant quick read. I've read Keri Arthur's Riley series and I'm a big fan of those. This book just didn't live up to that series.
PROS:
1. There was just enough character and plot development to make this book an enjoyable read. I felt the beginning of the book had a lot of potential and the ideas were good.
2. This was a very light read. While this fact probably leads to my negative points, it is nice to have a light read every once in awhile to clear the brain. However, I wish I'd known to expect this before I started reading as I wasn't looking for such a light read at the time.
CONS:
1. The character plots (especially the romantic element) were resolved too quickly for a series. At the end of this book I was left with no desire to learn more about the main characters. However, if this is a series where we get a different main character each book then I might come back for more. If it's the same characters then I probably won't be back. The one exception is that the book hinted that both the main characters were special/different than most dragons but this was never thoroughly explored. I might come back if this becomes a central theme.
2. Very similar to number one but the plot resolutions were just too easy and quick in general. If not for the sex scenes I'd almost think this book was young adult. There was so much potential and I wish time was taken to explore the characters and cultures in this book. I felt it barely scratched the surface. After reading the Riley series I found this very disappointing.Destiny Kills (Myth and Magic, Book 1) Overview

Heart and Soul ReviewSarah Hoyt's trilogy about an alternate reality world, in which Charlemagne had a flunky steal two magic jewels from an idol in Darkest Africa and gave himself and his descendants magical powers comes to a smashing conclusion in Heart and Soul.
Having retrieved the Heart of Fire and the Soul of Fire, the principals must now return them to the African idol from which they came, and set the world right again.
We meet an unknowing earl, who threw away his priviledged life for love, an evil dragon, an evil tiger, some loyal foxes and a wild trip through the Chinese underworld where justice and mercy are tempered with fine good humor.
And in the end...well, you're just going to have to read the book for the ending.
Sarah Hoyt's writing just gets better with every book.

For Love of Mother-Not (Adventures of Pip and Flinx) ReviewFor Love Of Mother-Not is Flinx's first adventure (chronologically in Flinx's life). Foster goes back in time to Flinx's adoption by Mother Mastiff, his discovery of Pip, the explaination for the source of Flinx's Talent (a shadowy group of scientists monkeying around with human genes to create a "super-human"). As far as Flinx adventures go, this one is right on target. Mother-Not is also a useful history for those wanting to read the entire Flinx series. For Love of Mother-Not (Adventures of Pip and Flinx) Overview

The Popcorn Dragon ReviewThis is one of my three-year-olds favorites! We borrowed it from the library and she liked it so much, we had to buy it. Dexter the dragon learns the consequences of showing off, but also learns what it means to have friends. You'll read this one over and over. The Popcorn Dragon Overview
