Chopping Spree ReviewIn contrast to other reviewers, I find the plotting in this Davidson novel to be more complex and the suspicious characters to be better developed than in her previous books. The victim was a bad guy, a good guy, a two-timer, a lover who wanted (and maybe expected himself) to become faithful, a good friend, and an exploiter -- yes, all rolled into one interesting, attractive man. Likewise, the people who might have knocked him off hardly arouse indifference.
Solve riddles, read recipes, go to a Shopper's Anonymous meeting, sigh at the mistakes we all make with our children: yes, indeed, you can get a lot done reading this book. It is also a great introduction to what passes for springtime on the eastern slopes of the Rockies and to the burgeoning (some would say out of control) commercial and residential development happening here.
I had allowed myself to be put off by reviews here and finally picked up the book for a holiday weekend. I was not in the least disappointed -- except that it had taken me so long to get to it. The book engaged my brain, made me laugh out loud, and brought on ruminations about how life -- and our outrageous mistakes in it -- catches up with us all.Chopping Spree Overview

You Have the Right to Remain Puzzled (Puzzle Lady Mysteries) ReviewI enjoyed reading this book. I am a big fan of the Puzzle Lady Mysteries. I have read them all, and often look forward to a new book each year. This was a fast read and some of the statements that Cora the Puzzle Lady says in the book are comical.
I have found over the past years that the earlier Puzzle Lady Mysteries were better than the recent ones. This story made the Puzzle Lady seem very mean and feisty. In the past the character was feisty in a comical way. The Puzzle lady used to drink alcohol a little too much, but she was a sweet, happy drunk. The author now has our heroine on the wagon and she seems very bitter without her booze. While reading this book I often wished she would start to drink or get another love interest so she would lighten up. I thought the Puzzle Lady seemed a little too mean for her own good in this story. The last couple of chapters left me confused regarding how the murder occurred. I felt like the author had to quickly write the ending. You Have the Right to Remain Puzzled (Puzzle Lady Mysteries) Overview

Caught in the Net (Alex Peres Mysteries) ReviewA new dyke detective for the armchair mystery fan has arrived! Caught in the Net is a first novel from Jessica Thomas and introduces Alex Peres. Alex is a thirty-something dyke who lives (and grew up) in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Arguably, one of the country's most famous resort towns for gays and lesbians, Provincetown is "that strange and beautiful place, where the men are pretty and the women are tough." (p1) With its seasonal population tide of tourists Provincetown plays as much of a role in Caught in the Net as many of the characters and Thomas brings the town's New England quirkiness and its queer color to life for her readers.
A thoughtful, self-sufficient, and independent woman, Alex Peres is a wry observer of nature (human and otherwise) who uses that skill to support herself. On the creative side her perceptive eye is expressed by her photography. She creates artistic impressions of the Cape and Provincetown area that are sold at local galleries. Alex's more analytical observation skills go into her work as a private detective. A job, which she explains, is filled with interesting but sometimes tedious work like following a wayward husband.
Fargo, the detective's 90-pound, black lab is as much a star of Caught in the Net as Alex. The details of Alex and Fargo's relationship will bring smiles, chuckles, tail wags, and warm fuzzy feelings, especially to readers with a canine love. Indeed Fargo's companionship is primary to Alex who has had rather bad luck in the love department.
That bad luck has held until a new woman appears in town. Janet Meacham, a beautiful, intelligent, young woman has moved to P'town to start a new chapter in her life. Alex finds herself quite taken with Janet and the attraction appears to be mutual. Alex thinks that this is a relationship that could build in a more positive direction.
Meanwhile the severed human foot that Alex, or rather Fargo, found on the beach during a daily walk is the foundation (as it were) of a series of crimes in the area. Alex's brother, a local cop is looking for a young man who may have known the owner of the foot.
This first novel from Thomas is filled with witty insights regarding human foibles with Alex personifying several endearing qualities. Of herself, Alex claims, "Frankly, I am not a great admirer of children as a species -- the younger ones smell funny and the older ones look as if they know something you don't-- but even I didn't want two young kids stumbling on this piece of flotsam or jetsam or whatever you called a lost/discarded body part". (p10) Or regarding her personal habits, "I sat behind the wheel and took a pack of cigarettes off the dashboard and lit one of the five I allow myself each day. I allow myself five. The other eight or ten I smoke are not allowed." (p11)
Although an engaging character, Alex does not quite ring true as a typical Gen-Xer, which might annoy some readers. The mystery is a little thin with a plot that is probably predictable for most fans of the genre and a tad irritating in that Alex did not seem to see it coming. However, the lovely writing, quirky characters, charming setting, and wry observations provide a great deal of promise for future Alex Peres mysteries. Many readers will find themselves caught in this net for pleasant evening's reading.

The Burning Of Her Sin ReviewIf you like strong women characters, meet Brenda Strange, a wealthy lawyer who is a dead ringer for Princess Diana. Brenda has everything going for her, looks, money, and brains, about to become partner in a prestigious law firm. And then, in one terrifying moment, her life is changed forever. A disgruntled former client goes on a killing spree, leaving many of her co-workers dead and Brenda was at first thought dead. But when she comes back, it is a slow, difficult recovery from her near death experience, so she and her lover decide to move to Tampa, Florida into the house of their dreams, hoping to speed her re-entry into the land of the living. But after she and Tina move into Malfour House, an old Victorian mansion located in an exclusive community for the rich, she begins to feel the past closing in on her and ghosts screaming for her help in finding peace and justice. When no one believes her about her feelings, Brenda decides to revive her career as a private investigator. As she begins to travel a trail of love, betrayal, murder, Santeria curses and greed almost a hundred years old, she begins to realize that the past and the present are hopelessly intertwined and that either one could prove fatal. Night Mares ReviewI am not a professional 'reviewer' and I am afraid that it is beyond me to do justice to this book. I am not particularly cognizant of undercurrents, themes, significant emotional threads, symbolism - when I took English Lit in school, it almost made me hate "literature". I just loved the book and the characters, and wished it didn't have to end. I know that one's enjoyment of art, music and books can be enhanced by being enlightened as to technique, etc., but I don't have time to go into all this - I am just guided in my choices re these "cultural" pursuits as to what gives off good vibes for me and enjoy them thoroughly. I "love" Kellen but please don't ask me why I do. I think this is to do with the skill of the writer - Kellen is someone I would like to know, have live next door, be friends with and someone that I would care what happened to. My daughter felt the same way and neither of us are lesbian (that we know of!) so this is not necessarily defined by our sexuality. The main characters in Night Mares (or in Hen's Teeth, the previous Kellen Stewart book) have to deal with conflicting emotions which gives a great deal of depth to the book, making it much more than just a really good "read". I couldn't put it down - enjoyed it immensely and I have the next one on order already (even though it has been published yet).Night Mares Overview

Moving Targets ReviewI was really glad to see this book on the list of finalists for the annual Lammy awards. It's a intriguing mystery with real ambiance and complicated character development. In fact -- and this is a pretty high compliment from me -- it reminded me of JM Redmann. If you like JM, then you'll like this Helen Black mystery. I hope that Pat Welch will write more like it, and soon.Moving Targets Overview

Hen's Teeth ReviewThis is one of the most emotionally gripping novels I have read in years -- and I'm an English professor who rarely reads mysteries or crime fiction. The plot was page-turning and pulse-pounding, but what I loved was the characters and the emotional tone, and the excellent writing. I love the protagonist, Kellen, and found myself caring greatly about her and her relationships. This is one of the few novels I've read that, without making a big point of it, captures the intensity of lesbian *friendships* (and ex-lover relationships) in a way that evokes my own life and that of the women I know. It's also one of the only novels I can think of in which animals are fully present as characters -- it also captures the human-animal bonds that are such a central part of the lives of most my friends. After I galloped through Hen's Teeth in a day or two, I kept going back to it repeatedly -- and bought several more copies to send to friends. For quite a while I found it hanging around my psyche like a powerful dream.
Scott's next novel, Night Mares, is out now, and it's also excellent.Hen's Teeth Overview

Right from the Gecko (Reigning Cats & Dogs Mysteries, No. 5) ReviewI bought this book in a fit of consumption at a Books-a-Million because the quirky orange cover and title caught my eye. I expected a sort of Janet Evanovich type of romp, full of whimsy, humor, romance, danger -- just a bit of enjoyable mind candy.
Instead, although I found the writing perfectly fine and the descriptions of Hawaii tantalizing, the story itself fell flat. Very disappointing. I can suspend many levels of belief, so I didn't have a problem with the plot per se. It just didn't sparkle for me the way I'd hoped.Right from the Gecko (Reigning Cats & Dogs Mysteries, No. 5) Overview
