Church Folk ReviewI had no idea what to expect when my online book club chose this book for their next read. I picked it up and couldn't put it down. It totally engrossed me from the first paragraph.
The setting is the 60's in the midst of the civil rights movement in which the black church was the center of much of this causes activities.
Theophilus Simmons, new pastor of Greater Hope United Church is single, new in the ministry, and falling deeply for Essie Lane. Their courtship is sweet and honest. Their marriage is put to the test by 'church folk'.
'Church Folk' shows all the elements of church life, the good, the bad, and the ugly. This book shows that there are wolves among the sheep, but the sheep ultimately overcome.
While reading this book I laughed out loud, said 'Amen' several times, and reminisced of the times when I was young attending church in the 60's. It isn't so 'churchy' that it isn't real. It isn't so hardcore that you can't enjoy it as a christian.Church Folk Overview

Lord Jim (Bantam Classics) ReviewThis is one of those books that anybody who has been throughhigh school should have been exposed (or at least exposed to the CliffNotes on the novel). I remember being assigned this book as a junior or senior and bluffing my way through without really reading it. I even got a literature degree without reading it. Finally, after many years, I felt that I should give the novel its due, and picked up a copy.
The novel is the story of Jim, an overly romantic seaman, who during a moment of crisis loses his courage. He is first mate on a pilgrim ship bound for Mecca and after the ship collides with an unseen object and is in danger of sinking, he abandons ship leaving the human cargo to fend for its own. He is dogged by his guilt and spends years drifting around the East trying to find the right occasion by which he might redeem himself. Eventually he ends up in the forests of Malaysia where he becomes a god-like protector of the indigenous people and is given the title of "Lord." But no matter how successful Jim might appear to his followers, and to the omnipresent narrator of the novel, he still cannot forget his moment of weakness. Jim's self-centeredness prevents him from moving forward with his life and condemns him to a life of voluntary exile, all the time proclaiming that he is not good enough to live in the outside world. He is willing to risk all future happiness and fortune to be able to face his demons once again without losing his nerves. Ironically, it is his last "heroic" act that destroys all the good that Jim has painstakingly built up, essentially bringing chaos to his Eden like world.
Published at the very beginning of the twentieth century, Lord Jim, in many ways anticipated the experimental writing techniques that would be brought to fruition in the works of Joyce, Faulkner, and others. Conrad is not only interested in telling a tale, he is interested in different points of view, nonlinear narrative techniques, and solving the complexities inherent in a "tale within a tale" formula. Although some readers might find Conrad's prose a little tedious, perseverence and careful reading will reveal passages of unexpected beauty that will cause the reader to pause -- then slowly re-read.Lord Jim (Bantam Classics) Overview

Gold Diggers: A Novel ReviewAPOOO Rating: 3.5
Gold Diggers opens your eyes to the REAL meaning of gold digging. You see it from every angle possible. It is a story of four beautiful and successful women, Paulette, Gillian, Reese, and Lauren, living in New York in search of happiness. They each have their own definition of what happiness means to them.
Paulette, being the outcast of her family, would try to do anything to gain the status that her cousin, Lauren, has. Lauren is Paulette's privileged cousin, that was blessed with the "good" genes. You know...light skin and pretty hair. Paulette stays in constant competition with Lauren and will stop at NOTHING to beat her. NOTHING. Lauren is married to a lawyer who conveniently was selected for her. Is this real love? Gillian's dream is to be a great actress. Her mother believes that she needs to give that up and try to find that jackpot with Mr. Right Now Has The Most Money. Being that she is the product of a full-time gold digger, she eventually ends up being the best at it. Reese is the NBA wife. She has worked hard to position herself for the best divorce settlement possible. When situations change and it seems like things are headed over the cliff, the real manipulation begins.
Howard does a great job in taking you into the thought processes of each character. You see gold digging at a whole new level. It was slow at first but then things quickly picked up! It was fun read.

Living Large ReviewLet me say off the bat, I am not a romance novel reader. For whatever reason, they aren't my type of reading; but, I don't knock those who do. My joy is seeing people read ... period.
I picked up LIVING LARGE because of its unique theme that the main female characters in each story were plus size. This book is complied of short stories written by some of the busiest black authors in the romance field. While I won't go and give a descriptive synopsis for each story, I will say that I found something positive in each one.
If I had to choose a story as a stand out it would be STRICTLY BUSINESS by Francis Ray. Her writing is crisp, clear, and concise. I related to the main character and found her to be approachable and realistic. Coupled with the fact that to me she was the one, out of all of the main characters in the stories, who most fit the description of a full figure person. Being an avid reader, so often you get a little tired of the main characters being "perfect" in all different ways. So it was refreshing to see the stories written from a different angle.
I can only hope that this is the beginning of a trend, where the main characters represent the many different makeup of people .... Pus size, small, corporate, blue collar, etc.Living Large Overview
