Southern Heart ReviewI rated this book 3 stars. The first half was worth 2 stars. The third quarter was worth 3 stars. The last few chapters were worth 4 stars. I averaged it out to three.It was extremely difficult to get into this book, mostly because the story was disjointed and trite. The book (i.e., fluidness of the writing and story) got better with each chapter and by the time it got really good it was done. It was almost as if the author matured during the writing of the tale (almost like elementary school through her Freshman year in college). To make matters worse, the book didn't just play with lesbian stereotypes, it played with dumb blonde, frumpy wildcat, and Southern stereotypes too.
The main character, Kari, was in her 40s and was only just discovering her lesbianism (ok, I know this happens so I'm not saying this is a bad thing). She has never acted on her inclinations, but has wild monkey sex with the sexy, dumb blonde daughter of the gardner within hours of meeting her. She feels nothing but contempt for the frumpy Lani, but finally sees through the other woman's padded exterior. Of course, Lani has a biker girlfriend who is the ultimate butch. To top things off, Kari's prudish and pushy mother reveals a secret. It seems mother and daughter have more in common than they thought. Throw in Kari's older sister, her mothers cancer, and Lani's auto accident and you have a convoluted mess.
This is not a book I'll keep on my shelf. Not highly recommended, but better than cleaning your house on a Saturday afternoon.Southern Heart Overview
