Political Science: An Introduction ReviewFirst off, to be honest, I am not sure if the text is biased or not. I do recall a section where he states that the Republican Party is the party for rich white males and the Democrats are the "everyone else" category. He seems to insult both with fervor. As far as content and layout, the book is not great, and is downright confusing at times. The author mixes in gross generalizations and his own opinion into fact and tries to pass it off as such. He makes sarcastic comments such as posted by another reviewer about needing terrorist attacks and such to ignite interest in politics. I mean honestly, who really says things like that? And we should be learning from this guy? No thank you.
The only "good" parts of this book are the tips on writing papers which are actually helpful. Ironic that the best parts of the book are not actually about politics at all.Political Science: An Introduction Overview

Big Russ and Me ReviewEdit:
Tim Russert died unexpectedly on Friday, June 13, 2008. He was beloved by many and respected by many. He was one of the few political reporters that I believe gave us both sides of the story. He always spoke with eloquence and intelligence, and when he spoke, we listened.
"People do not die for us immediately, but remain bathed in a sort of aura of life which bears no relation to true immortality but through which they continue to occupy our thoughts in the same way as when they were alive. It is as though they were traveling abroad." ~Marcel Proust
We all know Tim Russert as the moderator of "Meet the Press", and now we meet Tim Russert, son of Big Russ. Tim Russert tells the story of growing up in Buffalo, and how he grew to be the man he is today has much to do with the father he idolizes. His father is his hero. This is a story of love, family love, religious love, love of sports, love of people and love of life.
Much of this book has to do with the lessons learned at the knee of Big Russ. Big Russ was a hard worker- he loved his family, a wife and four children. Big Russ learned his love of life in the Army. He was in World War II and was badly injured in a plane accident. Big Russ learned valuable lessons that day- he was saved from certain death by another soldier who threw caution to the wind to save his brother soldier. Big Russ is a reticent man who does not talk much about his experiences, as is common with WWII soldiers. It took Tim Russert many years to learn about his dad and about his experiences in the Army. Tim Russert once said the person he most wanted to interview was his own dad!
Tim Russert had an idyllic childhood, but it was not an easy life. He worked hard at school and hard at home. He came from a family who loved him and taught him many lessons. The family was Catholic, and his entire education was completed at Jesuit's schools. Food was a big part of their life. Big Russ worked two jobs to give his family a home, clothing and food on the table. There is an entire chapter talking about the food of the Russert home and the food of Buffalo. The roast beef weck sandwich is one of the famous foods of Buffalo but it is the Buffalo chicken wings that are the best known.
Tim Russert goes on to tell about his life, college, law school, working for Senator Moynihan and Governor Cuomo. He was well liked and as always a very hard worker. His work with these politicians was noted, and he was picked by NBC to work in the news division. He became the news Director of the Washington Bureau, and was later asked to be the moderator of "Meet the Press". He has made "Meet the Press' the most popular Sunday political show on television. He credits his success to Big Russ who told him to be himself, and to always tell the truth, and to ask questions the little guys would ask.
Tim Russert met and married a reporter, Maureen Orth, in 1983, and in 1985 one of the most important days of his life occurred with the birth of his son, Luke. Luke is a much beloved son, and from the stories Tim Russert tells, we know that Luke must idolize his dad much as Tim does Big Russ.
Tim Russert has made a success of his life. He attributes much of his success to his father. Tim Russert can best describe his father with this sentence taken from Gail Godwin's book
"Father Melancholy's Daughter".
"He lived his life by the grace of daily obligations."
This is a book to be read again and again. Full of stories of hope and goodness and love and life. It is a feel good book. A story of the life of one of our best political reporters. I believe that Tim Russert is one of the most respected man in America.
Tim Russert told us that Bruce Springsteen was one of the people he most wanted to interview. He was able to make enough money selling Bruce Springsteen concert tickets to attend college. One of Springsteen's songs:got a song to sing, keep me out of the cold
And I'll meet you further on up the road.
Further on up the road
Further on up the road
Where the way dark and the night is cold
One sunny mornin' we'll rise I know
And I'll meet you further on up the road.

The Eighth Day ReviewIn his mid twenties, Danny Cray cringes at the image of the starving artist as he has chosen to supplement his meager earnings as a sculptor with sleuthing. His latest customer, charismatic and wealthy attorney Jude Belzer hires Danny to do some research into whom and why someone has been attacking the reputation of a client. Danny easily succeeds and in return receives a nice fee.
Jude asks Danny to dig deeper so the part time detective flies to the Vatican to conduct more research as lure of the first class accommodations are too impossible to resist. However, Danny uncovers a lot more than he was supposed to and he now knows the deadly game his benefactor plays. His discovery leads to Belzer sending his thugs to dispose of Danny, who now flees for his life.
When it comes to an action-packed thriller, the writing team of John Case is as sure a bet as fans will find out. The latest tale, THE EIGHTH DAY, never eases off the throttle as readers follow Danny walk deeper into trouble one step at a time. Though this theme of relative innocence deluded by glamour into a deadly scenario is as old as the bible, readers will root for Danny to defeat his much more powerful foe even if it takes unrealistic spins for him to have a slim chance. The case on this book and previous novels by this writing duo (see THE SYNDROME and THE GENESIS CODE) is that the story line always goes at hyperspeed driven by a likable hero in over their head against a clever villain.

Bedside Manners: One Doctor's Reflections on the Oddly Intimate Encounters Between Patient and Healer ReviewBe forewarned-in David Watts' new book, "Bedside Manners", you may encounter yourself. Whether cast in the role of the caring physician, the neurotic patient, an idealistic trainee, husband, or father, the sensitive reader can explore a vicarious experience in the stories of David Watts' newest book in a very honest and often revealing way.
Previously published as a poet, Dr. Watts has produced his first prose work with this collection of stories in "Bedside Manners". By his own admission, this native Texan writes: "[S]ometimes you have to go where the horse wants you to go. My horse apparently wanted prose and wanted it to speak of the struggles of doctors and patients."
Dr. Watts distills his stories from moments in the life of a seasoned physician. Some of these stories from medical school and residency training are filled with idealism and hope. Others stem from the work he has done with terminally ill patients, helping them transition to death-each along a unique path.
These tales in turn are juxtaposed against those of patients who are driven to seek care, attention and solace for factitious medical problems. Dr. Watts deftly examines how patient care can influence those personal relationships that practitioners have with their own families-affects which can heal or reveal emotional scars.

In his writings, Dr. Watts masterfully records the feelings that a patient evokes in him during a medical encounter: "A strange sense of frustration, almost impatience, came over me. I wasn't sure why." He speaks of the guilt that inevitably follows. These are feelings known only to practitioners; few will admit to having them, and thankfully patients remain unaware of them.
I found some of these patient encounters to be humorous, some ironic, others heart-breaking or frustrating, some poignant-but all authentic. As I read through these vignettes I sensed a closeness with Dr. Watts and his patients. His writings will evoke a camaraderie among physician readers-a homecoming of sorts. In the busy world of day to day practice, where the human touch is many times displaced by the endless paperwork of medical charts and insurance claim forms, Dr. Watts has found a way to acknowledge these frustrations and continue to be a compassionate physician.
A doctor to his patients and a voice for his colleagues-for those who struggle with the demands of life, family, and vocation-Dr. Watts is a healer in the truest sense. Reading these stories will change lives. They just might change your life, too.Bedside Manners: One Doctor's Reflections on the Oddly Intimate Encounters Between Patient and Healer Overview

MYSTERIOUS ISLAND (Bantam Classic) ReviewI have not had a chance to talk about any of the books that I have read recently, but I decided that today I would. Recently upon getting my Kindle 2 I downloaded for free a copy of Jules Verne's The Mysterious Island. One of the great things about owning a Kindle is that the second you own it you can download many classics for free and you already have a well stocked library full of classic novels that triumph over some of today's commercial attempts.
I really recommend reading this book. It starts off slowly, and there were times in the middle of the book that I began to get overwhelmed by the complex descriptions that Verne offers about how this band of Civil War escapees manage their life on a strange island. Verne goes into such depth that the reader can actually tell that Verne probably spent many hours in his own contemplation about what he would do if he were stranded on an island. And let me be the first to say that if I were stranded on an island I would want Jules Verne right beside me. His knowledge of the subject went further than you would expect it to and considering that the book was written in the 1870's. The type of information that was possessed by the characters given by Verne surpasses what most people would know today. It wasn't too far after being stranded that the band of men were making pottery, iron and planning to make guns. At one point they even knew to take small whale bones and hunt with them. These are things that are lost in today's world of luxury.
I think the beauty of the story lies in its ability to transport you to this other place and time. As I read the book I felt as if I was back in the 1800's trying to survive and thinking as I read, "what would I do?" It is an excellent book that could be read by young and old alike.MYSTERIOUS ISLAND (Bantam Classic) Overview

Time Lord: Sir Sandford Fleming and the Creation of Standard Time ReviewAny time you ask "What time is it?" or look at your wristwatch or catch a plane, you are in dept to Sir Sandford Fleming. Who? He is just one of those invisible engineers no one has heard of, but his big idea affects all of us every day. Clark Blaise tells his story in _Time Lord: Sir Sandford Fleming and the Creation of Standard Time_ (Pantheon Books).
Fleming was born in Scotland, and immigrated to Canada to do surveying. His jobs got bigger and bigger, and he traveled. When he missed a train in Ireland in 1876 because the schedule read p.m. when it should have read a.m., he wondered why, if there are twenty-four hours in the day do we not number them to twenty-four, but assume people can only count to twelve and have to do it twice? It is amazing that no one had had this particular inspiration before, but it was just a starter. For centuries, the world didn't really have a time standardization problem. There was not enough mobility for people to notice that one town's time was not synchronized with another's. Each town had it's own sundial, or an acting astronomer who would compute the meridian of the sun, calculate noon, and fire a gun or run up a flag when the time came. Solar noon moves about twelve miles westward every minute along the most populated parts of North America. Trains moved fast enough to show that meridians were different at every longitude. This not only meant that if you took the train from Boston to New York, you would have to reset your watch. It meant that train companies had to keep track of unimaginably complicated calculations to keep their trains running on time. Each train company kept its own time based on where it's headquarters were, so that in Buffalo, for instance, there were three official times because three railroads served the city; in St. Louis there were six official times.
The climax of the book, and of Fleming's successful thinking on time standardization, came with a series of international conferences, culminating in the 1884 Prime Meridian Conference in Washington, D.C. Blaise's description of the conference is great fun, with scientists having to act like diplomats, and those French trying to keep from being humiliated by having to accept a prime meridian in any other country. It was eventually a commercial decision, not entirely what Fleming had planned, and certainly not what the French had wanted. Most shipping was done by navigational charts based on Greenwich, and so the nations voted to make that the prime meridian, although the French abstained and four years later defined their mean time as "Paris mean time, retarded by nine minutes, twenty-one seconds;" this put them in exact accord with Greenwich, without having to mention that detested London suburb.
Blaise has done an outstanding job of bringing some deserved light on Fleming. He has also put some pleasant essays in on how standardizing time affects art and literature, but they are certainly digressions in what is an inspiring story of a man with a good idea and how it changed the world.Time Lord: Sir Sandford Fleming and the Creation of Standard Time Overview

Slow Dancing on Price's Pier: A Novel ReviewThea married Jonathan when they were both young, but her heart has always belonged to his brother, Garrett. Jonathan was the safe brother. Garrett was a bit unruly and less predictable. Fifteen years and 1 daughter later, Jonathan ends the marriage by hopping into bed with another woman.
Thea seeks out the person she should be--now that she has her weekends without her daughter, she is free from the covenant of marriage, and now that she has the freedom she gave up so long ago. Thea finds out that she is content with who she is, but there is one problem. She still loves Garrett, and Garrett still loves her. Jonathan and his parents do not give their blessing for this romance. Will Garrett and Thea follow their hearts regardless of his family, Jonathan, and the daughter?
Thea has created quite a love triangle. My normal reaction would be for her to salvage her realtionship with her husband in order to keep from breaking up another family. Lisa Dale pulled at my heartstrings and made me root for Garrett.
The bouncing back and forth between the present and the past annoyed me at first, but I eventually grasped the concept. The newspaper articles about the history and impact of coffee may not have added much to the story, but they were interesting. I enjoyed all the characters. Their personalities and motivations were clearly developed. The plot was excellent. Many other reviewers have deemed this book to be predictable. I disagree. I did not predict the ending correctly. This makes for a great escape!Slow Dancing on Price's Pier: A Novel Overview

The ILLEGAL Spy Novel ReviewIn my professional life i sometimes reviewed as many as a hundred police reports a day. Some were sensational, some were provocative, others were interesting , and some were mundane. It I were to place this novel in the stack, it would end up in the mundane category, which for this offering is particularly annoying since the marketing and packaging suggests were are heading into a threat assessment red zone that will leave us quivering. I am a spy thriller addict. During the past year I have downloaded and read 253 books on my Kindle, and more than a hundred on another reader, and while doing so, i have written two and self-published a way too large work of historical fiction. OF my downloads, this is one of only three i have started and put aside. It is not apoorly written book, and it is not a poor story. However, after reading two hundred fifty others, it had nothing new for me. This is not necessarily true of the average reader. but it is certainly true for me.The ILLEGAL Spy Novel Overview

Help: The Original Human Dilemma ReviewThis is a book that will appeal particularly ro those of us who feel that more than anything else help gives our lives meaning. But as the author (Keiser) puts it in a pessimistic moment, we cry out eagerly as children, "I can help!" and in old age we lament, "I was no help at all." We've probably all reflected and even been troubled that our reasons for helping are often selfish, and our sincere good intentions sometimes fail to help. Keizer somewhat downplays the heroism of help, portraying it as something integral to a healthy humanity, and often most effective in the mundane context of daily life and work. There are chapters examining in every which way the parable of the good Samaritan, the efforts of author Norman Mailer to help a convicted murderer with a literary gift, who tragically went on to kill again shortly after his prison release, the villagers of Le Chambon who hid Jewish refugees during World War II, the gritty nobility of helping professions, etc.
Keiser has a writerly fascination with language and literary curlicues that in another context I might appreciate, but with this subject matter I found myself getting annoyed with his "cleverness." Clearly that's his style but to me it came across a bit like someone enamored of the sound of his own voice.
I had high expectations of this book when I bought it (I can afford to buy a full-price hardcover only extremely rarely). It was worth the money and the time and I would definitely recommend it. It did disappoint me particularly in one way however, which was its much less depth of attention to the problems of receiving help--the orientation is mainly toward being the helper. As a retired clergyman the author clearly identifies as a helper and makes some assumptions that his readers will be materially secure, socially conscious helper types. I fit the latter part of that profile, but as a poor person and a person with a degree of disability I've experienced receiving help as perhaps even more complex and morally and emotionally fraught than helping. I was going to give only 4 stars for this reason, but I've changed my mind in the hopes that Keizer will write a companion volume, "Helped."
The book does include some nice discussion of recognizing the moral agency of the person being helped, and his or her own need to help--I appreciated that, while the emphasis was mostly on helping, the book largely avoids objectifying those being helped, which I think goes hand in hand with not glorifying the heroism of the helper.
In other words, a healthy and organic rather than romanticized concept of help.Help: The Original Human Dilemma Overview

The Unwanted Sound of Everything We Want: A Book About Noise ReviewThis is an excellent, thoughtful meditation on something virtually everyone can agree upon: painful and intrusive noise sucks. The politically aggressive bullying that typifies noise dominance is finally given a good lashing on these pages; which alone is gratifying enough to recommend the book. Stylistically, Garret Keizer sticks with his forte: the clever milieu of highbrow periodical wit. Perhaps the most resonant quality of the book is its ability to make the reader feel less alone in the world. Most of us tend to stoically (by our own estimation) tolerate a great deal of noise in our daily lives, convinced that the risks of confrontation outweigh the uncertain rewards of complaint. We also recognize, even if only by a tacit sense of fair play, that the rights of the noisemaker and the accidental ear overlap in uncomfortable ways. It's a rewarding experience to read through this exhaustive rumination on the subject. Even if it isn't necessarily going to make the world a quieter place, it's a good start.
There are several pages of notes the end of the book, adding substantially to its bulk. An electronic version or the paperback edition would probably be the more economical - and ecologically prudent - choice. The Unwanted Sound of Everything We Want: A Book About Noise Overview

Stillpower: The Inner Source of Athletic Excellence ReviewI do not play sports, but I found the information in this book to be very insightful. I agree with everything that Garret Kramer writes about in this book. Stillpower is a book that will help me produce better results at work. It will also help me to enjoy my job more. I help peopale with developmental disabilities find jobs. Stillpower is the concept that clarity of mind and acting freely will lead to improved performance at any endeavor. One of the things I learned from reading this book is the difference between willpower and stillpower. Willpower involves forced strained effort.Stillpower involves a more freer effort and greater results. Another important concept I learned in this book is external forces will not make increase my level of happiness. I truly believe in developing my inner wisdom to solve problems. I will try to teach my clients to trust their inner wisdom in making decisions. Kramer provides examples of athletes and sports teams who use stillpower to be succesful at what they do. Kramer shares advice that is logical and easy to understand. The best advice in this book is how to make decsions. Decisions are a result of a high state of consciousness and well being. Poor decisions are made because low sense of well being and a state of mind. Kramer also encourages me to enjoy the journey of whatever I am doing and not be overly concerned about the destination. I loved reading about the life of Michigan football player Donnie Warner and baseball legend Jackie Robinson. They are athletes who succeeded. They had successful athletic careers despite physical and societal conditions like racial prejudice. I loved reading about the success of the University of Connecticut women's basketball team in this book too. These individual stories are very inspirational. This adds to the pleasure of the book for me.Stillpower: The Inner Source of Athletic Excellence Overview
