The Futurist: A Novel ReviewThis is a damned entertaining book. Very funny, very well-written characters, a believably-rendered world stageset of airports, boardrooms, hotel rooms, etc. But between out-loud laughs are stretches of air-sick realism that unsettle and disturb, and give the book a kind of chilling subtext that doesn't feel at all like summer fun. The book feels like sincere cultural criticism delivered by a manic, almost soul-less white-collar drudge, the twinges of whose remaining conscience are drowned-out by hysteric laughter.
I downgrade to 4 stars because I don't see why the author resorted to such drastic, almost slapstick juxtapositions: the main character consults Bible churches and the porn industry, for example. His cynicism is evident without such hamfisted hyperbole.
I noticed frequent similarities to David Foster Wallace's fiction, certainly a promising association, but Othmer kept needlessly augmenting an already forceful story, to the point I felt manipulated and disrespected as a reader. I am happy to forgive him these overindulgences, since the book is so fun, but I do feel that he missed the oportunity of writing something truly excellent. So Sexy So Soon: The New Sexualized Childhood and What Parents Can Do to Protect Their Kids ReviewIt doesn't sound to me that one of the previous reviewers, Mr. Males, bothered to read the book. If he had, he would recognize that the main premise is ALL children from a very early age are learning toxic lessons from the media about sex, gender, body image and human relationships that have devastating effects on every aspect of their development. These effects can not be measured solely by statistics.
Anyone who spends time with children knows that the lesson that corporate America teaches them (especially girls) is that self-worth is based on appearance and acquiring material possessions. The main purpose of this constant barrage (children spend more time with the media than with their own parents according to a Kaiser Family Foundation study) of commercialism into every aspect of children's lives is to increase corporate profits. When a culture is more concerned with money than healthy human growth, it is obvious that our children are at risk for a host of physical, cognitive, emotional and social problems.
We are at a crucial time in our history when more than ever we need competent creative problem solvers who can tackle the real issues we face as a nation and as citizens of the world. Levin and Kilbourne, internationally recognized educators, authors and social activists, solidly grounded with scholarship and experience provide us with the guidance we need nurture the healthy development of our children. If you want to read a comprehensive, eloquent and practical book on this extremely important issue, this is the one to buy.

Everything Nice (Bantam Discovery) ReviewFrom the excerpt and initial synopsis, I thought this would be a great book but I was deffinitely dissapointed. That she finds satisfaction teaching young girls was nice but not realizing what she had in her "best friend" and constantly going back to her useless "mentor" was frustrating. Although these six elements seem like common sense, they are woefully underapplied in business communication. The authors state it well--

Cracker Jack Prizes ReviewI love looking through this book, admiring the prizes and reading the history. It's different from Larry White's excellent book in that it offers a little different take on the history and provides more reading. It isn't as good for the collector looking for prices or even looking for specific toys as it doesn't list prices or show the variety of toys as White's book does but it is an excellent picture book. Pictures are large and very clear. I have many of the toys pictured but the pictures are clearer than looking at the real thing, they're great. If your a beginning collector buy White's "Cracker Jack Toys, The Complete Unofficial Guide For Collectors" first but definitely buy Jaramillo's book. It is a beautiful hardcover picture history book every collector should have. The cover is even modeled after an old Cracker Jack prize with a turning wheel.
