Confessions of Super Mom ReviewI really enjoyed this book. It was funny, adventurous and definitely original. With all of the same old, same old out there it's great to find something that isn't completely predictable. A good light read that didn't disappoint!Confessions of Super Mom Overview

Bone Song ReviewI just finished reading this book today and it is so good that I had to write this review. The first thing I liked about this novel is the worldbuilding, which reminds me of the Addams Family. There's a similar gothic creepiness and dark humor. Imagine if the whole world were like the Addams Family! This parallel Earth, has perpetually dark skies, multiple sentient species in addition to humans, and "necroflux," which is a form of energy produced by the "dead."
In the story, cop Donal, uncovers a sinister conspiracy which among other things, murders artistic people for their vivid "bone dreams." They also want to deprive non-human sentients of their civil rites, which is reminescent of the X-men series. There are multiple twists and turns, including a major one for Donal. I can hardly wait for the sequal were Donal adjusts to his new "status."Bone Song Overview

End of the World Blues ReviewJon Courtenay Grimwood's "End of the World Blues" is a stylish, often convoluted, post-cyberpunk thriller which will easily remind readers of William Gibson's early "Cyberspace" trilogy. However, Grimwood's depiction of a near future Japan owes more to Haruki Murakami's vision of Japan than Gibson's in its realism (which isn't surprising since Grimwood has, unlike Gibson, resided there). Young British expatriate Kit Noveau must contend with the unexpected demise of his wife and of the bar that she had owned. His only chance at redemption lies in an ex-girlfriend who left a suicide note before vanishing. His only friend is a rather bizarre young Japanese girl, Neku, who believes that she is an aristocrat from Earth's distant future. Together they travel through the urban jungles of Japan and Great Britain in search of the missing keys that will explain who was ultimately responsible for the death of Kit's Japanese wife. Without question, Grimwood is one of Great Britain's best young writers of literary science fiction and fantasy; "End of the World Blues" merely reinforces the ample critical and popular acclaim he's earned on both sides of the Atlantic.End of the World Blues Overview

Soul of Fire ReviewAfter an intriguing first book in this trilogy, Sarah Hoyt delivers with the second book, "Soul of Fire."
This book takes place about six months after the events of "Heart of Light." Peter Farewell, the were-dragon we were introduced to in the first book, takes center stage in this book, as he is entrusted with the mission of finding the second jewel (Soul of Fire) and using it to find his friend Nigel, so Nigel can complete their goal of protecting the jewels. While in India fruitlessly searching for Soul of Fire, he encounters Sofie Warington, a young girl trying to escape an arranged marriage. Their adventures together lead Peter to what he seeks... and more.
It's historical fantasy, and it's fun. Hoyt throws in fun comments to add "realism" to her novel, like how Anne Boleyn was beheaded for not disclosing to the English king that she was a were-rabbit. The overall plot is great, and while we know the outcome, you definitely enjoy the story leading up to it.
I take one star off for a plot element she left hanging, though. Throughout the story, it's imperative that Sofie escapes the were-tigers, and so much of the action leads you to think that it's important (like when William and his Indian sepoy spy on the Kingdom of the Tigers). I kept thinking that William's visions were of an upcoming were-tiger attack. However, when the main characters converge on Meerut and William's visions come true, it has nothing to do with the Kingdom of the Tigers. I found myself flipping back and wondering when the were-tigers were going to attack or if there was going to be a big showdown between Peter and the tiger king.
Don't get me wrong, it's still a great book, and if you've been following this series you're going to enjoy it. But I don't know why Hoyt built up to such a big plot element and then just... abandoned it. Other than that, it's totally worth reading.Soul of Fire Overview

Destiny Kills (Myth and Magic, Book 1) ReviewThis book was a pleasant quick read. I've read Keri Arthur's Riley series and I'm a big fan of those. This book just didn't live up to that series.
PROS:
1. There was just enough character and plot development to make this book an enjoyable read. I felt the beginning of the book had a lot of potential and the ideas were good.
2. This was a very light read. While this fact probably leads to my negative points, it is nice to have a light read every once in awhile to clear the brain. However, I wish I'd known to expect this before I started reading as I wasn't looking for such a light read at the time.
CONS:
1. The character plots (especially the romantic element) were resolved too quickly for a series. At the end of this book I was left with no desire to learn more about the main characters. However, if this is a series where we get a different main character each book then I might come back for more. If it's the same characters then I probably won't be back. The one exception is that the book hinted that both the main characters were special/different than most dragons but this was never thoroughly explored. I might come back if this becomes a central theme.
2. Very similar to number one but the plot resolutions were just too easy and quick in general. If not for the sex scenes I'd almost think this book was young adult. There was so much potential and I wish time was taken to explore the characters and cultures in this book. I felt it barely scratched the surface. After reading the Riley series I found this very disappointing.Destiny Kills (Myth and Magic, Book 1) Overview

Spell Games (Marla Mason, Book 4) ReviewThis installment of the Marla Mason series continues the solid story-telling and writing. However, Kindle readers beware: there are a lot of formatting problems in this, from missing periods to incorrect paragraph breaks to words with spaces between syllables. Hopefully a proofread and corrected version will be forthcoming (and hopefully downloaded to those of us who already purchased it?).Spell Games (Marla Mason, Book 4) Overview

Dead Reign ReviewDead Reign is a unique addition to the Marla Mason series in that, Marla isn't able to protect her city because she has been exiled. This being the case, Rondeau gets his much needed time to shine. Having Walking Death after you can't be a good thing, and Marla has to go to hell, literally, to defeat him. I thought that Pratt's ideas for Death and hell were very interesting. Hell can't really be a fiery pit of despair can it? Well, not in Marla's world. Marla's trip to hell gives us a much needed look into her past, and helps build her into a much stronger protagonist for us readers. It also leaves the plot wide open for upcoming books in the Marlaverse.
Usually, I have a problem when a bunch of characters are added into a story, but in this case all of the players are necessary and each has their own unique flavor. Pratt manages to construct these new sorcerers, and make them shine with their distinctive personalities. Not leaving one to fall flat. A small issue I had with the book was that there was a lot of build up for an epic battle scene between Marla and Death/Rondeau and Death, but we don't see that. I think this was mainly a platform to show growth in all the main characters. I don't think Dead Reign is as GREAT as Poison Sleep was, but it definitely lives up to my expectations for fantastic Urban Fantasy.
If you plan to pick up this series, definitely start from the beginning with Blood Engines (Marla Mason, Book 1) . Each book could honestly stand alone if you really wanted to start with a different one, but you'll miss the little nuisances between the characters and their city of Felport.

Garrett, P.I. (Old Tin Sorrows/ Dread Brass Shadows/ Red Iron Nights) ReviewSince most of Cook's Garrett books are long out of print and very difficult to come by, you might end up having to buy this consolidation to find the individual stories. This book, "Garrett, P.I.," is the 2nd of 3 consolidations (so far). The others are "The Garrett Files" and "Garrett Investigates." This book contains the 2nd three stories in the Garrett series: "Old Tin Sorrows," "Dread Brass Shadows," and "Red Iron Nights." "The Garrett Files" contains the 1st three: "Sweet Silver Blues," "Bitter Gold Hearts," and "Cold Copper Tears." "Garrett Investigates" has the last three so far consolidated: "Deadly Quicksilver Lies," "Petty Pewter Gods," "Faded Steel Heat." The remaining two books ("Angry Lead Skies," and "Whispering Nickel Idols") still appear to be in print on their own. As was the 1st consolidation ("The Garrett Files"), this book is well bound, has good quality paper, and is well cut. As a pure average of my ratings for the three contained stories, I rate this book at a Very Good 4 stars out of 5. My individual reviews follow:
"Old Tin Sorrows:" Excellent 4th in Cook's Garrett Series. If this isn't the best of the whole Garrett series, it's right up there fighting for the slot. For all intents and purposes, there's no Dead Man in this book: it's all Garrett, with some support from Morley and a couple of appearances from Saucerhead and the Dojango triplets. It's got good pacing and keeps you scratching your head trying to figure out what's going on all the way to the end. It's also one of the darkest books in the series. Nasty stuff. But, it explains why Garrett is so fixated on his picture of Eleanor in later books. Excellent, excellent book. I rate it at 5 stars out of 5.
"Dread Brass Shadows:" Very Good 5th in Cook's Garrett Series. Unlike the previous book, this one has a lot more Dead Man in it. Unfortunately, as a counterbalance, the pacing is a bit uneven (nothing horrible, just noticeable). This book also introduces Winger. Alas, Cook's portrayal of her is inconsistent. From scene to scene, she varies from competent to incompetent at specific tasks. For instance, in one scene, she's not all that good at hand-to-hand combat. Yet, in another scene, she defeats someone whom Garrett would be afraid to tackle. Ditto for her tracking ability: at one point, she's essentially blind to what's going on around her. At another, she's picking out people Garrett misses. It's a shame, since she plays such a large part in the book (basically replacing Morley and Saucerhead). Given that, I rate the book at a Very Good 4 stars out of 5.
"Red Iron Nights:" Very Good 6th in Cook's Garrett Series. It's a good book, but the pacing could use some work. Also, Cook introduces several minor plot elements and does very little with them until the end. One of them, having to do with Morley, he doesn't do anything with (like explain it) at all. Regarding recurring motifs in the series, in this book, Cook introduces Chodo's daughter and the Parrot. His introduction of the Parrot is disappointing considering its prevalance in later books (if you don't know to watch for it, you'd miss it entirely). But, still, overall, a very good book. I rate it at 4 stars out of 5.Garrett, P.I. (Old Tin Sorrows/ Dread Brass Shadows/ Red Iron Nights) Overview

Undead and Uneasy (Undead/Queen Betsy) ReviewThis episode of the Betsy the Vampire series (book 6) is all about Betsy. Just Betsy. While the other friends make almost guest appearances, this book shows Betsy's maturing as a Vampire Queen, and how she is coming into her own in the world of vampire diplomacy. This book is different from the other books in the series in this way. Betsy is still charming, funny, annoying, and vain, but she is a force to be reckoned with who is ever under-estimated by others. I agree with another reviewer that the Editorial reviews give away way too much plot, so I am reticent to discuss particular details of the book for fear of even more spoilers. But I liked the book due to its advancement of the overall plot and the underlying message that Betsy is Queen --and no one to mess with.Undead and Uneasy (Undead/Queen Betsy) Overview

Valley Falls ReviewJustin kicks off his writing career with a winner. Now I want to get ahold of his short story works in J. Travis Grundons' collections. This book roped me in and caused me to not sleep one night as I read it from cover to cover. If you enjoy Vampires, Mysteries, or Horror novels pick this up and see for yourself. In the meantime I am organizing a mob to chase down Justin and make him write another book.Valley Falls Overview
