A Girl Named Zippy: Growing Up Small in Mooreland, Indiana ReviewThis book is proof that each of us has plenty of material in our `ordinary' lives to use as material for writing a memoir. What most of us DON'T have, however, if Haven Kimmel's ability to write so well that what was really a very simple small-town childhood can be elevated to a 280-page book that utterly captivates. Kimmel achieves what many others have attempted to do and failed: she writes entirely from the child's voice without losing her audience, without becoming cloying, without making us want to smack her and say `get on with it.' By turns wickedly witty, humorous, poignant, sweet, heart-wrenching, wise, A Girl Named Zippy is simply one of the best books I've read this year, a poem to a happy childhood.
I resisted it for over a year, fearing it was going to be a sappy, feel-good story. Wrong. It's utterly original, utterly uplifting, utterly hilarious, utterly wonderful. Do NOT fail to read this book.A Girl Named Zippy: Growing Up Small in Mooreland, Indiana Overview

The Wedding Officer: A Novel (Bantam Discovery) ReviewRomance can take place anytime, anywhere --- even in the midst of war. The sights, sounds and flavors of the Italian coast, rich with traditions and recipes passed through family members, entice British Captain James Gould to fall in love with Italy and the very beautiful and talented Livia Pertini. A mere 22 years old, Captain Gould is sent to Naples, Italy, to discourage British soldiers from taking war brides from among the many young Italian women who must prostitute themselves for bits of food in order to survive amidst deplorable conditions. The Allied occupation of Italy is portrayed with candor. Black marketeering, venereal disease, prostitution and corruption are rampant, and the new wedding officer is in charge of restoring order.
The Amalfi coast we know today as the Italian Riviera is in shambles, bombed by the Germans, British and Americans as they fight the war. In the midst of the rubble, Captain Gould is taken aback by the view, and the reader is treated to the stunning imagery of "the vast orange sun setting over the bay of Naples...Along the seafront, palm trees nodded in the evening breeze. And on the other side of the bay, the vast bulk of Mount Vesuvius loomed..." Despite the harsh realities of a war-torn country, the reader is transported to a time and place in history that enriches our understanding of the power of culture, food and love.
To begin your summer reading with THE WEDDING OFFICER and a cool limoncello is a must. Whether basking in the warm Mediterranean sun on the Amalfi coast, poolside at a resort hotel or beneath a striped umbrella on any beach, feed your appetite for wine, food and love with this book. Anthony Capella, author of THE FOOD OF LOVE, writes a visual feast laden with romance fed by the beauty of the region, its culinary delights and the warmth of the Italian people.
Livia Pertini has known one love: Enzo a young, handsome Italian officer who finds her in the kitchen of her family's osteria during the Feast of the Apricots and wins her heart with his smile and his open expression of romantic interest. "I wasn't on the lookout for someone, but when you meet the right person, you have to grab the opportunity while you can." The young lovers marry quickly, and Livia moves to Naples with her new husband. After the war takes Enzo's life, Livia is able to find work as a cook to the wedding officer and escapes having to support herself through prostitution.
James's romance with Italy and Livia begin at the same time. Her mouthwatering "eggplant baked in layers with tomato, garlic and herbs and topped with grilled cheese" fettuccine al limone and sliced apricots in wine lure him into the kitchen to sample savory foods that release his palate from the bland meat and vegetable rations. For the wedding officer to fall in love with a beautiful Italian girl is contrary to his role as deterrent of relationships between British soldiers and Italian women. James's passion for Livia begins in the kitchen, and in the middle of a cooking lesson, James and Livia hold each other during an air raid by the Germans, and James asks, "If you died right now, is there anything you would regret?" Food for thought for all of us.
The eruption of Mount Vesuvius adds another dimension of uncertainty, fear and survival. While visiting her father and sister alone, Livia's family is placed in the path of hot lava. To save her father from the infection of severe burns, Livia must sacrifice herself to the town gangster in order to obtain the life-saving penicillin. The lovers are separated, and James requests a transfer to the front line to get closer to Germany, where he thinks Livia has been taken. Over shots of grappa, a kindly Italian advises James to fight for the woman he loves --- "isn't she worth fighting for?" When the lovers are reunited, James has witnessed the ravages of war firsthand in a way that changes a boy to a man.
The reader becomes as intoxicated as James by the sight of "a lemon tree in blossom...or the scent of some unfamiliar, exotic herb wafting through an open window...or snatch of opera being sung...or shaft of Neapolitan sunlight warming the skin." We are seduced by Livia as she dances the tarantella, an erotic dance in which the woman pursues the man, and we can nearly taste the briny oysters the two share in a tiny restaurant overlooking the sea by Sorrento.
I predict a boost in tourism to the Italian Riviera when THE WEDDING OFFICER is served to the public via the big screen. Previous visitors to Naples, Capri or the Amalfi coast will rejoice in remembering all things limone. The dessert is the nectar from the simple, fresh culinary imagery and salty tang of the sea, and the strength of two people who change with each other and grow together instead of apart, despite the effects of war. The promise of moonlit nights, stunning vistas, culinary delights and the infamous limoncella is a recipe for love you'll want to savor and share. Ciao.

Russka ReviewI first picked up Russka, not out of any interest in Russia, but because I'd enjoyed Rutherford's book Sarum and wanted to read more of his books. Russka ended up influencing my life more than any other book I've ever read. Before reading the book I knew nothing about Russia beyond the usual Cold War stereotypes. After reading the book I was so interested that I learned to speak Russian and hope to travel there someday.
In Russka, Rutherford brings history to life in a way his other books (Sarum and London) can't rival. Besides telling a good story with engaging characters, Russka shows how major historical events affected the lives of individuals and how human desires and frailties shaped history. Rutherford doesn't write about "the Bolshevik Revolution" or "Consumer good shortages during the Soviet era", he writes about the ups and downs of individual families living through these events. Russka is first and foremost a story that pulls the reader in. Gaining insight into the Russian mind-set is an unexpected perk.
I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction, regardless of whether they're interested in Russia. However, if after you've finished the book you'd like to learn about post-Communist Russia, I recommend Mark Taplin's nonfictional account Open Lands: Travels Through Russia's Once Forbidden Places.Russka Overview

Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom (Caldecott Honor Book) ReviewThere will never be enough books about Harriet Tubman and the journey she took to free slaves from the South. MOSES: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom by Carole Boston Weatherford brings to light Black history we can neither forget nor allow our children to forget.
The historical story of Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad is classic. The illustrator, Kadir Nelson, enhanced the words and actions that connect you along with the spiritual inspiration that kept Harriet moving, hiding and finally reaching freedom in Philadelphia. God told Harriet this was just the beginning, she was going to go back and free others, which came to pass with the underground railroad that kept the slaves safe while traveling to freedom.
This book is a must for all children to have in their libraries. The book is large in size and bold in color, portraying Harriet as a powerful, yet humble woman doing God's will. MOSES will keep any young child's attention from the beginning to the very last page. I applaud the author and illustrator for letting the journey continue and keeping the light shining so we will always keep our children in touch with Black history and teach them about the people who were instrumental in getting us to where we are today.

The French Betrayal of America ReviewRegarding the book, it is actually far more critical of Chirac, in particular, than of France. The author has a strong opinion regarding the issues he discusses (not that you couldn't guess by the title), but the stories inside are reasonably well documented, and dovetail with accounts published in newspapers at the time (the 80's and 90's, for those of us old and interested enough to remember them). The author writes well, and the book is an easy read.
However, I keep wondering how many of the 1-star critics have actually *read* the book. Their reviews - almost hysterical in nature, with the odd exception - are the kind you would expect from someone who reads the book description, and, believing it opposite to their preconceived US/World view, decides to deflate it by writing a (pseudo) review and rating it 1-star. Instead of ranting against a perceived neocon cabal against France, it would be far better to point - and document - examples of the book's alleged factual errors; it would make the reviews much more useful to future potential buyers - if that is what the reviewers really want, of course...The French Betrayal of America Overview

The Bushes: Portrait of a Dynasty Reviewit is still a worthwhile read. You get some great background info on the Bushes. Love them or hate them, their successes didn't happen in a vaccum. They thoroughly understand that their achievments depend on two things; networking and making enough money to be comfortable while pursuing their political goals. It also demonstrates that while Bush Sr was not a great president he is undervalued as a statesman. Few people walked into the White House with as much experience as George Herbert Walker Bush.

That said I think this book is an especially good read for people trying to understand why Bush Sr's presidency has a different flavor than that of his son Dubya. And for people who aren't familiar with the saga, they will learn that the family pinned their political hopes on Jeb and were astonished when Dubya became Gov of Tex then President.

Even though this book does favor the Bushes there are some things that even they can't paint a pretty picture of. Such as Prescott Srs involvement in Yales Skull and Bones Society's plundering of Geronimos bones and his fumble when he jokingly told his mother during WWI that he won 3 medals of honor from three countries. His mother unwittingly shared that with the press only to have to shamefacedly retract it later.

Another example of where this book paints a less than flattering picture of the Bushes is that it also shows a mean spirited side to Bush Sr in some of his remarks to Barbara about her weight and her cooking. And even Barbara isn't spared. While she is generally portrayed in a positive light you can't help but see that Barbara on occassion employed some "Nancy Reagan-like" tactics when she thought someone wasn't being loyal to the Bush family. And, in immersing herself in the Bush identity she became disengaged from her own family.

In summary this book is a good foundation to understanding the Bushes but you may want to do some "cross reading" from other sources to get a more complete picture of this interesting family. The Bushes: Portrait of a Dynasty Overview

How to Raise an American: 1776 Fun and Easy Tools, Tips, and Activities to Help Your Child Love This Country ReviewIt's important to know where you stand, whose side you're on, and why. In the gathering storm of anti-Western, illiberal and theocratic ideologies asserting themselves in the developing world, our kids will be faced with mounting pressures to give in: to talk politically correct talk, to accommodate medieval fundamentalists, to do business with repressive regimes, to tolerate intolerant people. The decades ahead will test the American spirit as we engage societies that don't share our basic values and understanding of man and his place in the world.
"How to Raise an American" is an indispensable guide to explaining our culture to our kids. The schools won't do it, encumbered as they are by politics, special interests and educrat fads. The media can't do it; they're focused on what's wrong with our society and too often, their self criticism turns into self loathing. Religions don't seem to be helping much, drawing lines of division and dogma in a self-righteousness and insularity that's un-American. The culture does it, in its own way, by promoting individualism, social conscience and the pursuit of happiness, but culture is focused on the new, the innovative, sometimes the weird -- not first principles.
We have to be explicit with our kids. We live in the freest, richest, longest living, most dynamic, most inventive, most diverse society ever built. The 1776 tools, tips and activities in this handbook give parents some great ideas for teaching the history that brought us to this point and the important American values that continue to draw eager immigrants from every nation to our shores. Myrna Blyth and Chriss Winston write in a breathy, accessible style that's easy to read, and the book is a well-organized, carefully-crafted resource. New parents should get started early: "How to Raise an American" provides bullet points for kindergarten through the eight grades. Sullen and rebellious teenagers may not sit still for some of the patriotic exercises, but as the Jesuits say, "Give me a child until he is seven and I will give you the man."
It's easy to be cynical about patriotism, to cast it in merely right wing/left wing terms. But in the history of mankind, America is exceptional, and our children have to know what we believe, why we believe it and how to proudly live as Americans. How to Raise an American: 1776 Fun and Easy Tools, Tips, and Activities to Help Your Child Love This Country Overview

Dialogues: A Novel of Suspense ReviewThis book is a tease - it calls itself a novel of "suspense," but there is no real suspense, and any suspense that there actually is is left unrequited in the end. You go through the entire book waiting to find out why Tory killed her six co-workers. You never find out, and the ending is the biggest cop-out since "Son of Rosemary, The Sequel to Rosemary's Baby". How could the publisher have allowed the author to end this book in that cliched fashion? I felt truly cheated.Dialogues: A Novel of Suspense Overview

A Foxfire Christmas: Appalachian Memories and Traditions ReviewEvery Christmas, I read a book in the month of December about Christmas. This was my choice for 2006, and it really is a wonderful little book. The authors provide us with accounts from Appalachia's older folks who recall the Christmasses of their childhoods. It is almost like listening to them speak as we are told of a more innocent time in America, and the simplicity of their Christmas, which focused on the Lord. We learn about their gifts, which aren't much compared to today, their meals which sound delicious, games they played, church, and social gatherings. Recipes are included, as well. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wishes to incorporate more peace and simplicity into their Christmas season. Merry Christmas!A Foxfire Christmas: Appalachian Memories and Traditions Overview

To Hell on a Fast Horse: Billy the Kid, Pat Garrett, and the Epic Chase to Justice in the Old West ReviewMark Lee Gardner has so thoroughly researched and written this history of William Bonney, Billy the Kid, and his killer, Pat Garrett that many of the myths can now be put to rest. The Legend of Billy the Kid has been romanticized by many movies, books and songs, but now the actual historical facts are on display.
The book is laid out in chronological fashion and the story of Billy the Kid is told side by side with the one man that will be forever tied to him - Pat Garrett, the Sheriff that brought Billy down. The bibliography is well worth the time to peruse it. Much of the data and primary reference material is quoted and commented upon by Gardner, making this section of the book very valuable to anyone that is truly interested in the full historical story.
The writing is very good and easy to follow. Of the 250+ pages, the first 200 are dedicated to the story of Garrett and Billy and their intertwined lives. After Billy is killed by Garrett, the book concentrates on the rest of the life of Pat Garrett. Garrett's life after Billy is not a pretty one and is quite sad to read. Gardner works his material and maybe overwrites this portion a little. As a writer of pure history, Gardner attempts to leave no stone unturned and this is one of the two negatives that I have with the book - just too much detail without the interest of Billy the Kid's involvement. With the title as it is written, this reader expected Billy to be a part of the book until the end.
The second negative is that this book does not give to the reader any of the surrounding events that are ongoing during the time frame of this story. I like to obtain more historical information in the era of the biography to complement the immediate story of the biography's main character(s). In this case there are many individuals that are on display for their part in Billy's and Garrett's lives, but little else is discussed. For this reason, I marked down the rating from 5 to 4 stars.
If you are interested in the true events surrounding Billy the Kid, then this is the book for you.

I Pray Hardest When I'm Being Shot At ReviewI finished I Pray Hardest in one shot last night. Its compelling message of the strength of family bonds and the promise inherent in each new generation has lingered in the back of my mind all day today, reminding me of the love shared within my own family and giving my spirits a gentle boost. Though the writer set out to chronicle his grandfather's amazing life, I was intrigued to see a parallel story-within-the-story develop into a saga of self-realization and fulfillment for the author himself.
