Hands-On Math Around the Year (Grades 1-3) ReviewThis book has really great ideas/activities, and the book covers all the national standards! These concepts in this book can be applied to other materials and themes as well. Each theme concludes with children's book titles and additional activities you could add to a unit study/theme. This is a great interactive math book, I highly recommended it!Hands-On Math Around the Year (Grades 1-3) Overview

Increase Your Puzzle IQ: Tips and Tricks for Building Your Logic Power ReviewI wanted to echo Charles Ashbacher's positive and fairminded review of this book (and counter the hostile and unfair review by the first reviewer). This book by Marcel Danesi is designed to provide people with an accessible way to approach logic puzzles (as Ashbacher pointed out, there is a good deal of *mathematical* puzzles as well but they do not require a great deal of math background). If -- as the negative reviewer argued -- this book is on a introductory level, so much the better! There are a lot of people who would like to and should get into logic puzzles and games.
This book is a great way to avoid some of the pitfalls and intimidating obstacles faced by puzzle-solvers -- whether you are a novice or an *expert.*
As for the comments made by the 1st reviewer ... it really is unfair to bash this book based on some sort of egotistical grounds as that particular reviwer seems to be doing. If this book is mostly for *beginners* -- and I believe, on the contrary, that it would be great for puzzle enthusiasts as well -- then there is absolutely nothing wrong with that! Everyone needs to be able to walk before they can run and if beginners get a taste for puzzle-solving from a book like this and go on to harder puzzles, then great for them! Frankly, in this world today, we need to encourage more people to get into logic rather than discourage people by the kinds of arrogant attitudes displayed by the 1st reviewer.
Also recommended: *Problem Solving Through Recreational Mathematics* by Averbach & Chein, *Puzzles for Pleasure* by Barry Clarke, *Mensa Logic Brainteasers*, and Marcel Danesi's new book *The Puzzle Instinct* (which not only provides puzzles but also discusses puzzles from an anthropological perspective ... i.e., how puzzles are a part of various important themes in human culture throughout recorded history).Increase Your Puzzle IQ: Tips and Tricks for Building Your Logic Power Overview

Football Math: Touchdown Activities and Projects for Grades 4–8 ReviewI bought this for my 9 year old son who is only in third grade. He gets good grades in math, but hates it. This product made learning math fun for him and he has spent alot of time even in the car doing problems in this book. It is a lot of fun for him. I plan to order him this year after year as they come out with new ones. Some of the problems of course are difficult for the little ones, so I would like to see them come out with one that is grade specific and not 4 - 8, but overall we were very pleased with the product and it did everythign we had hoped it would do to encourage our son to explore math.Football Math: Touchdown Activities and Projects for Grades 4–8 Overview

The Mathematics of Coding Theory ReviewIn this book, the emphasis is on the mathematics, it can be considered a book on abstract algebra where the applications are restricted to the creation of codes for the transmission of binary data. Detailed explanations of groups, rings, fields, polynomial fields, primitive roots, and primitive polynomials with theorems and complete proofs are given. Other necessary background material such as probability, combinatorics and linear algebra are included. Overall, the mathematical level is at that of the junior or senior in the math major. There are exercises at the ends of the chapters with some solutions included in an appendix.
While the book has more than enough theory, it is not suitable for a computer science course designed to teach how codes are used in the transmission of data. There are too few concrete examples for it to be used for that purpose. I would not use it for such courses although I would consider using it for a course in abstract algebra, for the applications are those that most modern math majors would understand and appreciate.

Making, Breaking Codes: Introduction to Cryptology ReviewThis book is great for anyone just starting to learn about cryptology. It doesn't expect you to understand large amounts of mathematics, and goes through the necessary mathematics to understand the subject and problems presented. Additionally, this book has an answer key for selected problems (not just a few, but many problems), which makes it great for the person wanting to teach themselves the subject at their own pace. Also, it makes for a good reference for the person already familiar with cryptology. Finally, it is a great book for the experienced mathematician that wants to see modern/abstract algebra applied to a modern day subject.Making, Breaking Codes: Introduction to Cryptology Overview

Lectures on Clifford (Geometric) Algebras and Applications ReviewThis is a very interesting little book on Clifford algebras and applications. It contains six lectures. The editors have written an appendix where a brief review of existing software for computations with Clifford algebras is also presented.
The first lecture, by the late Professor Pertti Lounesto, is a concise but very clear and pedagogically brilliant introduction to Clifford algebras. A more extensive overview can be found in his book "Clifford Algebras and Spinors" (Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 2nd ed., 2001).
The second lecture, by Ian Porteous, analyzes the mathematical structure of Clifford algebras for real and complex nondegenerate quadratic spaces of arbitrary rank and signature. The third lecture, by John Ryan, focuses on Clifford analysis. The fifth lecture, by J. M. Selig, explores some applications of Clifford algebras in engineering. Finally, in the sixth (and last) lecture, Thomas Branson explains some applications of Clifford algebras in differential geometry.
However, from my perspective, the fourth lecture by William E. Baylis is the most controversial. In fact, the application of Clifford algebras in physics is too important. The discussion on the merits of the so-called algebra of physical space (APS) over the spacetime algebra (STA) of David Hestenes is biased: the author advocates the use of APS as in his book "Electrodynamics: A Modern Geometric Approach" (Birkhäuser, Boston, 1999).
Hestenes' STA is the most clear and efficient framework to deal with relativity: actually, it is the fact that STA can easily display the invariants that makes its superiority as a real Geometric Algebra - not only another Clifford Algebra. Besides, the complex paravectors of APS transform the neat structure of Clifford Algebra into a real mess: the geometric interpretation of complex numbers is based on C as a real algebra - not as a field.Lectures on Clifford (Geometric) Algebras and Applications Overview

Calculus: One Variable ReviewI am using this book in a 2 semester Calculus coarse and this books makes it A LOT harder then it should be. This book tends to over complicate simple concepts. Calculus: One and Several Variables, Ninth Edition ReviewThis is a superb textbook and it's easy to see why the book is in its ninth edition. What I really enjoyed (yes, I know this may sound a little incongruous in relation to calculus) was the step-by-step build-up of knowledge with good, clear examples. Also, for the problems at the end of each section, all the odd problems have solutions, so one can get some practice (something that is unfortunately rare for many textbooks).
Before going through this book, I had minimal exposure to calculus and what I had seen wasn't very favorable. This book was a key reason why I now really enjoy the subject and feel very comfortable in this area.Calculus: One and Several Variables, Ninth Edition Overview
