American Priestess: The Extraordinary Story of Anna Spafford and the American Colony in Jerusalem ReviewFor anyone with mid-western ancestors, this phenomenal religious and protestant work ethic mentality makes me ever more curious about my great grandparents and their beliefs and life style. It's simply fascinating. From the Chicago fire, to the strong belief in retuning all Jews to Palestine and converting them to Christianity ---an incredible piece of our past. And so very exciting to discover.
For anyone who was taken by "the devil and the white city", this is a must read!American Priestess: The Extraordinary Story of Anna Spafford and the American Colony in Jerusalem Overview

Conclave: The Politics, Personalities, and Process of the Next Papal Election ReviewAuthor John L. Allen, Jr. is a correspondent for The National Catholic Reporter. He has penned a biography of controversial Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of the Vatican, and has already contracted to cover the future election of the new Pope for Fox News. Many Americans cannot remember the media focus and the world attention that the death of a popular Pope and the election of a new Cardinal to fill "the shoes of the fisherman" draw, since the event has not happened since 1978. Allen gives us a stunning view of the likely scenarios, issues and the potential for transformation that the Catholic Church faces as John Paul II's days as the most powerful leader in the Christian world draw to a close.
From Allen, we get the history of the papacy and the relevance of the way today's church works. He presents issues of bioethics, the church's positions on celibacy and sexuality, the need for church collegiality throughout the world, the need to balance centrist Vatican powers with the role of the world's bishops, and many current Catholic doctrines that will be continued or changed, depending on the election of the new Pope. He presents a dignified and on the mark representation of John XXIII, Paul VI, and John Paul I and II. He is both informative and relevant on the ceremonies that will transpire when the current Pope dies, without leaving any sense of a "lameduck" status for the existing Papacy and Vatican staff.
It's noteworthy that Allen tries to stay neutral on the current stand of the church on the issues, and on his introduction of the conclave participants - the world's cardinals. There is a little liberal and reform bias here, but he is careful to point it out. His choice of 20 of the most prominent or likely candidates is well thought out, and although he is clear that there are many prominent European candidates, the reader learns why the next Pope will not be elected from the USA, and clearly outlines why the 6 Latin American and 2 African Cardinals are serious contenders to lead the Catholic church in the new millennium.
A fascinating frontspiece to one of the world's great dramas, "The Conclave" makes for interesting reading for Catholics and non-Catholics alike.Conclave: The Politics, Personalities, and Process of the Next Papal Election Overview

Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom (Caldecott Honor Book) ReviewThere will never be enough books about Harriet Tubman and the journey she took to free slaves from the South. MOSES: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom by Carole Boston Weatherford brings to light Black history we can neither forget nor allow our children to forget.
The historical story of Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad is classic. The illustrator, Kadir Nelson, enhanced the words and actions that connect you along with the spiritual inspiration that kept Harriet moving, hiding and finally reaching freedom in Philadelphia. God told Harriet this was just the beginning, she was going to go back and free others, which came to pass with the underground railroad that kept the slaves safe while traveling to freedom.
This book is a must for all children to have in their libraries. The book is large in size and bold in color, portraying Harriet as a powerful, yet humble woman doing God's will. MOSES will keep any young child's attention from the beginning to the very last page. I applaud the author and illustrator for letting the journey continue and keeping the light shining so we will always keep our children in touch with Black history and teach them about the people who were instrumental in getting us to where we are today.

Say Yes To No: Using The Power Of No To Create The Best In Life, Work, and Love ReviewGreg Cootsona (http://www.gregcootsona.com) is not only Pastor of Adult Discipleship at Bidwell Presbyterian Church in Chico, CA; he's also a drummer and jazz aficionado. "Jazz improvisation," he writes, "illustrates some keys to a successful life. First of all, say no to chaos: By mastering your instrument and knowing the changes. Say no to overplanning: Life is not fixed. You cannot predict every detail. Relax, stay loose, and take in what life gives. Finally, say yes to improvising a life of spontaneity, creativity, and beauty." One's highest calling is to say yes to God.
That means removing the obstacles, such as submersion in technology or work, that hinder our flourishing. You'll find no better guide than "Say Yes To No: Using the Power of NO to Create the Best in Life, Work, and Love." The book is addressed especially to those who may not have a religious identification but who are spiritually open. It's for those caught up in the quest for wealth, fame, position but who long for a life of integrity.
As a young pastor at Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City, the pressure of work and a series of family challenges began to affect his health. The chest pains, "a racing heart and shortness of breath, my head spinning with unfinished tasks at home and at work," led him, at age 38, into a doctor's care. That was in March 2001. Not many months later the church became a haven in the aftermath of 9/11. He realized the higher priorities in life required a series of nos to lesser ones.
Saying no, with grace and conviction, doesn't make one a negative person, but one who has the freedom to be "on the right road." That road includes Sabbath, the goal of which "is not idleness but a proper rhythm of work and rest." It's about finding the greatest yes of all.
"In Jesus," Cootsona writes, "I found the big yes to God. And that great yes now defines all my nos."
"Say Yes To No" is a practical companion to a vibrant, jazz improvisational life.

Welcome to JesusLand (Formerly the United States of America): Shocking Tales of Depravity, Sex, and Sin Uncovered by God's Favorite Church, Landover Baptist ReviewI am a Christian. Hands down, I will never back down from my faith. However, there are a lot of people out there who claim Christianity yet, live a life totally different from Christ. Being a conservative Christian does not work. We cannot point fingers and label people as "sinner," all that does is push them away and give them a reason to write a book such as this one. I have had many bad run-ins with the Baptist church. Honestly, this book is pretty dead on with some of my experiences. I am a ministry leader but I am constantly around those who the traditional church turns its back on. So in summary:
To the Christians: stop complaining about this book. You probably caused this to happen and are just angry because you see yourself within it. Go read a book called unChristian by David Kinneman.. maybe it will change your perceptions.
To those who support this book: good job, someone has to take a stand against right winged Baptist Nazis.Welcome to JesusLand (Formerly the United States of America): Shocking Tales of Depravity, Sex, and Sin Uncovered by God's Favorite Church, Landover Baptist Overview

One Shaker Life: Isaac Newton Youngs, 1793-1865 ReviewONE SHAKER LIFE by Glendyne Wergland is one of the finest pieces of scholarship ever done on the Shakers. There is so much of merit, it is difficult to choose a few aspects to highlight. When the entirety of the book is considered, however, perhaps the most intriguing chapters are numbers three and seven.
Number Three, "Youth and Lust" provides a totally new and detailed account of the struggle a young Shaker man faced trying to live a celibate life. Wergland uses vivid passages from his diaries and speaks of his guilt and efforts to confess. At the same time she uses nineteenth century literature on related sexual topics to contextualize these temptations.
Chaper Seven, "Intimacy between Men in Shaker Society" continues this frank discussion. No previous author has so skillfully discussed issues raised by the use of flowery and sexual language between Shaker men in their correspondence, nor has possible Shaker homosexuality ever been so clearly and rationally explained. As a result, her treatment of Isaac's friendships shows a balanced and fairly accurate account of the relationships formed between Shaker men in the early nineteenth century.
Other chapters of note include the one dealing with Isaac's involvement in the Era of Manifestations. We glimpse him as both an instrument as well as one who is given the task of testing the validity of these visionists. Another chapter deals with his contributions as a master clockmaker, the final craftsman in a three generations old family tradition. The book also has clear and well explained illustrations.
In summary, Wergland has used previously unanalyzed primary resources to create a work of insight that informs. This effort helps give a correct and complete view of one particular Shaker during the earlier years of Shaker history. One Shaker Life: Isaac Newton Youngs, 1793-1865 Overview

Born Amish ReviewI have read several of Ms. Garrett's books. They always make you feel as if you are walking in her footsteps. I, being an X-member of an Old Order Amish sect, was curious to see if there were any differences within her sect and mine. I learned alot from, "Born Amish." For my sect was a little different-which isn't shocking when there are so many Amish sects. I can't wait until she publishes another book. For she is a remarkable writer. I always recommend her books. I also recommend, "My Amish Heritage", by Ruth Irene Garrett; and, "True Stories of X-Amish: Banned-Shunned-Excommunicated", by Ottie Garrett and Ben Garrett.Born Amish Overview

True Stories of X-Amish: Banned - Shunned - Excommunicated ReviewThis was the second book about the Amish that I read to satisfy my curiosity about Amish life. The stories in this book were written from interviews with people who have left the Amish life for various reasons. Before I read it I worried that the goal of the book was to slam the Amish revenge purposes or some other bad reason. After reading the book I realized that these are the stories of people in search of freedom, usually religious freedom. Others left to avoid sexual or physical abuse. Being an American I cannot be upset with x-Amish who are seeking the life that they want for themselves in the name of freedom and/or religious freedom. It is interesting to note that the Amish left Germany in the 1800s to seek religious freedom but according to this book, the community that was set up then prevented those born into the faith from practicing that same religious freedom. Because the Amish are born into the faith they are faced with a choice in their late teens to either join the Amish religion or to leave the community and never speak to their Amish relatives and friends again-what a tough choice if one has some doubt about whether to join the church or not.
Reading this book allowed me to picture Amish life in more of a balanced and normal way than reading my first book "Rosanna of the Amish" which was written by a happy Amish man-it romanticized the Amish life and didn't have any negative aspects of Amish life. The complete lack of anything negative was suspicious to me. I was left wondering if Amish life was sheer perfection with all happiness and love (albeit laden with hard physical weather and lacking in comforts such as the use of running water and indoor plumbing).
Some Amish people commit crimes but the Amish try to get the charges dropped in the American law system and they deal with (or not deal with) matters in their own way. I learned that children begin hard physical labor at a young age and that boys of 5 years old are doing the work of a full-grown man. Using some of the equipment is dangerous and it is reported that at least one major injury or death happens per week to children while performing hard labor tasks. Also it was mentioned that verbal acknowledgment of emotions (love) and physical affection (hugs and kisses) from parent to child is not done in the Amish world. Sharing emotion is looked down upon (how sad). Spanking and harsh beatings are the norm even for accidents or for slow manual labor according to a story in the book.
This book made me realize that some Amish are as curious about the non-Amish as some of us are about them. Some younger Amish sneak in bits and pieces of "English" life. For example, some teens sneak out at night to drink alcohol and take illegal drugs experimentally, much the same as some American teens do. Some "English" sneak money to Amish children who sneak to buy candy or portable radios (both are prohibited). In one case an Amish girl is not taught about sexuality or pregnancy and ends up surprised to find herself a pregnant as an unmarried teen. Some Amish families experience incest, physical and verbal abuse, just as in American culture.
The most stunning thing I learned was that the Amish use a Bible written in high German whilst the women are only allowed to learn Pennsylvania Dutch and English languages and are prevented from attending school past the 8th grade. Bible study is prohibited and only the ministers are allowed to read a Bible. This means that the Amish rely solely on the ministers to relay the information in the Bible. Several of the x-Amish in this book explain that most of the hundreds of rules imposed on how the Amish may live are written by the religious men and are not directly stated in the Bible even though they are told they are living as the Bible instructs. Simply being caught reading a Bible can result in ex-communication. Hearing the stories about people leaving the Amish in search of living what they perceive as a more true religious Christian life was enlightening and interesting to me. This book tells stories and opinions of how some people have found inconsistencies in the content Bible vs. what the Amish ministers say is in the Bible. (They were able in various ways to get a copy of a Bible in English and began reading it themselves and having conversations with non-Amish about Bible content, which is against the rules.)
The book also describes how different Amish settlements may have different rules such as manner of dress and what types of machinery are allowed. The differences between Amish and Mennonite are explained as are the exact definitions of banned, shunned, and ex-communicated.
I found this book enlightening. It is a fast read, easily read in a few hours. Be cautioned that some of the content is not suitable for young children, such as details about father/daughter incest and sexual abuse.True Stories of X-Amish: Banned - Shunned - Excommunicated Overview

God of Beer ReviewThe book "God of Beer" is an accurate portrayal of what takes place in a small town where teenage kids have nothing to do and turn to underage drinking as a way to pass the time. It starts with a teacher asking what God would have to come to their town as in order to reach the kids and realize he is there. The main character, Kyle Nelson, answered that God would have to come as beer. This angers the teacher as he had asked the question in comparison to Gandhi saying that God would have to come as bread to India because all the people are starving and they wouldn't realize that God was there unless he came as something they needed. The teacher thinks that it is wrong to compare beer to bread, but a debate ensues that since the kids have all the basic things in life they would be more relatable towards beer than bread. A group of kids forms a group in order to try and raise awareness about drinking and also lower the drinking age to 18. They have parties where they serve unmarked cans to people and most are sodas but some are beers. They do this to show that people can still have a good time without drinking. One member of the group, and probably the most popular of them all, is killed in a car accident after she drove her boyfriend home. She wasn't drunk but he could barely stand walk to the car. He was distracting her from driving which caused for the accident. This is where I think the book is fairly weak. The focus of the first hundred or so pages is all about the club and trying to improve conditions so that people won't have to drink to pass the time and when a member of their club is killed because of someone that is drunk, they completely forget about it. I can see them doing this for a while but the book goes on to explain what happens to each one of them in the upcoming year and it seems they don't care about underage drinking anymore. Most of them have said that they won't drink until they are 21 but they don't try to keep other kids from drinking like they did before. The whole focus of the books shifts because of the death, which is very accurate to what teenagers do if someone dies, but at some point I think that they wouldn't just give up on the club since they have been even more affected by drinking. Garret Keizer does a fantastic job writing this book and I recommend it to anyone because it is written so well but I personally did not enjoy this entire book.God of Beer Overview
