In the Break ReviewIN THE BREAK is a story of friendship, loyalty, romance, tragedy, and the forever search of that perfect wave. In commanding style, Jack Lopez takes readers through the highs and lows of the characters, their feelings and emotions, and in the end leaves us with an unforgettable tale.
After Juan's best friend, Jamie, has a hostile fight with his stepfather, everything seems grim. In a flash of emergence, Juan, Jamie, and Jamie's sister, Amber, flee town on their own for Mexico, to let Jamie lay low for a while until things at home calm down. And while they're at it, they might as well surf as much as possible. Their days of fun surfing and nights of romance lead them to believe everything will turn out okay. But things don't seem to slow down, the ocean isn't calm, and eventually the tide catches up to Juan -- and it's from there that he must decide how to handle things.
Jack Lopez's lyrical and flowing writing style takes the reader away from their surroundings and allows them to be washed away with the current. Lopez's killer command of description and handle of language allows him to communicate truly believable voices and create a narrator with a scope of view not often observed in contemporary literature today. With hands-on description of real big wave surf and the southern California surfing scene, readers will get lost in the words and find themselves plummeting through every drop of loss and heartache, and escaping into an unbelievably well-told story.
Cheers to J.L.

Rick Steves' Europe Through the Back Door 2007: The Travel Skills Handbook ReviewThis is my third trip to Europe. I have used Rick's books both times before. I always get the newest one and read it cover to cover, underlining the parts that are most important to my trip planning. I've packed less each trip and enjoyed it more, seeing places I would have missed if I hadn't read his books. Why not listen to the voice of so much experience?!Rick Steves' Europe Through the Back Door 2007: The Travel Skills Handbook Overview

Way Off the Road: Discovering the Peculiar Charms of Small Town America ReviewBill Geist's "Way Off the Road: Discovering the Peculiar Charms of Small Town America" contains essays of his travel in small town America. Most of these small towns are virtually unknown, and some essays are more memorable than others. The memorable ones include the essays of the headless chicken; the sole citizen of Monowi, Nebraska (population: 1); the cow photographer; and many others. The author provides both a wacky and interesting picture of small towns, mostly in the Midwest. Contrary to the belief that small towns are boring, these essays actually gives a rather fun and proud portrayal of people living in these towns.
This was a fun read for me to learn more about the different characters in small town America. The writing was conversational and witty. However, I can see how some readers may feel offended by his style of writing which at times can be seen as making small jokes of small town folks. In any case, do not be deter by that as the essays in this book are fun and unique.

Fodor's New York City 2008 (Fodor's Gold Guides) ReviewThis Fodor's guidebook does a thorough job of breaking down the different neighborhoods of NYC (with helpful maps), and there are some unexpected extras, such as a full-color section on Central Park (with maps), a section on the galleries of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (with a gallery floorplan), and a detailed section on "Ground Zero." However, this book also seems to leave out "insider tips" that I found in Frommer's NYC guidebooks (such as Frommer's "New York City Day by Day" or the "Portable NYC" guide). For instance, while the Fodor's book does explain how to catch the free Staten Island Ferry, Frommer's "Portable" guide recommends that you sit on the right side for the best views of the Statue of Liberty. Despite all its break-out maps, Fodor's guide doesn't include a theatre district map. In addition, information on transportation options for getting to and from the area airports is shoved to the back of the guidebook like an afterthought. Finally, the organization wasn't the most effective for me; attractions are organized by neighborhood, so if you don't know, for instance, that the Empire State Building is located in the Union Square district, you have to use the index. It would be nice to have an overview of famous sites at the beginning of the guide to get oriented rather than have to start out "digging" for all the places you may want to see.
Unfortunately, this 500+ page guidebook is just too bulky to carry around NYC. However, it does provide a solid overview for those people still in the planning stages of their trip. I plan to take this book with me to NYC, but to pull out the lengthy sections on "Where to Stay" (I already have hotel reservations) and "Where to Dine" (I've already made dining arrangements). I do think Fodor's complements the Frommer's guides because it (Fodor's) provides great maps and interesting historical information about some sites; however, I still prefer the portable Frommer's guides, which provide compact, but meaty information.Fodor's New York City 2008 (Fodor's Gold Guides) Overview

Roadfood: The Coast-to-Coast Guide to 500 of the Best Barbeque Joints, Lobster Shacks, Ice Cream Parlors, Highway Diners, and Much More ReviewFew things can make the tedium of a long drive more bearable than the prospect of a decent place to eat along the way, and the restaurants listed in this guide are destinations in their own right.
Helpfully arranged by sections of the country, road food aficionados will find more than enough to keep them busy. Personally, I wanted to take off and tour Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana, as well as old haunts in Virginia. Being in the opposite corner of the country, though, I found a number of interesting looking places here to check out (as well as one or two I've already been to, and so I can attest to the reliability of the Stern's reviews).
I should note, though, that family members in Cody, Wyoming tell me that Franca's, which the Sterns list in this book, has in fact been closed for several years. So *caveat lector.* Things can change quickly in the restaurant world. Nevertheless, this is both a great reference and a fun title just for entertaining (if stomach growl-inducing) reading. If you're out on the road, be sure to keep a copy of this guide in your glove compartment.Roadfood: The Coast-to-Coast Guide to 500 of the Best Barbeque Joints, Lobster Shacks, Ice Cream Parlors, Highway Diners, and Much More Overview

Crossing an Ocean Under Power ReviewAt the time I wrote this book, my wife Roberta, and I, had spent thousands of hours on boats. We owned a boat capable of crossing oceans, but never actually intended to do so. We really just wanted a boat that could withstand the rough weather conditions we might see in the Pacific Northwest.
Our lives were changed forever when we were invited to participate in Nordhavn's Atlantic Rally. I almost threw the email away, but then routed it to Roberta, just to see what she would say. To my great surprise we found ourselves embarking on a great adventure.
Over the 3,500 mile journey, I learned a great deal about boating. This book was written to share with others what I learned. It is intended as a primer for anyone wondering what it would be like to take their boat offshore. It's a fun introduction to long-range cruising for those who, like me, had thought about taking their boat offshore, but had never seriously considered doing so.
I'm posting this message, because I notice that one of the persons who reviewed the book here on Amazon didn't get what the book is about. They called me a "wimp"!, which I found an amusing and puzzling comment. In actuality, that's the point of the book. This is a book for persons just getting started on long-distance cruising, who are still a bit nervous when they think about venturing a thousand miles out to sea. Perhaps the person who wrote that comment has crossed many oceans, in which case, I can understand why this might not be the right book for them.
My goal for this book was to share Roberta's and my experience at sea with others, and to answer for them all the hundreds of questions I used to have about long-distance cruising, but was afraid, or didn't know who, to ask. My hope is that those who read the book will find as we did, that not only is long-distance cruising possible, it's incredibly fun!
