The Missing Popcorn and Other Stories ReviewThis book is the companion volume to Betty's Secret by the same author. Betty's Secret and The Missing Popcorn are two of the most unpleasant sets of "character-building" stories I ever had the displeasure to endure as a child. Unlike many Rod & Staff books, which I highly recommend, The Missing Popcorn always left a bad taste in my mouth and a depressed feeling in my soul.
Many of these stories are about children misbehaving in various ways and suffering miserable consequences. They are supposed to learn from their mistakes; however, I didn't walk away from this book feeling like the children had an actual change of heart, only sometimes a change of action based only on consequences. (i.e. They got smarter merely for self preservation, not love for God or their fellow-man.)
Also, unlike some of my Rod & Staff childhood favorites (The Family God Gave, Coon Tree Summer, Ice Slide Winter, God's World and Johnny, Sunshine Country, The Kitten in the Well, David and Susan at Wild Rose Cottage) the stories in The Missing Popcorn did not leave me with the impression that the children in this book had warm and caring relationships with the adults in their lives.
It is difficult to write good character-building stories using misbehaving children as the central characters. One of the few writers that I feel has been able to pull this off is "Uncle Arthur" in his "Bedtime Stories." There are also other Rod & Staff books that have excellent character-building themes built into more wholesome storylines.The Missing Popcorn and Other Stories Overview
