Bright Beginnings, Books 1 and 2, (2 Volume Set) ReviewWe have decided to homeschool our son. We are not fanatics, this is just the best option for our family. That being said, I really wanted my son to have a structured preschool experience. I am so glad that I found this curriculum! I am so impressed! What wonderful ideas Ms. Shaw has put in it! The layout and daily plan has really been thought through. There is just the right amount of content and time spent on each subject for the short attention span of children this age. Each day, there is Bible, a themed topic from God's World (My Birthday, Birds, Communication, Insects, Food, Five Senses, etc) - this topic is continued all week, Language Skills, Physical Education, Math, Art or Music (alternate days), Health, Safety & Manners or Character Building (alternate days), a Memory Verse and snack This truly is a wonderful program for children of the 3-5 age range. My Little House Cookbook (Little House Reader's Collection) ReviewI purchased this book to find recipes to make for my daughters 8th birthday. She had read all the Little House Series and had a "Laura" party. I was very disappointed when the recipe for making butter called for a food proccesor. I was looking for recipes that would illustrate the frontier lifestyle not modern day cooking. They list close to 60 different parachute games, separated by low, medium and high activity levels. They describe the game, often with a picture and then offer some insight of what often happens with the children playing it. In addition to listing any additional equipment necessary (balls or a second chute), they'll talk about the duration of the game, when to play the game, good lead in activities and good follow up activities. They also talk about the developmental skills each game encourages.

Did you ever wonder as you read The Long Cold Winter how Ma made food that sustained them when they nearly starved to death? You'll find it in the Foods From The Barnyard chapter, not that too many of us will eat oxtail pot roast, but here it is.
In Staples From The Country Store you can learn to make Cornmeal Mush, Bean Porridge (along with the famous rhyme) and Corn Dodgers just as Ma did On the Banks of Plum Creek.
Are you wondering what to do with your bountiful garden of fruits and veggies? Turn to chapter 6, Foods from Gardens and Orchards. A wonderous story on Ingalls farming times and selection of recipes like Potato Cakes, Creamed Carrots, Fried Parsnips and Succotash. I was always curious about Ma's Green Tomato Pickles, now I can make them!
