The Kenny Garrett Collection: Alto Saxophone Artist Transcriptions ReviewThis is one of the best transcription books out there, period. Many transcription books have a couple of good solos in there but a bunch of not-so-good ones. Not this one. Every solo in here is fabulous. They picked all his best solos from albums like African Exchange Student, Black Hope, Triology, Songbook, etc.
If you are student, you can expect to learn a lot from this book, such as:
-standard, bebop-influenced vocabulary (like playing over changes)
-pentatonic and modal playing
-side slipping
A couple of my all time favorite Kenny Garrett solos are in this book:
- Ja-Hed from African Exchange Student
- Mack the Knife from African Exchange Student
And finally, the book is beautiful---high-quality music printing, easy to read, etc.
