State of the Union ReviewI just finished reading the French version and ordered the English version for Father's Day for my dad. I loved this book and wish it was not finished! I highly recommend it. Interestingly the translation of the title into French is : The Secret Charms of Married Life....having nothing to do with the English title.State of the Union Overview

Airman ReviewI love the Artemis Fowl (Artemis Fowl, Book 1) series and Half Moon Investigations by Eoin Colfer, so I was exciting to pick up this book and delve into a story of adventure in the great blue yonder. What I didn't expect was how enraptured I would become by this book, especially after reading the first chapter that made me roll my eyes with its campiness.
Conor Broekhart was born to fly, or more accurately, he was born flying. From his legendary birth in a hot air balloon to his heroic feat saving the princess from a deadly fire by turning a flag into a parachute, Conor has always looked to the skies for inspiration. But when his tutor and king are both killed in a plot to take over the government, Conor spends the next two years in prison, thinking his father has turned his back on him and his beloved princess blames him for her father's death.
After nearly loosing himself in the inhumane conditions of the prison mines, Conor finds escape drawing designs for flying machines on his cell walls. His plans finally take flight ex machina in the form of a balloon that carries him to safety. He must then decide if he will turn his back on those who abandoned him or stand against the evils that threaten the freedom of his nation.
It was like reading The Count of Monte Cristo (Penguin Classics), The Princess Bride: S Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure and an H.G. Wells novel all in one. It had all of the elements of a great adventure novel in a very contemporary writing style. It made me laugh, it broke my heart, and it left me wanting more. I absolutely adore this book and hope that Colfer continues to write adventure novels.
This book is for a slightly older audience than Colfer's usual readers because of its complex themes and sometimes violent overtones, but it is still an appropriate book for advanced middle grade readers, high school students or adventurers of any age.Airman Overview

Leather Maiden ReviewCason Statler is an Iraqi War vet returned home to Camp Rapture, Texas. Before his time in the service -- he signed up for Afghanistan after 9/11 but was shipped to Iraq, go figure! -- Cason was a Pulitzer Prize-nominated journalist, so the local paper is happy to hire the "local boy made good" as a columnist.
Cason is wondering if there'll be anything to write about in such a slow town when he comes across the notes left by his predecessor (best known for her weekly survey of local garden insects) regarding the unsolved disappearance of teenager Caroline Allison.
Meanwhile, Cason struggles with the return to his hometown, among other things: living at home with his parents again in the wake of his more successful brother; a drinking problem that may or may not be out of hand; and being dumped by the girlfriend whose presence helped see him through the war. When Cason's brother's reputation is threatened by blackmailers, the two of them have to work together as a sort of private detective/vigilante team, and Cason learns that his brother has weaknesses too. Including one that connects him to the Allison girl.
Nearing the end of his third decade as a horror and crime fiction author, Joe R. Lansdale (winner of the Edgar Allan Poe Award for The Bottoms, and more Bram Stoker Awards than you can count on one hand) is still topping himself with each new novel, singling himself out with his particular style of down-home noir.
Leather Maiden combines Lansdale's talents for mystery plotting, quirky but realistic characterizations, colloquial dialogue that doesn't resort to dialect, and an intense portrayal of the dark and light of daily life in the rural South that can only come from a native. The result of this is a novel that offers emotional depth and authenticity along with a fun read. I wrote that Lost Echoes, Lansdale's previous novel, was "very likely the best thing he has ever written." Leather Maiden may be even better.Leather Maiden Overview

Irish Born ReviewMy absolute favorite Irish romance. This book is actually three books in one. There are three sisters and each sister has her own story that overlaps into a wonderful and fantastic book. Born in Fire is about Margaret Mary (Maggie) Concannon and Rogan Sweeney. Rogan owns Worldwide Galleries and wants Maggie's astonishing glass creations in his gallery. He sets out to acquire her artistic talent and finds her fiery personality is not something he can forget. Born in Ice is about Brianna (Brie) Concannon and Grayson Thane. Brie runs the local B & B named Blackthorne Cottage. Gray is writing a mystery novel and needs the solitude of Blackthorne to help him finish it. Brie is kind and generous and Gray wants isolation while guarding his lonely past. He finds himself drawn into Brie's family life and realizes that he wants to part of that life too. Born in Shame is Shannon Bodine and Murphy Muldoon's story. Shannon finds out that Maggie and Brie are her half-sisters and comes to Ireland to reluctantly get to know them. Like Gray she is drawn into their family life and soon finds love has been waiting for her in Ireland all along. An extraordinary book by an extraordinary author. I was drawn into the story from the first page. Nora Roberts writes with such humor and description. When I closed my eyes I could picture Maggie's workshop, Blackthorne Cottage, Murphy's farm, O'Malley's pub and the countryside of the village of Kilmihil.Irish Born Overview

Indiana Jones and the Hollow Earth ReviewI really liked this book. It was the first one I read, and, if I could go back and do it again, I would read "Indiana Jones and the Philosopher's Stone" first, becuase I am reading that one now. Unfortunatley I already know what becomes of the leading lady. I was happy to find out that I could still read about Indy, even after I'd seen the movies! It seemed a little out of place, though. Most of his adventures are in warm places, but this one was set in the Artic! Brr!Indiana Jones and the Hollow Earth Overview

For Love of Mother-Not (Adventures of Pip and Flinx) ReviewFor Love Of Mother-Not is Flinx's first adventure (chronologically in Flinx's life). Foster goes back in time to Flinx's adoption by Mother Mastiff, his discovery of Pip, the explaination for the source of Flinx's Talent (a shadowy group of scientists monkeying around with human genes to create a "super-human"). As far as Flinx adventures go, this one is right on target. Mother-Not is also a useful history for those wanting to read the entire Flinx series. For Love of Mother-Not (Adventures of Pip and Flinx) Overview

The Challenger (Phantom Stallion #6) Review(Don't read this review if you don't want to know what happens)!! This is a excellent book! I was thrilled when Sam got to ride the Phantom!!!! I mean it was a little unrealistic, but I enjoyed it. I was very shocked when the cougar attacked Sam! I was glad Sam wasn't upset about hearing that her dad and Brynna are going to get married. It is my third favorite book in the Phantom Stallion series. I would definitley recommend this book to you, so go and read it!!!The Challenger (Phantom Stallion #6) Overview

Second Paradigm ReviewThis is the story of Dr Christopher Nost, mild-mannered astrophysics genius or convicted murderer - you choose. It is also the story of the agents from various timelines attempting to solve a huge time-travel paradox. Their methods, and their intended solutions, themselves interact and add complexity to the tale. This book pulls the reader gently through the different timelines of the story; with this structure, I might have expected it to feel disjointed and awkward, but it didn't. The move from one section to the next does indeed have an element of "but I want to know what happens next" but this is pleasantly outweighed by the feeling of "oh good, I get to read about THIS bit again now"!
The only downside is on the editorial side - expect to see some missing letters, apostrophe errors and the like. However irritating you normally find these, try to ignore them and enjoy the book, because it is seriously worth the effort.
Overall, I loved this book - as I read it, I was torn between wanting to reach the conclusion and wanting it to go on for longer, which is a perfect balance for me. With no unwieldy character description, each character was nonetheless real and alive to me, engaging my interest, sympathy and affection. This book also made me think. On my way through it, I was absorbing the information and working on my own analysis of the situations in the book; I was thinking through the unwritten possibilities, the implications and the past and ongoing stories of both the main characters and the background characters. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the ideas behind it.
Thank you, and I look forward to more from this author.

Private Wars (Queen and Country) ReviewAuthors laboring in the thriller genre have produced an embarrassment of riches lately, with worthwhile books being published on what seems to be a daily basis. PRIVATE WARS by Greg Rucka is this week's entry. Rucka has established his considerable bona fides in a number of media recently, primarily in the comic or sequential art fields. He currently is authoring acclaimed story arcs in WONDER WOMAN and THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN, as well as a limited series entitled THE OMAC PROJECT. Rucka also has his own ongoing graphic novel series QUEEN AND COUNTRY, where the characters in PRIVATE WARS and 2004's A GENTLEMAN'S GAME come from. While QUEEN AND COUNTRY is a favorite around Casa de Hartlaub, it is in the thrillers where Rucka's talent truly shines.
PRIVATE WARS picks up almost immediately where A GENTLEMAN'S GAME left off. Tara Chace, Minder One of Her Majesty's Secret Intelligence Service, is still reeling from the events that took place at the close of A GENTLEMAN'S GAME. Chace abruptly quits the Service after being denied a leave of absence from her post, an occurrence that almost immediately leaves her agency in the lurch when a power struggle in Uzbekistan results in a strategic crisis involving Britain and the United States. Chace is persuaded to return to service in order to extricate the pro-Western heir to power before he is assassinated.
As anyone familiar with A GENTLEMAN'S GAME might expect, there are any number of red herrings, wild cards and duplicitous settings where friend and foe change sides and identities --- if they can be identified at all. Chace has more than her own self-preservation guiding her motives, and to complicate matters her mission constantly...changes. Rucka's ability to keep things racing along while explaining and exploring the subtleties of this complex plot is almost unbelievable. Additionally, about midway through the novel, there is an occurrence that is as suspenseful and exciting as anything I have read or watched this year. Seriously. I can't give any work a higher recommendation than that.
Rucka is at the top of his game, and PRIVATE WARS is the pinnacle of his work to date. This is a thriller not to be missed.

When I Was Older ReviewThe publisher is sorely mistaken, I think, in placing this book in the 9-to-12 children's category; the story will hold at least as much interest for teenagers and their parents and grandparents as for younger readers. The tale is a timely one, full of nuance, and beautifully told. While simple enough to be understood by children, it works on many levels and will more than adequately reward readers of any age. I am 73 and male, and found it perfectly fascinating. When I Was Older Overview
