I love it so much I have bought 6 copies already to give as gifts. The white bean cookies are to die for...seriously. You would NEVER guess they had white beans in them! The dips, the snacks...the coffee cake will make your knees weak, all the while being low in fat. Anytime I need to go to a function where I need to bring something, I get to proudly walk in and announce that MY treat is either low in fat or healthy, and it's not a place of boring vegetables with a crappy dip. Carmelized onion dip, roasted red pepper dip. AND there's even a recipe in there to make your own dipping breads, all low in fat!

You, on a Diet: The Owner's Manual for Waist Management ReviewThis book taught me that you aren't really eating "normally" on most diets. Your body confuses a diet with a time of famine and is trying to keep you alive. Your body doesn't know that you can afford to lose the weight, and that the "famine" is self-imposed. It explains the role that chronic low-grade stress (work, relationships, etc.) plays on weight gain.
The book explains how to eat well for your body so that you are satisfied, not hungry, and in a way that your body knows it is OK to shed pounds. Your goal is to remain satisfied or pleasantly full throughout the day. The other part of the book that resonated with me is that variety is what is killing us. The authors suggest that you automate your breakfast and lunch, eating the same thing or from a small group of things every day. This takes the guesswork out of things. Then you should eat a handful of nuts before dinner, so that you do not overeat. It also explains the effect that "bad foods" have on your hormones and brain chemistry vs. the effect that "good foods" have - other than just the extra calories that you are intaking. This was most interesting, and what sets it apart from other diet books or plans.
The difference between the You Diet and any other that I have tried is that there was no 2-3 day period of feeling terrible or having to adjust. Just a clean-out of highly processed foods from our kitchen and a trip to Trader Joes for some healthy foods and lots of label reading. Now I just feel better and better the longer I do it. It is amazing how tasty whole grain foods can be and how much more they fill you up than processed carbohydrates. Shameless Exploitation in Pursuit of the Common Good: The Madcap Business Adventure by the Truly Oddest Couple ReviewThis is really several books between one set of covers. The entertaining, highly readable opening segment is the story of two men who didn't just break the rules to achieve business success: they took the rule book, set it on fire, and threw away the ashes. Anyone who has purchased "Newman's Own" products has probably noticed the label notation that all profits from the enterprise go to charity. But have you ever wondered how it all began?
"Newman's Own" wasn't the product of blinding insight or grand design. The story opens in December, 1980, as actor Paul Newman and his neighbor and friend, writer A.E. Hotchner, are hard at work in Newman's barn bottling up a small batch of the salad dressing Newman had created. What had started as a gift for neighbors and friends evolved in a couple of years into a thriving enterprise. We learn how they rejected the advice of the supposed experts in the areas of marketing, production and distribution and forged ahead based on a combination of gut instinct and sometimes blind luck.
As one Newman's Own product after another was added--pasta sauce, popcorn, lemonade--the growth of the enterprise steadily continued, much to the surprise and delight of the founders. For this allowed them to soar far higher with their philanthropic dreams than even they had envisioned.
The tone of adventuresome good humor recedes in the second major section of the book. Although Newman and Hotchner had been, and continue to be supportive of established charities, both felt the need to do something more--and so the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp for children with life-threatening illnesses was born. The initial camp soon became a model for others around the country and the world. The plight of these children is exceptionally moving and sad--but the story of the camps is one of hope, love, and affirmation of life.
There are several appendices, including a selection of letters from buyers of "Newman's Own." (Several of these are also quoted in the text. My favorite was from the woman who thought the products were great, and had also heard that Mr. Newman had been in films. She wanted to know what these films were and if any were available on home video.) There are also letters from children and parents about the Hole in the Wall Camp experience, plus some prize winning recipes from a contest "Newman's Own" co-sponsored with Good Housekeeping Magazine.

Eating in the Raw: A Beginner's Guide to Getting Slimmer, Feeling Healthier, and Looking Younger the Raw-Food Way ReviewI absolutely love this book. Carol is the reason I started on the Raw-food diet nearly a year ago. I happen to catch a glimpse of her on one of those "celebrities and their diets" shows on E and while typing away on the computer and partially listening to the show I was able to put my cynicism for some of the diets aside long enough to listen to what Carol had to say about dehydrated chickpeas sprouts turning into raw hummus and other details about eating raw while she was pushing a cart around a Whole Foods market, a place I frequent. I initially thought who on earth would purposely eat this way. Apparently she said something in that short segment that really stuck with me because 2 weeks later, out of no where, I found myself searching for anything I could get my hands on to make since of this whole raw-food lifestyle. After one day of searching I was able to find a few websites to get me going and I started cold turkey with nothing more than my Vita-mix, which I already had. I felt great immediately, but found it somewhat burdensome that every other recipe required that I sprouted this or juiced that and when it came to resources I definitely experienced information overload. I didn't want to buy expensive equipment while deciding weather or not I would continue eating this way. Where on earth do I find Spirulina Flakes? I sure wish I had Carol's book then because she answers those questions and many more. So many of these recipes are basic and require no expensive equipment which is very appealing to someone with a busy lifestyle or to someone with no interest in investing hundreds of dollars before reaping the benefits of raw foods. If you are ready to buy there is a great guide in this book, which points you in the right direction. I bought my juicer, dehydrator and Saladacco only recently after reading her book.Anyone who eats raw should be thrilled that Carol has taken on this lifestyle and furthermore written a book about it. Carol is a very beautiful woman and super model who comes off as a very real person thus breaking down a few barriers one being the very cultish feel that permeates throughout raw-food community. Carol through her book gives you the comfort in knowing that everyone can painlessly take part in this lifestyle change. The ailments she describes are things that any normal everyday person could be experiencing including myself before I removed toxins from diet. I had no knowledge of Carol's reasons for going raw when I initially trusted her opinions and started down this road but she motivated me to make a very positive life altering change, now that I know of her reasons I can certainly identify with them. Something as simple as allergies, fatigue, poor eating habits hypoglycemia and even a poor mental attitude which can lead to depression should alert you to change your diet to get motivated to take control of your health and go raw before you are actually chronically ill. So many people end up at this very point after being diagnosed with life threatening illnesses later in life but in most cases the cause can be traced back to years of abuse stemming from poor food choices. I love the fact that her support system includes health professionals such as Dr. Timothy Brantley who have motivated and encouraged while guiding her through her raw food journey.
I was not a Vegan before starting the raw-food diet a year ago and wasn't thrilled that I had to become one in order to take part. Just like vegans I also love animals which is why I ate organic and caged free when ever possible just as Carol mentions in her book so it is no surprise that I love the fact that Carol advocates the eating of raw fish and other raw animal products, because they do have their place in a healing diet, weather strict vegans want to agree or not. Her choice in advocating this as an option in the world of raw food, gives the entire raw-food movement a stamp of legitimacy in my opinion. It also opens up the idea to those who wouldn't ordinarily consider it at all. I think it boils down to making choices that are best for your body because we're all different and there is no cookie cutter diet that works in the exact same manner for everyone. Even Dr. Bernard Jensen Doctor of Iridology and advocate of Nutrition and Holistic Health strongly advocated the use of Raw Goats Milk as a healing aid to many of his patients.
If you prefer to go completely vegan then this book can even be used as a good stepping stone between the world of cooked foods and the world of Raw foods, I'm not too fond of the sound of fertile eggs but I occasionally like having the option to test out some of the raw cheeses, and a few of the raw fish recipes such as "Doctor. Minarik's Ceviche Royal" have been fabulous and I don't miss out on having my raw goats milk smoothies. I absolutely love the fact that real chefs from real restaurants contributed to the recipes in this book. If you've read or attempted many of the amateur recipes on some of the popular raw foods websites or from a particularly poorly edited Raw-Food reference book then you'll understand my excitement. Particularly impressive are the contributions made by Kelley Serbonich who is the executive chef at Hippocrates Health Institute which was started by the highly revered Ann Wigmore over 40 years ago.I think Carol's book is up there with Nomi Shannon's "The Raw Gourmet" for great exotic recipes and with Shazzie's "Detox Your World" for realism and down to earth rapport building with its readers. I would highly recommend this book as well as the books mentioned above to anyone starting out on their raw-food journey, also check out Carols website for a few good resources (www.carolalt.com). There are so many wonderful books on the Raw-Food diet & holistic health such as "Sunfood Diet Success System " by David Wolf, "The Uncook Book" by Juliano Brotman, & "Conscious Eating" by Dr. Gabriel Cousens these are just a few good books that worked very well for me in the beginning and will prove to be very useful for anyone starting out or who is well on their way.

Eat for Health: Lose Weight, Keep It Off, Look Younger, Live Longer (2 Volume Set) ReviewI first read Joel Fuhrman, M.D.'s book "Eat To Live" May 2007 after my father died of heart disease. I have always been a vegetarian but I have always been overweight as well. I had 50 extra pounds to lose and my main goal has always been health over looks. I learned from his book that being a Vegan also means no processed foods or animal products of any kind. I love that book and lost those 50 pounds that I had never been able to lose before age 42.
After a year living the "Eat To Live" plan I read "Eat For Health" twice. The differences are huge. The biggest difference is that Dr. Fuhrman takes us Americans through 4 stages of gradual eating changes by doing some food exercises and stepping down animal products and processed foods. The only foods he asks us to eliminate immediately are all cheese, butter and transfats. I can see why he changed his point-of-view to gradually add vegetables, fruits and beans to our diets because otherwise it can be a shock to our typical way of eating and most people will reject it as they did in his book, "Eat To Live."
I find I need the extreme approach right off the starting line and I have learned to love vegetables and fruits. I feel that his gradual steps to eliminate meat and processed foods and grains was backpedaling from his original book, but on the other hand I fully understand why he did it and that was to reach as many people to change their eating habits as possible and so in this content, it makes perfect sense. Before May 2007 I was a vegan who rarely ate fruits and vegetables thinking cereal and popcorn was healthy, now I thrive on those foods and have kept my weight down to near ideal with no effort at all.
I have always loved reading nutrition books and before Joel Fuhrman, M.D. I thought Dr. Dean Ornish and Dr. Oz were the best, but now I see that they both focus far too heavily on whole grains, which Dr. Fuhrman says to eat very little of because they are not dense in nutrition. The rule of this plan is to eat foods highest on the nutrient index and avoid foods with little nutritional value all-together.
Here's a list of the foods he says we can eat from his book in unlimited quantities, and these are the only foods I eat myself. This plan is the only book that made perfect sense to me and I knew in my core that this is the only choice I would make for optimal health and wellness.
HIGH-NUTRIENT FOODS THAT CAN BE EATEN
IN UNLIMITED QUANITIES
LEAFY GREEN VEGATABLES
romaine lettuce, leaf lettuces, kale, collards, Swiss chard, cabbage, spinach, bok choy.
SOLID GREEN VEGATABLES
artichokes, asparagus, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, celery, cucumber, peas,
Green peppers, string beans, zucchini.
NON-GREEN, HIGH NUTRIENT VEGATABLES
beets, eggplant, mushrooms, onions, tomatoes, peppers, water chestnuts, cauliflower,
squash, carrots.
BEANS AND LEGUMES
red kidney beans, pinto beans, soybeans, lentils, black-eyed peas, black beans.
FRESH FRUITS
apples, apricots, blackberries, blueberries, grapefruit, grapes, kiwis, mangoes, nectarines,
all melons, oranges, peaches, pears, pineapples, plums, strawberries, tangerines.

Eat This Not That for Kids: Be the Leanest, Fittest Family on the Block ReviewReaders familiar with the popular Eat This Not That!: Thousands of Simple Food Swaps That Can Save You 10, 20, 30 Pounds-or More! will find this book similar in format- except this time the content is aimed at kids.
The book consists of seven chapters. Here's a brief rundown of what you can expect from each:
-Chapter 1 covers "8 rules of kid's nutrition" which includes such advice as "never skip breakfast" and "snack with a purpose"
-Chapter 2 discusses choosing the right foods at fast food restaurants such as Arby's or Applebees
-Chapter 3 talks about "menu decoding". Since the book can't cover every restaurant you'll ever eat at, it teaches the reader how to read a typical menu- what to look for, what choices to make. It does this by going over general menus of Chinese restaurants, Mexican restaurants, etc.
-Chapter 4 goes over making proper buying choices at restaurants. Here the reader is taught how to read labels.
-Chapter 5 covers eating at schools, which means, of course, the school cafeteria. Vending machines choices are also included because most schools (unfortunately) have them.
-Chapter 6 discusses eating at home. A nice touch here is the sample menus and recipes.
And last but not least, Chapter 7 talks about exercise. Included are sample activities to keep your kids fit. I personally suggest trying a pedometer- kids like to fiddle with them and counting steps is fun too.
All-in-all, I found this to be a great little book and actually quite fun to read with its many pictures. With good knowledge in hand, the only other obstacle a parent faces is getting their kids motivated to carry out the advice in the book.Eat This Not That for Kids: Be the Leanest, Fittest Family on the Block Overview

Whole Grains Every Day, Every Way ReviewLorna Sass's latest book, "Whole Grains Every Day, Every Way" is a real winner! I was privileged to test a few of Ms. Sass's recipes and was impressed with their robust flavors, aromas, and textures. Some folks are turned off by the idea that a recipe is "healthy," thinking that it means bland flavors and straw-like textures (haven't we all encountered *those* recipes?). Not so here! These recipes will find a home in any good cook's recipe collection.
As in all of her previous books, Ms. Sass has a unique, almost minimalist approach to seasoning. She pares down the lengthy ingredient lists of many ethnic recipes and uses just a few of a cuisine's defining herbs and spices to create deep, complex, and extremely satisfying flavors. Her taste buds are right on target. Some examples of her on-the-mark flavoring techniques are found in Thai Curried Chicken Soup with Brown Jasmine Rice, which has become a staple at our house, as have her Oat and Turkey Soup with Tex-Mex Flavors and her Ethiopian Chicken Stew with Teff Polenta.
Her Roasted Brown Rice Pilaf with Leeks incorporates an interesting method for making a very flavorful and versatile pilaf -- using only 4 ingredients. That's hard to beat!
Ms. Sass's delicious desserts are too numerous to mention. One our favorites is Brown Basmati Rice Pudding Custard. It is so fragrant and delicious that it satisfies diners who love custards and flans, and also those who love rice pudding at the same time. Her Biscotti were lighter than many I've had and beautifully crunchy without being teeth-shattering.
This is a book that will rise to the top of my "Favorites" in my cookbook list.Whole Grains Every Day, Every Way Overview

anyone trying to drop a few pounds without feeling like they are a rigid

timelines tracking how portions have crept up is an amazing eye opener.

In Pursuit of the Common Good: Twenty-Five Years of Improving the World, One Bottle of Salad Dressing at a Time Review"In Pursuit of the Common Good" (subtitled: Twenty Five Years of Improving the World, One Bottle of Salad Dressing at a Time) is a non-fiction work written by the late Paul Newman and Aaron E. Hotchner (American author, most known IMHO for his novels about Ernest Hemmingway).
This book is about the founding of "Newmans Own" natural foods, how it all started with Newman not being sure what to do with leftovers of his personal salad dressing made in a batch intended as holiday gifts for friends, and why they decided to give 100 percent of the profit from "Newmans Own" to charity.
I feel that the first few chapters would be interesting for anyone planning to start a small business, especially one selling food products. The challenges and pitfalls that they overcame are very interesting- I had no idea that a well-known movie star would have to go through all of this just to start a business. I was also surprised that Newman was very involved in the formula for the salad dressing, and other products such as the salsa and pasta sauces.
As an example, the first "Newmans Own" maranara sauce was based on a recipe Newman wrote on the back of a paper bag and went through no less than 10 "pre production" iterations before it met with PLN's approval to produce.
The methods used by Newman and Hotchner to gather public opinion about their products are noteworthy also. Newman's Own saved many thousands of dollars by not listening to the so called "marketing experts" and using their own methods (saving an estimated $1,320,000 in pre-production research).
It's worth noting that prior to Newman's Own, large food producers such as Kraft, etc. felt it was impossible to offer "all natural" foods with fresh ingredients for sale to the general public. In this way all of Newman's Own products were pioneers in the area of natural foods containing no chemical preservatives.
Newman at first balked at the idea of having his face on the product labels but was encouraged to do so by Ellen Posey (wife of broadcaster and former F1, Indy and sports car racer Sam Posey). Ellen was also responsible for the distinctive design of the Newman's Own product labels.
It is a light and humorous read, and like the Newmans Own products, the proceeds from sale of the book go to "Hole in the Wall Camps" for crippled and terminally ill children.
Each section of the book has a few pages of reprinted letters from people commenting about Newmans Own products. One letter is addressed to "Mr Redford"; Hopefully Paul took that with good humor.

100-Calorie Snack Cookbook ReviewAt first glance of this cookbook, I thought "wow! This is WONDERFUL! Such a pretty cookbook" However, a little more reading made me disappointed in things that are lacking...so I'd like to touch on both positive and negatives and allow you to make your own decision.
Incidentally, It always makes me leery when the majority of good reviews do not have the "Amazon verified purchase" stamp on them--especially when the review says they ordered the book but the lack of the "Amazon verified Purchase" stamp on the review dictates they did not. I'm not saying the reviewers are connected to the book company or author and didn't really order the book, but this book had so many funky dishes that it's the one case where I can't say I didn't wonder...just sayin'.
Positives: Really well produced. This book has photographs of almost every single dish on rich glossy stock paper right there next to the recipe. Nice touch. Really helps you not only see the finished product but also serving suggestions as well. Nice compact size too.
Not just low calorie, but low fat too. Nice.
Tasty dishes are included such as turkey sliders (but, um...here's the thing...the calorie count is without the bun so it might should be called turkey patty :-) ), smoked ham pita (yes, this one includes the pita in the calorie count), mini rice krispie treats (basically regular rice krispie treats, but cut to be tiny--but a good idea for a sweet fix), scottish oatmeal scones ( I want to make these; they look so good, but I have yet to find the "graham flour" you need in any grocery. I tried it with regular flour and wheat and didn't like the results), baby arugula blood orange and blue cheese salad, watermelon and feta salad, dirty rice,stuffed zucchini boats, etc. mmmm. all yummy
Negatives: But...aw, darn it...here's the thing that I wished had not been part of this otherwise wonderful treat of a book ( I mean, 100 calorie dishes! yahoo! You can eat lots of these and graze all day without guilt!)
First, I gotta say my honey and I both have a really weird-food-loving-diverse palette. But still...there are some dishes in here even WE wouldn't touch or, if we would, they sure aren't "cravable" so I thought I'd list the dishes and you can decide...Afterall, that would be fine if there were so many dishes that your choices were massive, but there are just around 200 recipes which is one per page...I will say one of her recipes has, in the description "Inspired by a recipe from a pal, this mixture has a flavor that most people have a hard time wrapping their brain around." See, to me, I might think that might be one I'd leave out of the cookbook if I need to start out saying that...but...Everyone's palette is different so it's best you make your own opinion:
here are some of the recipes in the book that I, personally, would rather eat a rice cake then cook:
*deviled eggs with capers, anchovies, and olives
*smoked trout on finn crisp crackers
*smoked trout with horseradish
*tomatoes and vodka (you dont drink the vodka. ha ha; you just mix *tomatoes with vodka and curry powder. that's it. wha? )
*pickled cherries ( I would need that shot of vodka to eat pickled cherries. Or I'd need to win something really good in a bet.)
*pickled carrots with carroway (just in case the cherries didn't cure your pickled food cravings. p.s. say that recipe name 10 times fast for fun.)
*smoked salmon ak-mok
*spicy sesame nori cottage cheese (for those who haven't tried it, nori is black seaweed. I like it on sushi)
*garlicky asparagus with anchovy
*sardines with mustard
(oh, how she does love her some seafood and raw seafood in a good deal of these dishes...just not my personal snack favorite. But I can't speak for everyone)
*wasa crackers with cream cheese and radishes (not odd, just bland)
*smoked salmon nori
*watermelon saandwiches
*smoked salmon tartare
*smoked salmon with asparagus and cucumbers
*scallops seviche (sic...author misspelled this, not me)
(oooo more seafood you dont cook..who needs to spend the time for snack treats, I guess, right?! **giggles**Actually, I like scallops ceviche but, again, I have weird tastes and I think most people would prefer to cook em.)
*avocado and shrimp seviche (more uncooked seafood...)
*ginger tofu
*green beans and tofu ( I like uncooked tofu but not over green beans with vinegar and I'm weird like that anyway)
*tea poached prunes (just stick those prunes in some tea and slurp em up!)
*strawberries with balsamic vinegar and black pepper
*date smoothie (why use bananas and strawberries when ya got dates, right?)
*lemony green and white beans with anchovy paste
*oven roasted parsnips
bok choy with sesame
*candied jalapeno peppers
*chutney stuffed jalapeno peppers
*horshradish yogurt dip
*and the ever-favorite chocolate spoons (really? seriously? the recipe is to melt chocolate and dip a spoon in it and then lick it? seriously? that's a recipe? **giggles** Ya think anyone will guess your secret ingredient here...just sayin...) that's just a sampling of a few things I don't care to pack in my lunchkit. And there's only one recipe per page in the book so there's not a large sampling, in my opinion, of enough other goodies.
Hmmm...just thought of something else. Another negative? I personally don't like to see cookbooks with odd ingredients that not everyone will have easy access to. That's just me...we're lucky to be near several natural food stores in Austin so I am often able to find even odd things but it should be noted as not everyone is going to easily find some of her ingredients needed even in a natural grocery or perhaps not be in the mood to make a special trip if that's not your everyday grocery store so it should be noted I think what some of the recipes call for:
*nori
*farro
*non-fat greek yogurt
*seaweed sheets
* beet greens (not beets)
*fish sauce
*rice noodles
*lemon grass stalks
*vietnamese chli paste
*pitted medjool dates
*olive paste
*black turtle beans
*mestemacher
*bulgur wheat
*powdered wasabi, ( I can get regular wasabi but can't find powdered)
*shelled fava beans
*fresh jalapenos and chipotles (easy to find here in Texas. Not so everywhere else)
*wheat bran (the powder, not the cereal)
*ground flaxseed
*Marcona almonds...I could go on and on...Yeah, it's not your everyday "what I have in my pantry" cookbook. But these may very well BE in your pantry. At least you can guage. It's up to you whether that's ok or not.
Also, many of the recipes are for drinks rather than things to eat, such as to add honey and vanilla to a glass of milk, or blueberries and lemon juice to green tea, or maple syrup and lemon juice to water (I tried this one. "Not so much"...it won't be a repeat try, I'm sad to say. :-) Liquid calories just aren't as filling for me personally but drink recipes may be something others would like included.
There are recipes in here I do like even if totally simple that remind you of snack ideas to help you shake things up a bit and get variety in your diet, even if just putting pb and j on a ricecake or ham and cheese on a pita or craisins on celery...not really recipes but good ideas from her. She also has a "recipe" for hollowing out the bread in a bagel and putting cheese on top. Another "recipe" she calls black and white edame is this: put salt and pepper on edamame. That's it...She could have listed recipes like this with several recipes per page rather than using a whole page for the above recipe of cheese on a hollow bagel or salt and peppering a vegetable for example (there are lots of 2 ingredient recipes which is good for ideas but dont need to take up the whole page in my humble opinion)...but the great idea fell flat with not making so many of the foods ones you crave everyday and can share with the whole family or friends. Will I keep it? Maybe so. I like even some of the odd recipes in here. but mostly the ones I like are just simple like cucumber sandwiches that I don't really need a recipe for but that reminds me of good low calorie ideas when I can't think of something.
I'm more likely to just tear out the ten or so recipes or ideas I like and put them in my recipe binder. Do I think most people will find it keepable? Probably not. I eat lots of fish and vegetables and that's a good deal of my diet. But I'm observant enough to know the majority of America isn't on a mediterranean diet and even if you scrap all the fish and raw fish dishes, isn't going to find putting peanut butter and honey on kashi cheddar crackers, or dipping pretzel sticks into a tiny tiny bit of chocolate a "recipe"...but if you, instead, take those recipes as good reminders of how to bring new ideas to your snacks...AND you have a diverse palette, well then maybe it would be worth it.
Hopefully this is enough of my own personal overview to help you decide if it's best for you. You may love all of the above...if so, now you know!
I love some of this cookbook, I love the idea of it mostly...but hope maybe there will be an improved follow up. The idea was good. the photography and style was good. But, sadly, I think it will not reach the appeal of a large audience...though it will provide a few new low cal snack ideas even so.
