Flashpoint ReviewI love everything that I have read of Katherine V. Forrest with the exception of this book. Rather than presenting rich and interesting characters, she has created stereotypes and this is a political polemic rather than a novel. There are other other types of writing such as an essay which would have done just as well as this piece. But please don't let this stop you from reading her Kate Delafield mysteries or The Emergence of Green. I was very disappointed because this is not what I would have expected from a Forrest novel. I consider her one of the best novelists I have ever read. I will consider Flashpoint an abberation. When you mix politics with literature, the results can be either great or lousy. In this case it was lousy.Flashpoint Overview

Silent Heart ReviewThis is a little known gem of romantic fiction that goes to places that the more pedestrian romances never go: Victoria is an expert on Victorian erotica, but has never been able to complete an erotic encounter of her own.
Her relationships with men fail. When her relationship with Reyne is more emotionally satisfying and physically arousing she has to accept that she is a lesbian. But even with Reyne she can't find release.
It is only with Reyne's support and willingness to wait that Victoria finally finds the courage to shine a light on her repressed past. Victoria's healing happens far more quickly in fiction than real life, which is my only quibble with the story.
This is a stirring, emotional story that goes to dark places. But in the end love brings out all the light.Silent Heart Overview

Sedona Rain ReviewIn this sequel to Laguna Nights, Carole Giorgio continues to weave the magic that sets her books apart from all others, leading her trademark characters, Alexis Dorian and Samantha Riley in a breathtaking dance of romantic discovery. Alex and Samantha's unique soulmate bond permeates each and every moment of their continued journey together, even in the midst of the soul-shaking jolts life sends them. Both Laguna Nights and Sedona Rain are "must buys" because you'll find yourself reading them again and again, just to recapture the "essence" that is Alex and Samantha...and the "magic" that is Carole Giorgio!Sedona Rain Overview

To Have and to Hold ReviewThis book is my third Herring novel. The writing is good and the characters are well developed, but whoa-just when you think you know what is going to happen next with Dorian-watch out. The novel story goes from funny to being nice and romantic-then hot and steamy-then you don't know what is going to happen next. The main character is someone we can all relate to. She has been hurt and is a bit closed off and cautious about getting involved again. The people she meets are good people, but they have their own baggage, too. The novel was at times painful to read when Dorian faces some really painful pitfalls but as in all rollercoaster rides-the ride eventually stops and we end up smiling. Well done Herring. To Have and to Hold Overview

Echoes from the Mist ReviewI would have to say one of my very favorite books of all time is the prequel to this story, Cobb Island. I didn't know if I would get satisfaction from a sequel as most just don't live up to the original. I am happy to report this one isn't most!
This author did a fantastic job keeping to the story, making it as exciting, if not more so, than the first one. The twist was really a twist, not something I had guessed before I was a chapter into the story.
I *highly* recommend this book (and her others, especially Cobb Island!) for anyone looking to purchase some great reading and support one of the better authors around.Echoes from the Mist Overview

Christabel: A Novel ReviewChristabel, from the prolific Karin Kallmaker's Laura Adams persona, is a gothic romance, a tale of the supernatural and how an evil entity torments one woman's soul through generations. There are two stories told: first, how the evil found and took a young woman, Christabel, for his own in colonial New York. The second story is of the modern la Christabel, supermodel, spinning out yet another life to provide the suffering that the evil thrives on.
In Coleridge's version of this tale, even nature itself is evil (so green, so female), as is the witch Geraldine, who bewitches young Christabel with veiled references to lesbianism. Christabel is just a victim and the rescuer is Sir Leoline, who must fight both the witch and nature for Christabel's soul.
Laura Adams turns this story upside down. Geraldine represents the peaceful, natural world of the native Manhattans, and when the young Christabel meets the native woman, passion soon follows. Their joyous happiness is discovered and fouled by a demon Puritan preacher, who contrives Geraldine's downfall. Easy to do when Halley's Comet has appeared overhead -- blame it on the nearest nonconformist female and call her a witch. As the preacher takes possession of Christabel in the past, the modern day Christa has adopted desperate measures to try to break the cycle. An investment banker, Dina has renounced the part of her heritage that has passed down over time, but one touch of Christa's hand brings the power -- and the passion -- surging back. Defeated in the past, she arms herself for another battle in this lifetime.
The story weaves back and forth in time with perfect clarity. Minor characters from the past have their roles to play in the present. Even an ancient tree contributes -- significantly -- to the link between the two stories.
The plot makes for a good read, and the writing is pure Kallmaker/Adams -- prose matching time period and, of course, unbelievably erotic tension between her characters. The reality of life on the island of Manhattan in the late 1600s is well researched. The resolution is electric and quite, quite satisfactory. Once you start, you won't put it down until the last page.Christabel: A Novel Overview

Cobb Island ReviewOlivia Hazelwood, Liv to her friends, has agreed to take her younger brother, Doug to spend a week on Cobb Island, off the coast of Virginia. Since an accident claimed their parents a decade ago, Livi has been more of a mother than sister to Doug. The 29 year old linguist and openly lesbian, Liv is recently back from a Peace Corps tour in Africa and is looking forward to catching up with the changes in Doug's life. One of the biggest being that he is very much in love with Marcy Redding. Marcy's family moved last year and the teens have been nursing their love over distance. This separation has prompted Marcy to invite Doug (and Liv)to visit Cobb Island, the colonial era, ancestral home of the Redding family. Marcy has also coaxed her older sister, Kayla to help with the chaperoning duties.
The tall redheaded Kayla seems to take an immediate dislike to Doug, and possibly, to Liv. Certainly the gorgeous 25 year old has difficulty communicating with Liv in anything other than an abrupt, rather rude, not to mention secretive, manner. Her behavior is even more odd given that the women seem almost magnetically drawn to one another. Liv is surprised, confused, and a little overwhelmed by the intensity of her feelings for Kayla. Impossibly, at times Kayla seems to read Liv's mind. Or is it impossible? The three century old Redding house itself, with its secret rooms, strange noises, and a library filled with generations of Redding enigmas has as important a role in the story as any of the characters. Several things about Kayla and the house are a little strange, yet enchanting. Liv finds herself falling under the spell of both mysteries. Meanwhile, desperate for time alone, the lovesick teens decide to visit the mainland just as a storm arises, leaving their older siblings stranded and forced to confront these powerful emotions.
Trapped by the storm, the women begin researching the early years of the house. Finding a hidden journal, Liv and Kayla discover possible answers to the Redding family legacy via a third romance. Bridget Redding, and her sister-in-law, Failynn, lived on Cobb Island in the late 1600s and struggled to find a place for their love in an unforgiving time for women, and condemning of those who dared to love. Could their story hold the secret answers to questions about the Redding family, the house on Cobb Island, and possibly even why Kayla and Liv seem destined to have found each other? Thus Cobb Island contains three love stories entwined in its pages along with a number of witty interactions, sweet moments and endearing scenes between the various couples. There is even a dreadful villain who demands being detested.
Overall, Cobb Island is a magical little romance and a charming mystery. A few of the plot threads are not neatly tied at the end and some elements of the historical period appear a bit anachronistic to this reviewer. Nevertheless, the overall effect of Cobb Island is a fun and fast-paced romantic mystery with a touch of spookiness thrown into the mix. It provides more than enough pleasure to justify its purchase. In fact there is enough pleasure to anticipate future stories from Blayne Cooper, including the continued adventures of Kayla and Liv in the forthcoming Echoes from the Mist.Cobb Island Overview

The Cost of Commitment ReviewWhen last we saw Katherine "Kate" Kyle and her partner Jamison "Jay" Parker in the previous book, THE PRICE OF FAME, they had united to pull through a scandal of epic proportions. Kate had been outed and had lost her TV anchor job, but Jay was still in the closet. Now, in this sequel, Kate has become the Director of Public Information for the New York state correctional system. She takes some flak for being lesbian, but her relationship with Jay is still not known by anyone outside their circle of friends.
Jay has continued with her journalism career, and at first all seems well, but very quickly it becomes clear that rocky times are ahead. Not only are there dastardly forces at work behind the scenes that are undermining Kate and her job, but Jay cannot depend on her anonymity being guarded. Then there is a struggle for power at the highest levels of the state and federal government, and certain individuals are willing to sabotage or quite literally dispose of Kate to gain political advantage. Neither Kate nor Jay know how devious and destructive those forces will be, but even though it gradually dawns upon Kate that she is being more than undermined, she is not prepared for the lengths to which desperate men will go. It will take all her physical and emotional strength to get through the disaster that occurs-and Jay will be tested, too.
Author Lynn Ames maintains the excitement of the two women's growing relationship while making sure that the romance and hot love scenes don't derail the action side of the plot. An exciting romantic thriller, THE COST OF COMMITMENT will keep you awake late into the night wondering how Jay and Kate can possibly get out of the mess they find themselves in. Entertaining right up to the last page. ~Lori L. Caught in the Net (Alex Peres Mysteries) ReviewA new dyke detective for the armchair mystery fan has arrived! Caught in the Net is a first novel from Jessica Thomas and introduces Alex Peres. Alex is a thirty-something dyke who lives (and grew up) in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Arguably, one of the country's most famous resort towns for gays and lesbians, Provincetown is "that strange and beautiful place, where the men are pretty and the women are tough." (p1) With its seasonal population tide of tourists Provincetown plays as much of a role in Caught in the Net as many of the characters and Thomas brings the town's New England quirkiness and its queer color to life for her readers.
A thoughtful, self-sufficient, and independent woman, Alex Peres is a wry observer of nature (human and otherwise) who uses that skill to support herself. On the creative side her perceptive eye is expressed by her photography. She creates artistic impressions of the Cape and Provincetown area that are sold at local galleries. Alex's more analytical observation skills go into her work as a private detective. A job, which she explains, is filled with interesting but sometimes tedious work like following a wayward husband.
Fargo, the detective's 90-pound, black lab is as much a star of Caught in the Net as Alex. The details of Alex and Fargo's relationship will bring smiles, chuckles, tail wags, and warm fuzzy feelings, especially to readers with a canine love. Indeed Fargo's companionship is primary to Alex who has had rather bad luck in the love department.
That bad luck has held until a new woman appears in town. Janet Meacham, a beautiful, intelligent, young woman has moved to P'town to start a new chapter in her life. Alex finds herself quite taken with Janet and the attraction appears to be mutual. Alex thinks that this is a relationship that could build in a more positive direction.
Meanwhile the severed human foot that Alex, or rather Fargo, found on the beach during a daily walk is the foundation (as it were) of a series of crimes in the area. Alex's brother, a local cop is looking for a young man who may have known the owner of the foot.
This first novel from Thomas is filled with witty insights regarding human foibles with Alex personifying several endearing qualities. Of herself, Alex claims, "Frankly, I am not a great admirer of children as a species -- the younger ones smell funny and the older ones look as if they know something you don't-- but even I didn't want two young kids stumbling on this piece of flotsam or jetsam or whatever you called a lost/discarded body part". (p10) Or regarding her personal habits, "I sat behind the wheel and took a pack of cigarettes off the dashboard and lit one of the five I allow myself each day. I allow myself five. The other eight or ten I smoke are not allowed." (p11)
Although an engaging character, Alex does not quite ring true as a typical Gen-Xer, which might annoy some readers. The mystery is a little thin with a plot that is probably predictable for most fans of the genre and a tad irritating in that Alex did not seem to see it coming. However, the lovely writing, quirky characters, charming setting, and wry observations provide a great deal of promise for future Alex Peres mysteries. Many readers will find themselves caught in this net for pleasant evening's reading.

Love Shook My Heart: New Lesbian Love Stories ReviewI bought this book because I wasn't interested in the "Erotic Lesbian" anthologies that seem to dominate the gay and lesbian fiction section. It was a pleasant surprise. I have devoured this book like ice cream on a hot day. Every story (I can think of only one exception- "Shelling Peas"-too much "telling" and too preachy) had a unique voice and honest tone. I have found something to relate to in each separate story. "If This Were..." was exceptionally clever, "Swing Shift" was timely, "The View From Inside" had me laughing out loud, "Members of the Wedding" had me crying, "Wood" was a moving novella. Most lesbians will find something in each story to take with them. If you enjoy reading lesbian stories that are subtle, yet have many layers to them, this is the book to buy.Love Shook My Heart: New Lesbian Love Stories Overview

Room for Love ReviewThis was a thoroughly enjoyable book on several levels. First, it's a solid romance, with believable women doing believable things as they struggle toward an understanding and future. Second, it has deeper issues than love at its heart, including trust, faith and grief. Last, the "dramatic events" that are hinted at above are well-plotted and carried out. I'll be looking for more Frankie Jones. The fledgingly press, Bella Books, has picked some real winners!Room for Love Overview

White Lace and Promises ReviewI've been toying with the notion of reading a lesbian romance for a couple years, but none of the book descriptions sounded interesting enough to hold my attention. I ran across this one and was intrigued since I too suffer from depression and understand the 'sexual dysfunction' effect of medications.
I have to say that Herring did a decent, maybe even good, job of describing the confusion of suffering from depression. Granted, we only see and hear Betina's suffering from her partner's point-of-view, Maxine. I believe a much better piece of general fiction could be written by focusing on Betina's point-of-view through the progression of this disease. The only other complaint I have is the excessive amount of surgical procedures Maxine performed, mostly hystorectomies.
These two, minor, complaints aside, I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed reading White Lace. There was a good balance between storyline and not-quite-gratuitous sex scenes. I'm willing to give lesbian romances a second shot. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a romance with a REAL storyline and real characters.White Lace and Promises Overview

Faith's Crossing ReviewIn Carr's first installment of this series (Destiny's Bridge), Texas rancher Lex Walters rescued visiting Californian Amanda Cauble when her car was swept away by a raging flood. Despite obstacles, the two women fell in love and committed to one another. In this sequel, Amanda decides to move to Texas to live with Lex, but there's only one problem: her upper class family doesn't approve. They are wealthy and manipulative, and her parents aren't shy about their hostility. With such powerful adversaries, Lex is entirely unsure that Amanda will be able to withstand either the scrutiny or the temptations that the Caubles toss the young woman's way.

This story (which was originally coupled with Destiny's Bridge in one volume and entitled Destiny's Crossing) has been re-edited and broken out into its own volume. The edited improvements are notable and make this book a smooth, easy read which includes some funny scenes as well as some high drama. A classic type of romance recommended for lesbian readers who enjoy an occasional happy ending.Faith's Crossing Overview

Destiny's Bridge ReviewAnother of the classic series of lesbian literature, the Lex and Amanda series by Carrie Carr should be on every collector's bookshelf. I recently read and enjoyed - for the second time - the entire story. In this first of the series, Realtor Amanda Cauble's car plunges into an overflowing creek. Rancher Lexington Walters subsequently rescues her and takes her home. To make a long story short, they fall in love while Lex deals with stolen cattle and a bad relationship with her brother.
Because of this wonderful series, Carrie Carr is one of the more widely-published authors in the genre. Lex and Amanda are easy to love and it's a joy to watch their relationship grow as the series develops.

Dreams Found ReviewAussie Riley James loves her adoptive parents and brother, but wants to meet her birth mother. With her parents' blessing she locates and arranges to meet Maggie Easton, the woman who gave her up 25 years prior. Maggie, the unfortunate victim of teenage love, has dreamed of the reunion, but has never told her current husband or family about the baby. She asks Riley to hang about and do odd jobs until she tells her husband, but he is on an extended business trip. While she waits, Riley makes friends with Maggie's son Jake and becomes enamored with Maggie's complicated, straight step-daughter, Jayne.
This story is told totally from Riley's point of view. The reader experiences her fears about telling Maggie she's a lesbian and dealing with her growing feelings for Jayne. Jayne deals with some complicated feelings of her own, but the reader isn't privy to her thought process.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was a comfortable read that didn't require too much deep thinking. Recommended for a lazy afternoon accompanied with a cold beer (or two).

Redemption ReviewI have to admit that I've gone back to write this after finishing all three books in this trilogy, but that's because Beck has managed to write such a compeling series that it made me want to write a review. Redemption is about two women who meet in prison, the only real resemblance to The Shawshank Redemption that another reviewer mentioned. Angel is in the Bog for killing her husband. She doesn't deny doing the crime, although he was in the process of raping and abusing her when it happened and she only intended to "stop" him with the bat. She comes into contact with an amazing cast of characters, from Corinne the librarian, known as the "Black Widow" for the several husbands she quite joyfully murdered, and the Amazons, a group of women who live by a code of honor and try to keep the peace in the prison between the gangs and the guards. Then one day, the founder of the Amazons is brought back to the prison. Ice is an amazing collection of characteristics. Raised by artistic parents until their untimely deaths, she has been turned by life into a cold blooded killer with a highly developed sense of honor. She can snap your neck with the same talent that she uses to cultivate bonzai trees. Prison life runs in her veins while she reads books in the original Chinese and Russian. She is feared, admired and worshipped by convicts and guards alike. Framed for a murder she did not commit, Ice has allowed herself to be convicted because of the murders she has committed and can't be convicted for. Ice has to be one of the most complex characters created in modern literature. And she and Angel love each other with a passion that is frequently breathless. Beck has a real ability for writing erotic love scenes that are realistic and not crude. The book is a fascinating vision of prison life, not something that I originally thought I would find interesting. You can read just this book for a terrific story, but the entire trilogy (Retribution and Restitution are the other volumes) tells a compelling story. These characters seem like real people. You'll wish they were just so you could meet them.Redemption Overview

Talk of the Town ReviewWhat a quirky, humorous and engaging tale Talk of the Town is. When you first begin the novel, it proceeds slowly and then it grabs your attention, making you sit up and take notice - and you definitely will need to focus to keep with the lives and loves of the many characters that make up Talk of the Town.
Mallory and Gigi are childhood best friends who have been through numerous girlfriends, outrageous family members, and damaging insecurities. The latest rough patch hits Mallory at the start of the novel, who was dumped by her girlfriend and realizes that she's in love with Gigi. Gigi, other the other hand, can't seem to be faithful to her lover, Alex. Her last indiscretion, though unfound, scares her enough to go straight (no pun intended).
What follows are the trials of Mallory, Gigi and their friends, who find out true love is about tackling anxieties, following your heart, and being true to your loved ones. They all learn love is far from being simple. Talk of the Town is hilarious at times, sad at others. You'll enjoy it if you like eccentric tales of lesbian romance.Talk of the Town Overview

God of Beer ReviewThe book "God of Beer" is an accurate portrayal of what takes place in a small town where teenage kids have nothing to do and turn to underage drinking as a way to pass the time. It starts with a teacher asking what God would have to come to their town as in order to reach the kids and realize he is there. The main character, Kyle Nelson, answered that God would have to come as beer. This angers the teacher as he had asked the question in comparison to Gandhi saying that God would have to come as bread to India because all the people are starving and they wouldn't realize that God was there unless he came as something they needed. The teacher thinks that it is wrong to compare beer to bread, but a debate ensues that since the kids have all the basic things in life they would be more relatable towards beer than bread. A group of kids forms a group in order to try and raise awareness about drinking and also lower the drinking age to 18. They have parties where they serve unmarked cans to people and most are sodas but some are beers. They do this to show that people can still have a good time without drinking. One member of the group, and probably the most popular of them all, is killed in a car accident after she drove her boyfriend home. She wasn't drunk but he could barely stand walk to the car. He was distracting her from driving which caused for the accident. This is where I think the book is fairly weak. The focus of the first hundred or so pages is all about the club and trying to improve conditions so that people won't have to drink to pass the time and when a member of their club is killed because of someone that is drunk, they completely forget about it. I can see them doing this for a while but the book goes on to explain what happens to each one of them in the upcoming year and it seems they don't care about underage drinking anymore. Most of them have said that they won't drink until they are 21 but they don't try to keep other kids from drinking like they did before. The whole focus of the books shifts because of the death, which is very accurate to what teenagers do if someone dies, but at some point I think that they wouldn't just give up on the club since they have been even more affected by drinking. Garret Keizer does a fantastic job writing this book and I recommend it to anyone because it is written so well but I personally did not enjoy this entire book.God of Beer Overview
