Catlow: A Novel Review
This book from June, 1963, has its locales from Tucson, Arizona Territory, to the desert areas of Sonora and Hermosilla, the southwestern U.S. and Mexico. Hot buried gold with hotter desert amid rampaging Apaches and deadly Seri Indians.
This is a light-hearted romp concerning a large quantity of legendary Mexican gold (once Confederate gold actually) being moved to Mexico City via a mule train or 'conducta'. Though the United States law and the entire Mexican Army will be pursuing Bijah Catlow, he will attempt to steal the $2,000,000 dollars in gold. But a woman, a Mexican general, and passing through Seri Indian country alive (for the Seri use poison tipped arrows) are complications which have given Catlow much worry. Water will also be a problem with deposits as much as 40 to 60 miles apart, with many of them possibly dry this time of year. But Catlow figures that $2,000,000 dollars in stolen silver and gold are more than worth the risk.
Catlow's life long acquaintance, 'never truly enemies and never truly friends', with Marshal Ben Cowan is another of those complications with which Catlow must deal. Thre is a lot of humor in this novel, more so than in many Louis L'Amour books, yet there is much danger and suspense also. The book is much better than the movie, starring Yul Bryner and Richard Crenna, which changed the story greatly and played it for too much humor.
Re-reading CATLOW is always similiar to meeting up with an old friend, something I do yearly. It is another of the Louis L'Amour books that can hold a reader's returning attention, read after read.

Buckskin Run ReviewHere you'll find tales of cattle and cowboys, gold and greed, rewards and revenge, and country as wide open and raw as the Arizona dessert or the great Rocky Mountains. In this collection of eight short stories the world's best selling writer of westerns takes the reader back to the raw boned times of leather, bullets, and ten gallon hats. It was a time when men were men and anything that moved was a target. It was a time when the law reigned supreme at least, that is, till it got in the way of the business at hand. It was a time when good ranch land was as valuable as gold and equally fought over. It was the time of the cowboy.
As fans all around the world already know, Louis L'Amour brings these rough times to life with his stories. No one spins a tale quite like he does. The eight stories here are prime examples of L'Amour at his best. Between each story L'Amour has included historical notes which, while not exactly related to the stories in any particular way, help to bring a deeper sense of reality to the anthology.
Buckskin Run is a fantastic collection of gritty western yarns and it's a great action packed read from the first page to the last.

The Man from the Broken Hills ReviewA solid entry from Louis L'Amour. The novel is a suspensful, cattle rustling whodunit. Milo Talon, a back trail rider, decides to hook up with one of a group of ranches in West Texas. A range war between some or all of these outfits seems imminent. Milo strikes up a good friendship with a fellow Stirrup-Iron hand, meanwhile he is coming to grips with some of his past catching up to him. A nicely paced story that always kept my interest. Hint: Pay close attention to the first sixteen pages or so, otherwise it will not shape up as much of a mystery for you. Milo Talon appears in one more novel by L'Amour, but that's a different story. I have read a dozen of Louis L'Amour's titles, and this has become one of my favorites. "Light 'n set!"The Man from the Broken Hills Overview

To Tame a Land ReviewWhen I was just a little boy... My cousin gave me a box set of five Louis L'Amour books and To Tame a Land was the first one I read. It was also the first book I remember reading that was not written for children and it hooked me. Completely.
An epic story with a moral but deadly hero, To Tame a Land tells the story of a boy orphaned on a wagon train headed west. With natural skill and the luck of Raggedy Andy he grows into a gunfighter as fast as John Wesley Hardin, a bronc buster, a gold miner, a card sharp and a cattle driver. The story starts with a sad little boy and ends with man fighting for the woman he loves. Corny Cliches - sure - but this book captures the language and feel of the old west. Scratch that - it DEFINES the old west as we all know it. I re-read the book recently and twenty years later it still works (although it seemed awfully short the second time around...).To Tame a Land Overview

Sacagawea's Nickname: Essays on the American West (New York Review Collections) ReviewWe all know Larry McMurtry best as fine, and successful, novelist whose work revolves around and in the American West. Perhaps he no longer has the stamina or time for fiction as he seems to have turned more and more to the essay form. "Sacagawea's Nickname" is a collection of twelve essays originally published in the most non-Western The New York Review of Books. The irony of their original appearance aside, these are simply wonderful essays. In one essay McMurty declares "The Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition" (available in a newly published edition) to be the American Epic. In a companion piece he speculates about the expedition's guide Sacagewea's place in the company, wonders about her relationship with William Clark and laughs at her bumbling husband Charbonneau. In another essay he heaps scorn upon the pulp Western writers Zane Grey and Max Brand, while in another he waxes ecstatically upon a dinner with writer and poetess Janet Lewis. Whether writing about Western water issues and John Wesley Powell or about the professional anthropologists who tried to make their name off the Zuni tribe, McMurtry is always fascinating, provocative and highly readable. He, himself, is a Western treasure.Sacagawea's Nickname: Essays on the American West (New York Review Collections) Overview

The Key-Lock Man ReviewI read constantly, but had never read a Louie L'Amour book (or any Western novel) until I was given Keylock Man by my father-in-law. Tore was a gun-runner for the Finnish Underground in WW II, among other amazing things, so when he gave me this book as a gift, I figured I better at least scan it that night before going to sleep.
Big mistake! The book grabbed me from the first sentence, and I could not go to sleep until I had read it all the way through. It was rivetting.
Now, you have to understand that my first college degree was in English, so I have read ALL of the "classics" and most of the almost classics. And, like most of my fellow students, I generally detested them because most were just plain boring. L'Amour books have a better plot, interesting characters, and are just plain written better. They move you right along so you can't put them down.
Keylock Man is my favorite L'Amour book. Keelock is an honorable, honest man who is must rely on his own toughness, wits, cunning, and skills to stay ahead of a posse who is, for the most part, comprised of good men who do not themselves realize that their task is unjust. He does not want to hurt them, he simply wants to be left alone. Although unjustly persecuted, he shows remarkable restraint, and the posse members begin to waiver as they begin to realize that the Keylock Man is not acting like they think he will. In some ways, the interactions of the posse over the time of the chase remind me of the classic movie "12 Good Men," as the facts they discover force them to confront their own preconceptions.
Now, some people, including me until I had read this book, think that Westerns in general are trash novels, or L'Amour books are not good literature because they are enjoyable to read. But that's what the self-appointed critics said of Mozart, Edgar Allen Poe, Herman Melville (remember Moby Dick) when they were alive, and all three died penniless. Now they are seen as some of the greatest masters of their craft.
So the question is, do you want to miss out because you're trying to be as big a snob as some self-appointed expert, or do you want to experience a rivetting, entertaining, enjoyable reading experience?
Just be warned--if you're brave enough to buy this book, you'll soon be buying all of L'Amour's books. But you won't regret it.The Key-Lock Man Overview

The Proving Trail: A Novel ReviewProving Trail really does proves that Louis L'Amour was one of our great western writers. The story centered around a young man, Kearney McRaven who was told that his father committed suicide but later learned that he was murdered. His quest for justice, revenge and recovering what should be his' is written in a highly skilled and easy to read book by late Louis L'Amour.
The story read very well, interesting characters that dotted L'Amour's landscrape as well as the plot that expand in complexity while maintaining an quick pace. I believed this is one of Louis L'Amour's better efforts. His diverse characters are better developed and easily blend into the story. Mystery, romance, gunfights, there are something for everyone in this book.
I am bit surprised that there isn't a movie made from this book. The source material is ideal for a good western. This book come highly recommended for any western reader fan, mandatory for any Louis L'Amour fan and anyone who like to read an entertaining quick reading book. The Proving Trail: A Novel Overview

The Drive-In (A B-Movie with Blood and Popcorn, Made in Texas) ReviewThis has got to be one of Lansdale's strangest stories. Everything beyond the fences of the drive-in disappear and as the popcorn and candy run out strange things start to happen. A new god is born and his name is the popcorn king.

Pat F. Garrett's the Authentic Life of Billy, the Kid ReviewFrederick Nolan is one of the most prolific living writers on the economic strife in Lincon County, New Mexico commonly known as "the War".
The Pat Garrett version of the War was almost entirely written by Roswell postmaster, Ash Upson, and was designed to improve Garrett's lot in the eyes of history as well as to further his political fortune. Consequently, Garrett's version has always been suspect amoung serious historical scholars although it is one of the most frequently quoted sources of "facts" related to the Kid. Garrett's seemingly singlehanded resolution of the problem by killing the Kid after the two primary proponents of the Regulator faction, John Henery Tunstall and Alexander McSween, were killed by members of the Murphy, Fritz and Dolan faction, is placed into historical prespective by Dolan's meticulous research and readable language..
Nolan's writing and research tracking the actual chronology of the War based on the Garrett version not only is designed to set the record straight historically; but also demonstrates the true facts giving rise to the War are at least as fascinating as the legends.
The Lincoln County War has been referred to as the largest civil insurrection in the history of the United States, reaching right into the halls of Congress and the White House.
Readers of Dolan's annotated responses to the Garrett version will appeal to serious history buffs and the casual reader of western history about one of the true legends of the old west.

Reading Deadwood: A Western to Swear By (Reading Contemporary Television) ReviewLike so many Lavery-edited works, the essays are works of hyper-extension, in which the essayists try ever so hard to find subliminal and subtextual meaning where there is none. It is the blight of popular culture studies that the so-called academics who endeavor to give extraordinary signficance to "art" that is meant more to entertain than to edify. I am not saying that "Deadwood" isn't one of the greatest shows ever to be sent over the airwaves (cable waves?), because it is every bit deserving of the attention this book presumes to give it. Unfortunately, the essays here focus more on the putative "hidden meanings" of the show instead of simply examining why "Deadwood" is, in fact, a great show. I have no trouble with an academic or intellectual approach to TV; in point of fact, James South's "[name of show, e.g., Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The X-Files and The Simpsons] and Philosophy" series is a brilliant exercise in interpreting TV, because it takes the shows at face value, then applies various philosophical disciplines to the actual text of the show. Lavery's collection, here, endeavors, instead, to dig below the surface of this outstanding show, and mine for that which, very well, may not be there at all. In short, he fails to "find the color."
(I am reminded of the student who asked William Faulkner what the significance of the large pillars in front of the plantation house in one of his novels, to which, Faulkner replied, "Oh, by all means, the pillars have tremendous significance...they hold the roof up." Sometimes, the text is just the text, and that can be enough if you are imaginative enough to enjoy it and analyze it as is.)
And to the reviewer who touted Ms. Klein's essay on the opening credits, I thought her entire thesis was undermined by the fact she mistakened a prospector biting into a nugget to see if it was gold (gold is soft, and will dent when bitten) for a man pulling a rotted tooth out of his mouth. It is hard to give much credence to an essayist who bases her thesis upon such blatantly mistaken impressions of the material upon which she opines. Sloppy academics, indeed.
I gave the book two stars instead of one simply because there were a few bits of information about the show of which I was unaware.Reading Deadwood: A Western to Swear By (Reading Contemporary Television) Overview
